We are getting Max, my betta, a 5-10 gallon tank, is that enough room to have a few females? It's a relatively small tank, do you think a small group of females could feel comfortable in the tank with him?

He's pretty old, and he stopped making "Bubble Nets" a while ago on the surface of his water. Is there still a chance of him breeding with females if we were to put a few in there with Max?

Breeding isn't really the problem.
It's the killing that's problem.
Don't keep males and females together, especially in only five or ten gallons.

Since its a lot of water try might get tired of swimming in such a big tank, though. If you put a betta in there you'd just have to put a lot of taller plants or decorations in with him to give him a lot of places to rest, just in case. Also, large open spaces can be a bit stressful for them so the more plants and decorations you have in the tank, the safer they'll feel.
It is a lot of space for one fish, but you'd definitely have one of the most spoiled bettas around, haha.
Just please don't mix males and females, or put males together. You could do a sorority of females, too, but they might be a bit more difficult to keep track of since they're small and like to zip around.
Oh, and you could keep some cories with them. They're pretty fun.

Goldfish would be fun, too. Once they grow larger they'd be very easy to keep track of, too.

oh i have corries right now. as much as i LOVE catfish, these are getting old as are most of the fish in this tank because they used to be may fathers. that's why when they all pass away i'm planning what i want to do. I will be going to college in about 2 years, and if i get goldfish i will have a backup pond for them to live in if i need to dorm.

oh i got sidetracked sorry. as much as i LOVE catfish, corries are a bit small for the tank. right now i have one plant in there because its the only one my fish haven't torn to shreds.

My sister had two males that i put down in my one tank, until she got a new tank. turns out she had a female dragonscale and a male regular. They are in separate tanks as of now, but i had fluked and forgotten which i put where one time. thank god none got hurt.

What i really wanted to do is get a single blood parrot cichlid or a single jack Dempsey, but i know nothing about them other than that they need huge tanks. Maybe a single Oscar instead, as i do have an appreciation for them, and hate seeing people putting them in 10 gallons.

i actually have an ex. friend who breeds them to fight. i called the animal shelter in town but they have "no evidence" even though i showed them a recording of these fights. if it wasn't on my old laptop i'd post it on here.

I don't know. something easy to keep track of, and easy to take care of. Saltwater is NOT an option. costs too much.

I agree with Dia, ten gallons is too small to keep multiple bettas period. a 30 gallon or more that is heavily planted with good water flow at the surface is the bare minimum for a small group of females with a male(plant are for the females to hide in, because some males are aggressive). and you also need to get them all at the same time, pick a very docile male and a few females. let the females go first, then let the male out last, this makes sure that the male does not chase the females as they come out.

betta groups are not for beginners, it takes a lot of effort and constant watching in case something does go wrong(in my harem, I had two females that decided to try and kill a smaller female, luckily the male was very protective of that female).

-Slash- wrote:Would it be okay to house a Male betta in a 55 gallon bowfront alone? or with a school of neons?

how many neons could i have with that boy?

The only thing I would be worried about is the betta getting knocked about by the current, he may endup just sitting in one corner most of the time so he doesn't have to fight the current of the filter/bubblers to swim
If you do go for a betta avoid the veiltails and dumbos ect. With long finage

Have you looked at dwarf gouramis? They are actually related to bettas and you couple probably have a couple in there aslong as it's well planted, the males can be abit territorial so aslong as there are plants and stuff for them to establish their territory's they will be fine
I would also add schooling fish like neon tetra, danios or skirt tetra

It might be abit hard to count neons and danio though

You could go with an oscar for a while but you would eventually have to upgrade it to atleast a 75G
Maybe you could rehome it before you went to collage?

You could also go with a blood parrot they don't get as large as oscars, I think their recommended tank size is 40G
I actually owned one at one stage, I love their mouths always looks like they are smiling :D

I personally would go with goldfish though lol
I have 3 in a 40g which is fully stocked and by some standards overstocked
If you go with goldies you will need a filter that does x10 filtration per hr
So in your case you will probably be after a canister filter that does 550g per hr

Here's my tank
Image
I haven't quite decided what I wanna do with it yet
Either load it with plants or keep it basically bare

That's what I was thinking
I'll get another larger piece and load it up with java fern and anubias

I was thinking about getting some large glass pebbles too, Bagheera (the black oranda) likes playing with one I found and put in there, he's been moving it around the tank all day

I also need a background to hide all the cords
I might find a piece of material and use that, probably blue or something with a nice pattern

So I have a tank of ottos and guppies. I feed the ottos male but I noticed that the guppies eat it too. Is that ok?

And my betta who is living with goldfish acts like them know! He digs through the gravel all the time, swims to the front if the tank when I walk in the room and is really funny!

What's male?

Betta have completely different requirements to goldfish, mainly that goldfish are cold water and betta are tropical but also the filtration goldfish require (10x filtration) would knock around a betta too much
Also the goldfish might accidentally eat him when they get large enough

Yeah I meant kale. :p

But right now the betta is larger than the goldfish and I've kept the goldfish for about 4 months now.
