Shadowdown licks each of her kits' heads gently. She thinks quietly about names, "How do you name kittens here?" she asks.

Little Birchkit is a competitive tom. His mother is Shadowdown and he has one sister, Mistkit. He is a great little bundle of joy.

"It has to end with kit" he mewed, looking at her two, she-kit and Tom. "Here" he gave her borage to chew, so the milk would come.

Shadowdown chews the funny-tasting leaves thoughtfully. She thinks of some things she sees often, trees she thinks, birch "Birchkit," she says softly, licking a tabby tom's head.
