I've seen the Holly- prefix go for ginger, black, and white cats. Could I have an explanation? Are there different sorts of holly out there?

Snowlep333 wrote:Right, some ideas, from Ginger's generator.

Name: Starlingpelt.
Description: Tall, thin, black tom with small white paws and green eyes.
Important Notes:

Name: Loonleaf.
Description: Wiry, lean, black and white tom with green eyes.
Important Notes: Good with herbs, sorta grumpy and feels left out sometimes, but don't mind that emotional stuff.

Name: Cherryclaw.
Description: Vivid red molly with pale yellow eyes. Considered pretty.
Important Notes: She's a good fighter.

Name: Barleycloud.
Description: Light brown tom with amber eyes.
Important Notes: Mellow, easygoing and will give advice to troubled apprentices.

Name: Poppyflower.
Description: Pretty red molly with bright green eyes.
Important Notes: Almost always followed by kits. She never minds one bit.

Name: Briarfoot.
Description: Tough, stocky, scarred dark brown tabby tom with amber eyes.
Important Notes: Quiet, deep-voiced, a good mentor and a fast runner.

Name: Nightingaleface.
Description: Light brown, handsome and proud-looking tom with pale yellow eyes.
Important Notes: He lost a toe, but I can't think of a name suitable for...er...this kind of loss.

Sorry for the wait on this!

Starlingpelt
Rate: 10/10
Reasoning: This name works just fine, as long as he doesn't have any special skills, which he doesn't appear to.
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: None.

Loonleaf
Rate: 9/10
Reasoning: I do want to note that a medicine cat should be good with herbs. That's a requirement. -leaf is for cats who are above their peers in herbal treatment. If you nudge it up to "Very good" then I think it's fine - unless you mean to say that he IS above average, in which case ignore me.
Alternative Name: Loonfur/Loonpelt, if he's just normal at herbs (read: good). If he's above par, then keep -leaf.
Notes: None.

Cherryclaw
Rate: 10/10
Reasoning: Kudos for going the right route, suffix wise. -face would fit her well, but skill and personality go over appearance, and I will credit you for that! This name fits her perfectly.
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: None.

Barleycloud
Rate: 10/10
Reasoning: Barley- is more for golden-brown, but, really, is there much difference between the two? I don't think so.
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: None.

Poppyflower
Rate: 9/10
Reasoning: My only question is if she's skilled at helping to raise and care for kits. She does seem to be adored by them, so I would assume that's the case. I'm just not too clear on it.
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: None.

Briarfoot
Rate: 10/10
Reasoning: There's something very charming about the concept of a gruff, scary looking cat being a good mentor to apprentices. It might just be in with that whole "appearances can be deceiving" thing, who knows. Anyway, his name fits him fine, though I wonder why he's stocky but fast. Generally, longer legged cats are faster, but I'm not gunna nitpick.
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: None.

Nightingaleface
Rate: 10/10
Reasoning: Rad, a male cat with the name -face. It's almost always applied to females for some reason.
So long as his loss of a toe doesn't impede his day-to-day life, he shouldn't need a rename. It is a little difficult to think of a name for, anyway. Threetoes? Nopinky?
Alternative Name: None.
Notes: I've been sitting here for five minutes trying to figure out exactly what made him lose just one toe. I'd like to think that he keeps it a mystery and just changes the story every single time someone asks.

Man, Snowbird's real popular as a name, innit?

Rate: 7/10
Type: Canonical
Reasoning: -bird is coupled with -wing, -feather, and -flight, in that it doesn't work for cats. Cats aren't birds, firstly, and even if she's skilled in birds more than other prey, she's a good hunter anyway, so she should receive a name that describes hunting in general, not just the one prey.
Her prefix fits her perfectly, though, so I have no issue with that.
Alternative Name: Snow-whisker/Snowstream. -whisker is for a good hunter, and -stream is for if she's particularly notable for her fishing abilities, but since she does equally well with birds, I suggest -whisker.
Notes: None.

Holly- actually only goes for white and ginger cats. The black association is through Hollyleaf, who doesn't follow traditionalism and thus is an outlier. As for the red and white, allow me to quote Ailuronymy:
Information: the common holly (also called the English holly or European holly) is an evergreen scrub that grows throughout England, especially in woodlands and gardens. It can reach about twenty-five metres in height. It has spiny dark green, fairly shiny leaves, and produces white flowers in May. The iconic red berries are produced in November; they are toxic and should not be eaten.

With each prefix, there's an explanation on the list if you click on the name. If you're curious about other names, go ahead and check it out.

Here are two Roleplay forms C: Review?

Image

P O U N C E P A W
Reach for the stars

Name// Pouncepaw
Warrior Name// Pounceleaf
Gender// Tom
Pelt// Light Brown, darker tabby stripes
Eyes// Emerald Green
Mother|Unknown
Father|Unknown
Sisters|None
Brothers|Hailpaw
Crush|Oceanpaw
Mate|None
Kits|Too Young

Personality

Pouncepaw is an energetic young tom with big dreams and the power and ambition to achieve them. He can be annoying and quite bossy, but really he is just a cat who wants some attention. Pouncepaw values his brother more than himself, and would die for any cat in the Clan. He is fiercely loyal and his path will never stray from that set out for him by StarClan. Pouncepaw's history haunts him slightly, and he hates it. His ambition is mainly caused by that need of knowing that you're wanted. You're worth it.

