Orchidpaw was quite eager to go hunting, bounding out of the camp before Starlingsong could even reply to her question about the location of today's hunting. Calling out to her apprentice that they would probably be following the curve of the lake and seeing what could be found near the water, the black she-cat padded calmly after her. The water would also serve to cool her cracked pads and clean any debris from them, meaning that seeing Blueheart or Pebbleheart about it would be much less painful when she did so later.
The sun was glinting off of the calm waves of the lake beautifully, not quite so bright that it hurt Starlingsong's eyes, but bright enough to make her squint as she looked out onto it. Across the water, she could see the enormous outlines of the mountains, the tall guardians that seemed to stand watch over them. She wondered what wandering through those mountains might be like, if even for a moment to catch a glimpse of what they had hidden within their rocky walls.
"Slow down there!" the she-cat called after Orchidpaw as her apprentice raced ahead. They were beginning to near the trees and Starlingsong could see the very prey that her apprentice was looking for sitting in a nearby tree - a squirrel. Her mouth watering at the prospect of fresh-kill, she turned to Orchidpaw, who had managed to slow down.
"See if you can catch that one," Starlingsong mewed, flicking her tail at the squirrel. It had not noticed them, as they were down-wind of it, giving Orchidpaw the perfect chance to catch her piece of prey.

It was not long before Blueheart was stirred from her sleep, though Pebbleheart wasn't sure whether it was his offer to share breakfast or if it was the presence of the leader, Icestar, in the den. The white tom was in the medicine den often and, even though the medicine cat apprentice could not be sure, he had a sneaking suspicion it might be because of Blueheart's constant presence there.
"Good morning, Icestar," he said respectfully before snatching one of the pieces of prey and beginning to eat. If Icestar was joining them for morning fresh-kill, Pebbleheart might as well start eating now - he wanted to be out of the den to give the leader and medicine cat some privacy. The tom felt awkward being around higher ranking cats such as Icestar and the deputy, Sunstrike, and he preferred to either be alone with Blueheart or not at all.
"Could I maybe go out and look for some herbs?" Pebbleheart asked once he was finished eating, his tongue swiping around his jaw to remove any remnants of the mouse. "I think we're running low on horsetail and comfrey. Marigold's a little understocked too." He waited patiently for his mentor to reply.

[ tom ] [ 25 ] [ warrior ] [ tagged: Nightfrost, Sparrowstorm, Sunstrike ]
It wasn't often that the red-brown tom woke with the rising sun, but today just happened to be one of those days. The first rays of light were entering the warriors' den when Martenfur felt himself waking from his sleep. Stretching luxuriously in his nest and yawning so that his jaw was as far open as it would go, the warrior padded out of the den. His muscles hurt from the battle training he had endured yesterday - Starlingsong had asked him to help with mentoring Orchidpaw in that field - and, to his surprise, the white she-cat had been quite adept at making him sore. Recollecting yesterday's events, he nodded to Orchidpaw and Starlingsong as he walked past, on his way to the warriors gathered near the entrance of the camp.
"Mind if I join in on your patrol?" he asked Sunstrike, who seemed to be leading it. The warrior nodded his head respectfully to the deputy and Sparrowstorm, a warrior his own age, as well as to Nightfrost, a younger she-cat. The nod to her was accompanied by a wink. How it was received, Martenfur did not know, but he was sure his charm was working it's magic on the she-cat. She had not been a warrior for long, but he was slowly worming his way into her heart - he was sure of it!
Patrolling was not his favourite warrior duty, that was for sure, but certain cats in the Clan made the boring activity bearable. Sparrowstorm, who Martenfur had been apprentices with, was one of these cats. The two had shared memories and, though their personalities were vastly different, playful banter could be established if the friendly red-brown tom tried hard enough to engage the much shyer tabby.
Nightfrost, however, was a much better choice when it came to picking a patrol, simply because she was a she-cat. And if there was one thing Martenfur could do better than anything else, it was charming she-cats.

Orchidpaw swiveled her head towards the squirrel, which was busy eating nuts and hadn't noticed her bright white pelt yet. She flattened herself as close to the ground as possible, not wanting to give away herself with her fur. Slowly, each pawstep carefully measures, she advanced onto th unsuspecting squirrel. Suddenly, the wind changed, so now Orchidpaw was upwind. "Mouse dung!" she cursed quietly. She burst out of the ferns she was hiding in, and chased angrily after the squirrel, which was now nearly at the trunk of a tree.
It dashed up the tree and chittered noisily on a branch, seemingly mocking Orchidpaw. She sighed, annoyed. Can't hurt to give it one last try, she thought, and moved silently to the other side of the ancient tree. She climbed up the side as silently as possible. All of a sudden, she came face-to-face with the squirrel. The squirrel shrieked, and Orchidpaw reached out a lightning fast paw and managed to snag the tail. Carefully, she dragged the squirrel closer to her and gave it a killing bite. "I did it!" she squealed.

