People trade other people for the map pieces they have that way they can have enough map pieces to trade in.

Also, there is one place -- the Rubble Pile where you can get a pet right away - I got a pet on my first try and haven't been able to try again yet so you might also get items.

Yeah all I got was an item from the pile. I have yet to get a pet from anywhere
