natalia sat up abruptly, startled into wakefulness by the nagging sensation that she was being watched. having grown up in the midst of her clan’s near-constant warmongering, she’d developed what some might call a sixth sense in regards to such things out of pure necessity, and it had saved her life more than a few times. acutely aware of the warning bells ringing in her mind [danger enemy get up get up get up] what she meant to do was spring to her feet immediately and take out whoever — or whatever — had been watching her. instead what she did was a graceful faceplant into the ground the moment she pushed herself to her knees, overcome by a wave of nausea at the sudden movement. how long had she been out, anyway? come to think of it, what had she even been doing before she got here? this wasn’t a place she was familiar with, that much was for sure. she climbed to her feet slowly, taking more care this time, brushing sand off her outfit as she did a 360 in order to regain her bearings.
the first thing she noticed were the bodies sprawled out beside her like corpses: two of them, to be precise. the second thing she noticed were the bodies — or rather, the people — that weren’t lying around like they were dead, which concerned her more than anything else. with some wariness, she approached the cluster. tally was fully conscious of her vulnerable state; pounding headache aside, her limbs felt like they were filled with the sand that she was currently walking on; like they hadn’t been used in a considerable amount of time, though she had no idea why that would be. but it was her only option, confronting them; elsewhere, the beach stretched both ways as far as the eye could see, no other sign of life apparent. there was no way she was going to make it out of here alive on her own. besides, if they’d wanted to kill her, there had been plenty of opportunity to harm her while she was unconscious. who knew? maybe they were just as disoriented as she was. maybe they didn’t actually have hostile intentions.
drawing closer, the demon could see that they were huddled together around what appeared to be a piece of paper. unconsciously, she picked up the pace; whatever it said, she needed to see it. perhaps it would provide some clue as to their situation. “’scuse me, coming through,” she announced with her typical subtlety, pushing her way past a petite redhead and leaning over a brunet boy’s shoulder in order to scan the note. gameboard? puppeteer? and, far more concerning... “angel?” repeated natalia, bristling on instinct. angels were the enemy that her kind had been fighting with since forever; she’d been raised not to trust them, to kill them if at all possible. “why the hell would anybody think it was a good idea to bring an angel into this? bloody useless creatures. I can’t believe we’re all stuck with one now.” of course, she said this before she actually noticed the angel in their midst, a boy she’d completely overlooked in her haste to read the note. rather than attempt to make amends with her new teammate, whatever that meant, she narrowed her eyes at him in a clear message: she didn’t take back a word of what she’d said, and if he didn’t like it, well... she’d be more than happy to fight. he was probably the one she had felt watching her; god knew why he hadn’t attacked her yet. in fact, it was this and only this — the single, bewildering fact that he hadn’t made the first move while he still had the advantage — that kept tally’s own instincts at bay. contrary to popular belief, not all demons were savages, and she did possess a brain that reminded her that it was in her best interest not to try and maul somebody who it looked like she’d have to work with for the time being.
