Roll says... 4: Bring something back.
You're still tired, but quickly assert that you want to go hunting before you go home. It would be a waste of your first day to not provide for the Clan and bring home prey.
Applefoot immediately points out that you don't know the first thing about hunting, but falters and sighs resignedly when you insist on at least giving it a shot. She leads you to a place popular for first time fishers - a small beach that's closed off from the rest of the shoreline by a cluster of rocks, which also blocks the current, creating a nice pool where minnows occasionally show up in schools to poke at what little plant life there is before swimming off again.
And, right on cue, there's a little group of them taking a break from the river, completely unaware of you and your mentor.
"These are a little small to try and catch," you say slowly.
"You weren't expecting to catch a trout today, I hope," Applefoot replies dryly. "This is a good place to start. They're little enough to not be difficult, but they give you an idea of what catching a fish is going to be like."
"What couldn't I learn from catching a trout?"
"For starters, the bigger a fish is, the more powerful they are. Fish struggle hard when they get grabbed, harder than mice or squirrels. If you pin down a mouse, you won't have too much of a problem killing it, but a fish will fight even when you have it on shore. I had to toss my fish as far away from the water as I could when I started fishing, and the thing was leaping around for almost a full minute."
Your immediate image is that of the fish you've seen on the prey-pile - unblinking, vacant eyes with mouths wide open. You're having a hard time picturing them leaping around, considering they don't have legs, but Applefoot does make a point.
"Will we try a bigger fish if I catch a minnow?" you ask.
"Tell you what." Applefoot gives you something vaguely similar to a smile. "You catch three minnows, and I'll personally get the biggest fish I can and let you bring it on shore to kill. You get to claim it as yours, everyone will ooh and ahh, you'll be hailed as a prodigy, so on and so forth."
Sounds promising. No one would have to know that she, technically, caught it, and no doubt the other apprentices will be very impressed. On the other paw, it would be a detriment to your integrity, plus you won't have actually caught it yourself and gotten the experience.
Accept the challenge.
Catch your own fish.
