valkyrie returned gaia’s smile with a close-lipped one of her own. “likewise,” she replied. it was all a charade, of course, played for the sake of politeness; valkyrie had done her research on each and every one of the heirs well before she’d arrived. in fact, she’d started gathering information about her potential rivals the very day that she’d learned that they’d all be coming to domitian. and since everybody here was a potential rival heedless of how much she might like them as a person, well, that just meant that valkyrie already knew everything that had gone public about the novarian princesses and possibly more thanks to a wealth of resources that was not available to just any centaurian. the possible exception to this was capella, and the key word here was possible, as one could never be too certain about their allies. blood didn’t mean anything; altair was proof enough of that. then gaia turned her attention elsewhere, and valkyrie herself was brought out of their brief conversation by a sudden pressure on her wrist from where capella had grabbed it.
she listened to her younger sister’s breathless words with a mix of exasperation and fondness. this was honestly the worst possible time for capella to start acting like an actual teenager. couldn’t she have done this earlier? like, before they’d left centauri and preferably with somebody who wasn’t the king of a different planet? now, it had not escaped valkyrie’s notice that the boys here were far from a sore sight to the eyes, but as with other such weak emotions, she had learned to suppress whatever may come of these observations. the princess regarded the men with nothing but caution and a touch of hostility, too absorbed in her own suspicions to realize that she was probably the most untrustworthy one out of the lot. “<yes, that’s king castor,>” she muttered back, “<but get a hold of yourself, capella. we’re not here to admire the guys. everyone here would jump at the chance for the crown, and king castor is no different. as pleasant as he may seem both physically and personality-wise, he is not your friend. don’t let your feelings get in the way of this.>” she tapped the side of the other girl’s head as she finished the last sentence. capella’s mind was one of their more powerful weapons, not to mention one that would surprise their opponents; who would expect such a young, pretty thing to be so ferociously cunning? valkyrie couldn’t lose that advantage over some puppy crush that she was sure would blow over when her sister came back to her senses. first, though, it was up to her to talk the sense back into capella. “<we are here for the crown and nothing more,>” valkyrie continued, speaking into her ear in rapidfire centaurian. undoubtedly capella would not take kindly to being lectured right here and now, but valkyrie couldn’t let her sister keep walking around in this bubble of bliss. even if capella hated her for it, she would appreciate this advice in the long run; of that, valkyrie was certain. “<lead the man on all you wish, it could work in our favor, but whatever you do, don’t get attached. here and in all politics regarding the galaxies, emotions will only serve to make you — and in turn me — vulnerable and easily manipulated.>”
a thud! stopped her spiel in its tracks. upon seeing who had caused it, the young woman allowed her lip to curl in derision— it was the earthling. of course. valkyrie watched in contemptuous amusement as the poor girl gathered her fallen bags and attempted to strike up a conversation with prince turias of al’nair. she hadn’t intended to involve herself in anything concerning amara and her ignorance, but when the blonde expressed her shock at gaia’s ability to speak english, she just couldn’t help it; this was too good an opportunity to pass up. “of course we speak english,” she said, cutting harshly into the novarian princess’ welcome with an otherwise pleasant accent. valkyrie’s tutor had been a man from the united kingdom and she had picked up a standard british accent from him; nothing less than a native speaker would do for a royal, and he was one of the few earthlings that she respected. certainly, her opinion of amara was laughable in comparison to valkyrie’s opinion of her english tutor. “gods know why, but apparently the domitians believe that your planet’s language is important. therefore we all learned english as a second language growing up. personally, I don’t see the appeal, especially since you lot are so primitive. and,” she continued, looking amara up and down with disdain, “I find the fact that you believe we would be interested in your planet both sad and amusing. so please don’t flatter yourself; if I had any questions about earth, I would have gotten their answers without resorting to asking the enemy.” she turned away slightly in dismissal, but ever with a flair for the dramatic, she couldn’t help but impart a few more scathing words in conclusion. “in the future, I’d stick with talking about things you know; you’ve barely introduced yourself and I’m already feeling secondhand embarrassment for you.” though valkyrie would not ordinarily have dared to be so rude to one of the heirs as her typical modus operandi was far more machiavellian, she felt herself to be superior to amara, so it wasn’t like becoming her enemy would be a huge loss. she fully expected either gaia or another one of the heirs to come to amara’s defense, but she had no plans to hear them out; in her mind, nobody here could possibly feel anything but pity for the girl and any argument made in her favor would be out of pure courtesy. she looked away. somewhere deep down in her black, black, heart, valkyrie herself felt some guilt for being so nasty to her; after all, amara had only recently learned of all the galaxies and planets that had been communicating before earth had been brought into the network. but it was simply residue of a girl long dead, and it was gone as soon as it had come.
