I was wondering what size you guys would recommend, and maybe what fish types? They'd have to be fairly common; I'm hoping to buy them at my petstore uwu
I'm hoping to get a 20-30 gal aquarium but due to price limits I might end up only being able to use a 10 gallon. Any fish that could do well in that amount of space?
ALSO any tips for setting up & cycling a large aquarium?

a 30 gallon tank with a pair of dwarf gouramis, a few tetras, maybe some danios, and a school of cories would look GORGEOUS.

in a ten gallon I would do a small school of danios and a ram cichlid. Rams are the only small peaceful cichlid(even angelfish are nasty creatures), but would need a small school of danios or tetras to bring them out of hiding.

the basic rule of thumb is one inch per gallon(does not mean go buy a 10 inch long fish for the ten gallon) so do some looking and be creative.

shrimp and dwarf frogs would look good in a small tank with the danios as well(not the ram though, ram cichlids like shrimp as a snack, and would eat the frogs food too).

20 gals are great tanks ! As for community fish u recommend Mollies, Guppies, plates, and tetras. After you've had your tank for awhile I recommend getting algae eaters (NOT Plecos! They get WAY to big ) don't get them in the beginning unless you plan t i feed them mages wafers.

So today I adopted a Koi fish. I had to go to the store for more fish food, as we are going on a trip next month. I saw this little one, and just couldn't leave him. Poor baby looked like he wasn't getting any food. Right now I have him in one of my tanks until he is healed up enough to go into the pond. He is about 4 inches long, but only about as wide as a male guppy. I am calling him Skely.

Poor baby...

Skely

oh my goodness, who would even LET a fish get into that state AND STILL have him in the display tank! I would love a koi but I lack a pond, and my parents wont let me dig a hole in our backyard to set up a pond.

Only thing worse than this little guy that I've seen is a landscape store that sells pond fish that has a goldfish pond in the front with 12 ADULT koi in it, they basically hover in one spot and cant move.

I know. The employ claims that they just got him in a few days ago, and hasn't seen him before. I just hope she isn't the only one who cares for the fish. I currently have 6 Koi and 3 Goldfish in my pond outside. They are so active, I couldn't imagine fish bigger then them in a smaller pond. (They are all anywhere from 8 inches to a foot in length.) That's just horrible!

If possible go for at least 20 gallons. There aren't many options for a 10 gallon community tank but there are quite a few species that can be kept in 20+ gallons c: Look for second hand ones on places like Craigslist and you can normally get one pretty cheap.
Any particular fish or type of fish you want? c:
Cycling is exactly the same no matter what size, you'd just need more ammonia. If you already have another tank set up with a filter you can just move that (or the filter media) into the bigger one and it's instantly cycled c:

Inch of fish is not a rule or a guideline and isn't all that useful. At best it's a vague starting place. There's way more that goes into stocking a tank than just the physical size of the fish.

@Charchar2, I'm currently in the process of cycling a second tank with ammonia. If you want a sort of guide or tips and advice, pm me and I'll be happy to tell you everything I know when I get a chance.

Honestly, with community tanks the bigger the better imo. I've got 33.8 gal and it's starting to feel little small. XD My set up is currently: 33 blue(green) neon tetras(though one looks to be a normal neon...), 7 bandit corries and 2 ottos. I'm planning on adding 3 more corries, and maybe pair of dwarf cichlids(still not totally sure about them), at some point. I think I might be able to fit 15 corries in total, but then I wouldn't get the cichlids...
Personally I'd build a community like this: 1 school(20-40 fish, depending how big they are), 1-3 bigger fish(how many depends on the species) and bottom fish, if wanted.

-Most tetras and some rasboras (but not all so you have to do little research) are pretty safe bet for 20-30 gal. I wouldn't put two schools in that sized tank, since it can get little messy looking and usually schooling fish look and act better in large as possible groups. So if you'd have two smaller groups, then it might not be as pretty as possible and there might be some misbehavior(=fin nipping other fish, harrasing other fish etc.).
-Out of bigger fish: some dwarf cichlids are okay for 30gal, but 20gal might be too little. Then dwarf and honey gouramis work for both sizes, plus couple other small gourami species. You could even keep a betta in community tank, but you have to be carefull not to take any schooling fish that might be fin nippers.
-For bottom, smaller corry species are good choice imo. Remember they are schooling fish, so at least 6-10 of them imo. For 30 gal bristlenose pleco is just about okay fit, and there are couple smaller plecos that might be okay in such sized tank(like the ones that grow generally around max 10cm). But plecos(other than bristlenose, which are given pretty much free were I live) can be bit pricy, so if money is little tight I would just forget plecos.

Look around some fish that would fit in you tank, then pick one that you absolutely want to have and then select other fishes that suite to that one must have fishs' requirements. :)
Can we pretend that the airplanes in the night sky are like shooting stars?
I could really use a wish right now, wish right now, wish right now...

I'm currently pet sitting. (Dogs fish lizards and stuff) they also have two goldfish in a small tank. Which is bad enough, but they haven't cleaned the tank in.. I would say months. (Am not going to go into detail about the dirtiness of the tank) One of the fish is just sitting there and he's alive but there is some kind of fungus on him and I'm just ugh.. I want to clean the tank but I don't have anything to clean it with and I just feel so bad for these fish.

Okay so first of all, I feel sooo bad for that koi. Good luck with him! I go to the worst local pet store there is around, Petco, and I look for fry that might be swimming around there. They give them to me for free because they are not part of inventory and I get to save and raise them.

So I have a 20 gallon tank, and when cleaning time comes around I always struggle on where to put my fish. The problem is they are so small that I'm afraid to hurt them with the cleaning tube, they might get sucked up and I don't want to stress them out too much. What do you guys do with your fish when you clean the tank?
