Name: Through My Eyes 'Alison'
Gender: Mare
Answer: Okay, this may or may not be long.
Ever since reading 'Ultraviolet' by R J Anderson, which is now my favourite book (You should check it out - it's seriously good), I've become interested with synthesia, its effects and how synthetes could see the world differently (Hence the name).
Looking at this mare immediately made me think of the book and I instantly decided that Alison's markings would be a synthete's interpretation of water, or, more specifically, tears.
Now, it is unlikely that you will fully understand my meaning at this point, as synthesia is little-known and very rare. For this reason, I've written a short passage from my point of view. Or, at least, what would be my point of view if I were a synthete.
'Tears. White hot spines spiraling through the blotched darkness of dispair. Bursting like fireworks, the metallic CLANG of rage. Suddenly broken, sour-tasting sobs spear my mind, like the otherworldly flashes of vehicles searing down a highway at night. Vertical lances of emptiness aimed at my heart, ready for the kill. And, behind it all, soft, gentle ripples of hope, peering shyly from behind the torment. Perhaps the least apparent, but most definately there, beckoning almost inaudibly.'
Synthesia is a natural phenomenon which takes place when a person's senses are interconnected. For instance, tasting shapes and seeing days of the week as different colours are some different forms. It has nothing to do with mental health and can cause a person to find it difficult to tell between imagination and reality.
Ultraviolet and all of its characters are by R J Anderson.
Alison is the main character in the novel.
