Hey guys, I need a bit of rat advice. In January, my rat, Pepper, broke her back and died. Now her cagemate, Cream, has been fine, but I recently saw that she had URI, and she has a lump near her throat. So far she's been doing great, she just has some trouble going to the other floors of her cage (I have no idea how old she is, but I believe she is around three years old now- I got her from somebody who was moving after my mother said I could get rats). Is there any treatment I can give her that can help her?

I would suggest consulting your vet about that problem for if it it serious she might need medical attention right away.

So Slides tumor had gotten really big. She had lost most of her mobility and was getting sick loosing fur and getting blood blisters over her face. So we decided for her sake to have her pts. She was such a precious girl and I will miss her so dearly. But she went peacefully at the vets and now is at rest. I was very worried about taking her to the vets because I was scared that she would freak out but she was a perfect girl ♡

@Raven - I was told that you can prevent tumors occuring by breeding your girls. Of course thats just a theory but yeah.

My mom would murder me if i did that. XD I already have 5 rats and was never supposed to have more then 2 (Im good at convincing her) I am going to look into how much it costs to get her and her sister spayed. And how much it would be to get the tumor removed when/if it gets bigger.

i feel no matter how much you try to tell people rats make great pets, they look at you in disgust

where i live (as i live with my mom and its a senior complex) no one likes my rats and have even told the super about them, and i was told to get rid of them

yea, no

try explaining to her the pros of having rats, and try finding a reputable rat breeder (tho most of mine came from pet shops)search online for pros and cons

I find rats are better then hamsters and mice (tho ive had mice as pets too)

rats make great pets
-they carry less diseases then cats and dogs
-theyre not prone to biting (unless you pick them up a certain way or hurt them)(tho i have had 1 aggressive rat, and multiple rats who would bite for no reason-the ones who bit for no reason would only bite if my hand was in the cage, or if my hand was near the rat-the aggressive rat would bite at all times, you couldnt even hold her)
-they are cleaner then dogs and cats
-they can eat most people food (mine love chocolate bars, and steak ;.

i bought my first rat at a pet shop in sept 2007, my mom had to suck it up xD, tho she now loves rats ^^

Well my mom says that if my dad says yes then I can get rats... problem is my dad will never ever say yes. So basically she is setting me up to fail. My mom says that her problem is that she doesn't want another pet(s) in the house which is crazy because we only have three pets and a good sized house and I even told her that she won't even know that they're there because I will keep them in my room. Ugh, it's not fair....

how many rats do you plan on taking in? same gender of course

rat cages do not take up a lot of space, and rats are easy to care for, they dont require walks, but do need to be in at least pairs of the same gender

what other pets do you have?

I just want a pair of spayed females. I have two dogs and a cat. I see how the cat can be a problem but I can easily avoid injuries to my rats from her by closing my door and making sure she can't get into my room and open the cage(ferret nation).

when i had my cats, they were either afraid of them, or played with them, but never injured them

and when you buy female rats, they wont come spayed, it can be an expensive process from what i heard and its a risk to the rats

none of my females were ever fixed, when they were in heat, i found it cute, wiggly ears and arched back xD, they are also wiggly in your hands, they dont bleed like female dogs, and they dont howl like female cats in heat
