tidal redemption's herd ♥Mew flicked an ear back, acknowledging the chatter going on behind her. Listening to them for a moment, she was again reminded of how lucky she was to have such a kind and wise stallion. Mew’s father had a large herd and though he divided his time between his children and mares equally she spent more of her younger years exploring the islands with her grandfather. Mew had learnt a lot from the dark stallion and was glad that it was her daughter’s turn to learn the ways of their world.
Mew noticed that Cloud had begun to gain on her. She could tell that Cloud was used to setting her own pace. Mew flicked her ears back. Now was not the time for a race – that could happen when they had found somewhere safe to graze. When Cloud was alongside her Mew swiftly reached over and nipped the grey mare, telling her to settle down. “You can run to your heart’s content when we get there, but first we have to get there safely,” she nickered.

Eevee was glad to be moving, too. She could let out all of the energy that had pent up while she was playing the perfect daughter. Though it was frustrating containing herself she had not forgotten the gentle nip that her father had once given her to settle down. When he had looked at her again today, this time with a look of affection, she knew it was worth it.
Eevee nickered softly, both surprised and excited – she was such a daddy’s girl – to find her father striding alongside her. She wondered if it was the result of her good behaviour before. She soon realised that it was her turn to receive a lesson in the ways of the world. The yearling pricked her ears and listened quietly, sensing that it was important. She hadn’t received the ‘this is what a young man might want from you one day’ talk from her mother so it was surprising to hear her father talk about the role of subordinates. If she had eyebrows they would have shot up. Still, this was the world that she lived in. When Tidal paused she nodded.
Next the yearling was educated on the role of lead mare. Eevee looked at Mew, striding ahead with her head held high and her tail streaming out behind her. Naturally, Eevee would begin to mimic this behaviour to a degree but the role had yet to interest her. For now she was simply proud of her mother and admired her for looking after the herd in Geyser’s absence.
Eevee felt that some kind of response was required from her and nodded again, showing that she was paying attention. She was devouring all of the information her father was giving her. Dog was a rank that interested her – not personally, of course. She was thinking of her brother, Sebastian. She looked over at the chestnut colt, smiling. If Sebastian stayed as a dog she wouldn’t have to say goodbye to him so soon. Of course, that would mean sacrificing his own chance to gain a herd. She couldn’t imagine him taking mares from his father. Her excitement over the idea dissipated. Eevee looked back to her father, meeting his eyes, conflicted.
Eevee was glad that they were different. She looked at her mother again, grateful that the black mare wouldn't need to be a tyrant in this herd to keep her position – not that she didn't have the potential to be when needed. Eevee preferred the bubbly, bright Mew that cared for everyone rather than the typical aggressive, fierce lead mare that Tidal described. Eevee enjoyed their family – that’s what it was, one little family. She would have to roll with whatever cards fate dealt her when it came the time for her to leave. When her father asked her what she thought she mentally froze. She had taken in so much information that she needed a moment to process it all, an adorable quizzical look crossing her face. When the mental fog finally cleared she smiled, “Thanks for preparing me, dad,” she was truly grateful, “It doesn’t seem so scary now”.

Mew recognised the entrance to the valley in the distance. Her eyes lit up. “Finally,” she snorted, smiling at Cloud. The black mare arched her short neck, holding it slightly in Cloud's direction. It was a visual cue to the grey mare that Mew was going to slow down a little. Mew remembered that Tidal had wanted to inspect the entrance himself to make sure that it was safe. She flicked her ears back, listening to the conversation. It made her smile hearing the happiness and sincerity in her daughter's voice. When there was a lull in the conversation Mew slowed to a trot and whinnied to Tidal.