Pouncepaw has never been loved by anyone expect his brother, and sometimes his brother had better things to be doing. Pouncepaw took this as a challenge and continually strives to be better than Hailpaw. His ultimate dream is to become a leader, but deputy will do. He wants his name to be known. He doesn't care if it's for good or for bad.

History

Pouncepaw and Hailpaw were abandoned at birth. Both brothers were helpless, only having been born a few hours ago. Their mother had abandoned them, having never wanted kits, and, as for their dad, well... He just... Disappeared I guess. The two managed to survive for a few days, being taken care of by a rogue she cat. They lived together happily for about a moon. It wasn't to last. The she cat soon became pregnant with her own litter, and Pouncepaw and Hailpaw were soon forgotten.

The last straw unravelled when the kits were born. Determined to protect them, the she cat chased Pouncepaw and Hailpaw out of the barn they had been living in. In a few seconds, the brothers had lost everything they had known. Their only mother and home. They only had each other.

Pouncepaw let his brother lead the way as they wandered around aimlessly, without a proper destination in mind. They had strayed into clan territory. The brothers were found, and after a debate in which Hailpaw got annoyed, they were brought back to camp and joined the Clan.

Sorry for the wait, if there was one. I can never tell with this stupid site clock.

Pounceleaf
Name Rating: 2/10
Name Type: Canonical
Name Reasoning: Prefixes that are verbs, like Jump- or Pounce-, are one of the shakiest possible ways to name a cat. The biggest reason is that a kitten doesn't really do a whole lot of pouncing or jumping or...anything, really. They squeal, drink milk, and sleep. That's all they do. They don't have the balance to even get off of their belly until they're around 3 weeks old. Nor is there any color association with Pounce- - how am I supposed to tell you what a Pounce- cat would look like? If it's supposed to mean something metaphorical, then you've lost me completely.
-leaf would imply that he's a skilled medicine cat, and he clearly isn't. He's not even the medicine cat's apprentice. He has a personality that's extremely notable, though - he's idealistic, strong-willed, and dedicated to doing what he thinks is the right thing. That has a name all on its own.
Alternative Name: Adderheart/Pipitheart. Both prefixes describe a brown tabby with dark stripes, and -heart describes his fierce devotion to his own morals and a desire to make a change, or at least have an effect on the world.

Character Rating: 6/10
Character Reasoning: His personality, in and of itself, isn't the issue here. It's that history that really needs to be discussed.
The whole story is a little convoluted and straight up seems like it was built specifically for the characters to angst about later on.
I have a hard time believing that a couple of newborn kittens would live for more than 24 hours on their own. I mean, even counting out any predators that may be lurking, there's the weather, lack of nutrition, inability to clean themselves or help their systems keep running - did you know that mother cats need to groom the kittens' butts so they can properly excrete? I didn't, until I had to take care of a newborn kitten without a mother around.
Barrels of fun, I can assure you.
My point is that there are more liable ways to keep the kittens alive. Which leads into my second point.
I'm having trouble with the idea of a mother just straight up abandoning her kits, especially immediately after birth. Special chemicals and endorphins are released after birth for this specific reason - to make sure the mother doesn't just look at the infants and go, "Nope, waste of my time." and chuck them in the garbage. You've no doubt heard stories of mothers who hated the little kid in their stomach and then when all was said and done suddenly felt a wash of love for the newborn. That's biology at work - evolution's way of making sure that the species continues onward.
~~Fun facts with Arcaii~~~
What I suggest is having the mother stick around, at least long enough to find a suitable home for them. In fact, go ahead and cut out the middle cat entirely - just have her get the word out that kittens need a home, have a Clan cat hear about it or someone who knows that the Clan cats are civil enough to take in strange babies, and she can deposit them there, the Clan has more members, she gets off free (maybe the medicine cat can even give her some herbs to stop the milk), everyone wins.
Or, y'know, do something a little more special and unique and just have them born in the Clan and lose the little orphan Annie bullroar. Whichever.

Hailstorm
Name Rating: 2/10
Name Type: Lyrical
Name Reasoning: Hail- is meant for a grey tabby with spots for stripes, to emulate what hail looks like. A black and white cat doesn't really look like hail. His suffix really doesn't fit him either; I'm willing to bet that it's only used to go with the prefix.
A -storm cat, at least traditionally, is wild, unpredictable, and swings between a high and a low mood, and is renown for impatience. This cat is calm, calculating, and quietly observant, and likely to have patience in these observations. Actually, he has a couple of skills that he can be named for too, so there's that.
Alternative Name: Brightfang/Swiftfang. Bright- refers to a white and patched cat with the colors starkly contrasting one another, and Swift- refers to a black and white cat (a type of bird, not a description of movement). -fang references his equal skill in hunting and fighting.

Character Rating: 6/10
Character Reasoning: Other than his ambitions being the exact same as his brother's (which is more believable for this guy, considering that his brother wants to make a name for himself and doesn't care whether it's good or bad, and this cat seems more like the kind for approval, but still shouldn't be identical even if they are related), he seems just fine. I already covered history up there, and it still applies, but I want to know exactly how significant this argument was, and why it should be mentioned if Hail- didn't let it stop him from joining the Clan.
