The only problem I have is the paws, they don't look as I would prefer. They look a little long; I like the simplicity in the dog line's paws.
People say the new fennec is cartoony, but I don't see it. If anything, it is more realistic than any of the main breeds in my eyes.
I agree, the paws throw me off somewhat. They seem almost "finger-ish" to me and like the back feet are tipped back on the heels.
I think that the "cartoony" aspect comes from how the face is drawn. The body does look more realistic than most pets, I agree (I really like the hind legs and tail-- I also like the body's thickness and the shape of the ears) but the eyes are close together, the pupils and irises do not fill up much of the eye whites, and the face does not fill up the head as much as you would expect of a realistically drawn animal. On a real fennec fox, most of the face will consist of shout-- but on these lines, the snout is an additive feature on a wider head. The head is also made to look larger than the face by the thickness of the neck (which seems a little thick behind the ears.)
There's also the hair, which will always create a more cartoony look on an animal than leaving the crown of the head more simplified will.
Not that there's anything wrong with a cartoony look (I never draw realistically personally; cartoony designs are too fun!), just that if it is not carried fluidly through the rest of the design it can sometimes create an off-balanced look. Though whether or not the design seems off-balance is up to the person viewing it. One person might adore the lines-- someone else may not. Someone like me may like some aspects of it, but dislike others. Personal preferences come into huge play!
