I got distracted, so haven't got far in either of them, but I'll probably just watch 2003 for a bit...
I was thrown off track by SAO, which I have now completed!

I loved Full Metal Panic. I'll glance at Zero no Tsukaima and see what it looks like.
@( ͡° ͜ʖ ͡°): What anime is adapted from an English book? I know there are a handful of manga.
Are you thinking like Romeo x Juliet and Gankutsuou: The Count of Monte Cristo? I guess those are technically English books, but I think the plotline is a bit different in those anime isn't it?
The male lead in Zero no Tsukaima, doesn't look that strong, but he has a special ability (being able to use every weapon).
It has comedy, romance and a bit harem, but also fights.
I think you would like Soubi from Loveless as well, too bad the anime is short (it's Shounen Ai, but not much more romance than No.6).
Another anime that needs more episodes as well as Zombie Loan and Hatenkou Yuugi (those have nice male characters as well, but the animes are too short).