He stopped mid sentence though, and her head tilted to the side curiously, a few moments passing by without a continuation of his sentence. He finally had said he had a bad night, and her expression changed from curious to sad in a matter of seconds. "What happened?" the she-cat asked, worry in her blue eyes.
Within moments, Pebbleheart offered to go gather some understocked herbs. "Yes, that would be lovely; thanks," the she-cat replied with a small smile, just before the leader Icestar stepped away from the exit of the den so Pebbleheart could pass. She glanced back at the organization of herbs in the back of the den, turning to the apprentice; "Also, Pebbleheart, I believe we are short on Lavender and Dock as well, if you wouldn't mind grabbing some," a small smile slowly began to creep onto her face once more as she awaited the young apprentice to pass for his journey for herbs. "Maybe I want to sleep through the day.." he muttered quietly, shifting in his nest to be more comfortable, his eyes finally opening to reveal the brightness of day just outside their den, and the clan members stirring around to get stuff done.

Hawkpaw finished grooming his fur and looked up to see Orchidpaw leaving with Starlingsong to hunt. He wondered where his mentor was and what he had planned out for today. He had fighting pretty much covered, being trained as a four moon old kit, but it wouldn't hurt to learn a few new techniques. Hunting he was fairly okay at but not the best since he had trouble making his pawsteps silent.
Hawkpaw looked around once again and stood up, walking around camp. He noticed the border patrol gathered by the entrance that consisted of Sparrowstorm, Nightfrost, Suntstrike and it looked like Martenfur wanted to join them. He looked the other way and noticed Dawnflight by herself. He gave a small sigh seeing no sign of Firestrike.

Venus sighed in relief, forgetting about her dislike of the dirty forest as she focused on following the tom back to camp. These cats could easily disappear and hide amongst the plants, unlike her.

kestrelbelly was barely awake, and she was the only lazy cat left lounging around in the warrior's den. she blinked her blue eyes open slowly as her jaws gaped in a yawn. it took her a while to realize that the warmth on her face was the morning sun, and that she had overslept yet again. springing to her paws, kestrelbelly scrambled out of the warrior's den frantically. once she reached the clearing the young warrior quickly relaxed and lifted her chin upwards a bit, putting on an act as if she had been up this whole time. she moved dramatically nonchalantly around the skirts of camp, quickly scanning the activity to catch up on what she had missed.

Nightfrost paused by the entrance as Martenfur padded up asking to join the patrol. She rolled her eyes as he winked at her and glared at him for a few moments. She didn't know the red-brown tom very well but enough to know about his reputation about flirting with every she cat he saw. She could have groaned when Sunstrike agreed to take the flirtatious Martenfur with them but stayed silent, instead deciding to give him another warning glare.
As soon as Sunstrike gave the order, Nightfrost exited the camp swiftly. Her senses were already alert, ears pricked and jaws parted as she took in all the smells. Her cool gaze swept the landscape before her, looking for any movement.

Starlingsong watched from a distance as Orchidpaw shuffled herself over to the tree, keeping her white pelt close to the ground to keep it hidden. The squirrel seemed oblivious, up until the wind changed directions and, suddenly, it pricked its ears and its tail stood on end. The black she-cat watched as her apprentice chased after her prey and couldn't help but laugh at her silliness.
Yet, her apprentice was determined to catch this squirrel she had set her heart on catching today. She continued to watch as Orchidpaw circled the tree and began to climb it. Marvelling at her apprentice's ability to stay so silent and wondering how the squirrel wasn't feeling the vibrations of the trunk, Starlingsong let out a cry of victory when she saw her apprentice snatch the squirrel in her claws and give it a killing bite.
"Great work!" Starlingsong called up to Orchidpaw. "Maybe we should head a little deeper into the trees, maybe we'll find some more prey there." Flicking her tail at the white apprentice to signal that she should follow, the black she-cat pushed away from the lake's edge and into the tree line. Her nose was immediately filled with the musky scents of the trees and, beneath that, the smells and sounds of birds - her favourite thing to hunt.
There was a chickadee pecking at something on the ground not too far away from her and Starlingsong dropped into a crouch instinctively, jaws slightly ajar. Out of the depths of her throat came a sound no other cat she knew could make: the sound of a chickadee call. The bird raised it's head, cocking it to the side slightly, before it began to approach her hiding place. Bunching her muscles underneath her, Starlingsong sprang, killing the bird swiftly. Silence during her hunt was not something she was very good at, so she took the approach of drawing her prey to her instead.
"And that is how you kill a bird," she crowed. Picking up the chickadee, she lifted her head to look for Orchidpaw, who had been following her. Instead, her yellow gaze met the ice-blue one of another and she flinched away, startled by the cat's appearance. He was slightly cross-eyed and Starlingsong immediately identified him as Raventhorn.

