To be honest, I like to see a bit of bravery, but some brain cells are wonderful.
What do you think makes a female character "strong"?
I think a girl who is stubborn and headstrong, but knows when to back down.
What do you think makes a poor female character? What traits do you dislike in female characters?
A girl who acts like the stereotype girl, can be summed up with this one word: stupid.
What types of female characters do you like? What types do you dislike?
From my point of view, a... half-tomboy is the best.
Any other advice for writing interesting, strong female characters?
Be yourself.

Thanks for your thoughts! ^^ Can I ask what you mean by a "half-tomboy"? I'm not quite sure what to make of that.

Any one else care to anwser? I'd love to hear from a lot of different people. It'd help me out tremendously.

What do you think makes a good female character? What traits do like to see in them?
I don't completely know how to answer, honestly. If the writer is good enough and they're portrayed properly, almost any character can be considered good, so long as they have a very human balance of positive and negative traits. I enjoy seeing persistence or an interesting sense of humor, though. C:
What do you think makes a female character "strong"?
Oh geez, that's hard. Strength comes in many forms, after all, and nobody can be strong all the time. We're only human, right? It's kind of the ability to hold yourself together when things get rough, to keep moving forward, to be willing to sacrifice.
What do you think makes a poor female character? What traits do you dislike in female characters?
Well, if they're not realistic, for one. Mary sues aren't welcome. I dislike it if they're always the one who is being saved, or if they can never learn or grow from past mistakes. And I tend to hate characters that are too needlessly stubborn or aggressive {because usually, they're too stubborn to admit they're wrong and learn from their own errors when it counts}, too whiny, or too oblivious/naive.
What types of female characters do you like? What types do you dislike?
I don't know if I can answer the first part. There's lots of potential types that are good if done correctly. XD
I tend to dislike ones that are too helpless. When they're always being the damsel in distress. Or characters that are too judgmental or standoff-ish or angry without reason.

Any other advice for writing interesting, strong female characters?
Growth throughout the story can be fun. Your character can turn into a "strong" person after having to face and learn from different challenges. And people can be strong and weak in different situations. For example, I currently have a character whom could face many difficult situations, but would run for the hills at the first sign of a family conflict.

What do you think makes a good female character? What traits do like to see in them?

I like reading about girls who have a very powerful air about them. I like female characters who carry a particular aura of authority, but without any sort of rotten attitude. A person who's not exactly outgoing, and yet still interesting all the same.

What do you think makes a female character "strong"?

Women who I observe as strong are the type of women who are down to earth and take advantage of the opportunities that open up to them. They have a talent of making the best out of bad situations and always keep a quick wit about them. Also, although they are prideful, they will gladly solicit help when needed

What do you think makes a poor female character? What traits do you dislike in female characters?

I don't really know about 'poor' female characters. However, I dislike reading about girls who are, in a way, "Out of touch" with their reality. Characters like these are often explained as a sort of air head, or maybe even seem as dimwitted. Although I've also read about characters like these who display a potential to be great, but because of their habit to maybe easily become distracted, their full greatness is never shown to others around her.(I think this is why sometimes I really dislike myself because I always feel distracted to the point where it seems everyone is one step ahead. I reflect this on my female characters, and therefore, only ever really write about girls who are out of touch, or not completely down to earth)

What types of female characters do you like? What types do you dislike?

I don't like ditsy, seemingly desperate girls of the sort. The female characters I like the most are mostly recognized as independent or self reliant.

Any other advice for writing interesting, strong female characters?

in my opinion, the best female characters are leaders. They don't necessarily have to be a loud, boisterous leader, but can also be clever and influential to their group.

Ah, thank you all! ^^ I'm loving all these answers. I find myself nodding in agreement with a lot of them. I'm definitely going to be keeping all of these in mind.

What do you think makes a good female character? What traits do like to see in them?
Realistic but exaggerated reliability. Being able to see myself in the character. And most off all, I like them to have a head on their shoulders. I don't want them to be overly smart or love school in a obsessive way, but I want them to have logic and the ability to get out of rough patches with little help from others. But I do want them to take help when offered, even if it does hurt their esteem a little.

What do you think makes a female character "strong"?
I think both the ability to get through hard times-even if you are sad in the process, especially if you are sad, and the knowance of how to be a leader when necessary. The character may be shy and such, but also capable of getting out of her shell, and feeling good or regret about it. That sort of thing.

What do you think makes a poor female character? What traits do you dislike in female characters?
Being a idiot. Pardon the language, but I don't like characters that don't even think about things. That put themselves in situations that they shouldn't because they are full of themselves. I think snotty and brainless characters play into a story-they're important as a minor, but they shouldn't be the main character, in my opinion.

What types of female characters do you like? What types do you dislike?
I kinda summed that up above. ^^^ xD

Any other advice for writing interesting, strong female characters?
I would just be yourself. Add yourself to them, and you probably can't go wrong. That realism and sympathy for situations/feelings they are going through gets a lot of people.

I posted about a book I'm working on some time ago (My Year with Mr. Tesla) to see if anyone would be interested in it. It seems a lot of you were, and so I've decided to post my progression on it. The topic is here. Any critiques are welcome.