[ tom ] [ 19 ] [ medicine cat apprentice ] [ tagged: Blueheart, Icestar, Firestrike ]
The medicine cat apprentice as his mentor gave him permission to go and he nodded to both her and Icestar on his way out. The leader had been kind enough to step out of Pebbleheart's way as he exited the den. Free of the uncomfortable and stuffy air of the medicine den, Pebbleheart trotted away, leaving Blueheart and Icestar to their discussion. The apprentice was unsure whether Blueheart had told him to look for lavender and dock on his trip because they were actually understocked or because she wanted him gone for longer. He believed it to be the second, but he couldn't be sure.
Padding to the entrance of the camp, the small grey tom passed the patrol that was gathering and continued on into the forest, eager to get away from the bustle of the camp. His sister, Starlingsong, had also taken her apprentice out hunting, so there was a chance he might bump into her which would give him the time to tell her about his dream. Just the thought of it made his fur bristle and he calmed himself by sniffing at the air.
The smell of clean water was what he could smell first and foremost, but underneath that was the sweet scent of lavender and the more sharp smell of watermint. These were close enough to the camp that Pebbleheart decided he would get them on his way back from his expedition. Comfrey, dock, horsetail and marigolds would be found in the forest closer to the base of the hills that later on grew into the mountains that were visible across the lake.
Choosing to avoid the water's edge, where he would find herbs he did not need, Pebbleheart turned in the direction of the forest. Here, the scents were different, much more musky than in the clear air. It was easy to miss certain smells and the tom felt kind of sorry for he warriors and apprentices who were forced to hunt prey - he himself did not smell a thing. Perhaps it was this that caused him to almost trip over the ginger and white body of a cat crouching in the bushes. With a startled yowl, Pebbleheart jumped away, only to see that he had almost stepped on Firestrike, a warrior of LakeClan.

At Sunstrike's acceptance of his offer to join the patrol, Martenfur nodded in thanks and, tail held high, padded out of the camp. Though Sunstrike was the leader of the patrol, the red-brown tabby bounded ahead, as if scouting out the territory. He was not quite sure where they were going, but he assumed they would just be doing a quick perimeter check - along the edge of the lake, turning when the hills began to grow bigger and more rocky and into the trees, circling around to the camp.
Not wanting to be chastised by the deputy for running ahead and taking control, Martenfur dropped back once he had drank in the scents of the fresh air and fell into step beside Nightfrost, the only she-cat in their little patrol.
"Fine day, isn't it?" he said, not quite expecting an answer. "On a day like today we should be bathing in the sun or hunting or perhaps getting a little physical training in! Together, naturally." The tom winked at her, amber eyes sparkling. He hoped she would respond positively to his attentions though, from past interactions, evidence pointed to the opposite. Still, he was just getting started, and a positive reception of his approach would help greatly in improving his already high self-esteem.

Sparrowstorm followed along quietly behind Nightfrost and Martenfur, keeping his distance. He wasn't particularly interested in their conversation; he personally wished he was more like Martenfur, that he could be so openly flirtatious. Sparrowstorm inwardly laughed as he imagined himself awkwardly approaching a she-cat and muttering a quick 'hi.' No, he definitely wasn't the flirtatious type of tom, and he didn't care to listen in on the conversations of a tom who was. So instead, he moved closer to the border, his mouth slightly open as he checked the scent-markers of the dawn patrol to make sure they had remained uncrossed. The scent was especially strong so close to camp, so he really didn't think even a skunk would be stupid enough to cross it, but Nightfrost and Martenfur seemed distracted so he decided that he should probably concentrate on the actual job.
He padded along the border, constantly scenting the air and plants, his eyes flicking back in forth when he pulled up short, his hunter's ears pricked. He had picked up the faint scent of a starling, reminding him of the little bird Nightfrost had caught, and there it was- the little dark bird was perched on a branch above him, and when he looked at it, it let out a small noise and flew off. It's black wings suddenly, strangely reminded him of another warrior, Starlingsong; she was named for the bird, after all, and her pelt was sleek and black as expected by her name. She had been among the first litter of kits he'd ever seen; as his mentor had been a she-cat who'd always wished to be a queen but had never been able to have kits, he was constantly at the nursery with Littlestream telling him about kits and how important they are to the clan. It had been his first day of apprenticeship when he'd seen little Starlingsong, nearly a moon old, wobbling around clumsily and staring around with huge kit-gray eyes.
He flicked his ears, wondering where that memory had ever come from. Littlestream was long gone; she'd caught greencough when he was twenty moons and passed away, and he'd never talked to Starlingsong, let alone really thought about her at all. He hadn't realized he still had that memory until he'd seen the starling in the tree. Sparrowstorm couldn't really stop thinking about her as he went along, though; she wasn't that much younger than him- just a little under six moons, far enough apart to never really see each other due to rank and yet close enough to be friends -but that was basically all he knew about her. Maybe I'll talk to her, he thought absently as he returned to checking the border, the starling's call still ringing in his head.

Orchidpaw smiled as Starlingsong praised her. She followed Starlingsong to deeper in the forest, after burying her catch under the ancient tree. "You know, since my pelt is so bright, my stealth must be good," she remarked after bounding to catch up with Starlingsong. Suddenly, Starlingsong pounced, and Orchidpaw realized there was a bird now under her paws. "Nice catch!"
