((Yay writers block. I'm so drained this weekend...))

~|Hrafn|~Hunter|~ 46 Summers|~

He watched as she absorbed his words, though he wasn't sure what her reaction would be. Would she be angry? Embarrassed? Accepting? Hrafn simply arched one dark brow and waited for her thoughts to process. When she moved towards him, he wasn't sure if he should expect a nuzzle or a bite, so he simply sat still. Happy surprise surged through him when she placed her head against his chest. The words that she spoke warmed him within and he couldn't help but thump his tail happily behind him. A deep, satisfied murr rumbled through his chest and he placed his head atop hers, nuzzling slightly into the fur at the base of her skull.

"I'm glad that you're willing to entertain the idea." Hrafn placed a soft lick to the back of one ear. "I'll do my best to make you see what I see." With one last swish of his tail, he rose, his dark amber eyes crinkled in a toothy smile. "I suppose we should get back. We've been away for a time and we could be needed." He stepped away slowly, not quite ready to go back, but he knew that duty called. "We don't need to hurry, however." Another smile graced his great, dark face and he started back towards the pack.

As they walked, he kept pace beside her. Granted, he'd shared his feelings, but did they really know much about each other? There was only one way to rectify that. "We might as well get to know one another better. I've told you a bit about my past, but sadly I don't know much about yours. If you'd rather no re-live the past, I understand. It can be painful." Hrafn pressed his shoulder against hers lightly, simply letting her know that he was there if she did decide to speak. If not... "Is there anything you'd like to know about me?"

Xani
- Female - 21 - Beta -

Xani relaxed against Hrafn for a moment more before she felt the swipe of his tongue. While she said nothing, her mind was running amok. You can try, but I doubt you'll succeed. I've never been one for the positive things in life... As he stood, so did she. Xani met his eyes as he spoke, a slight, nervous smile creeping onto her own face in spite of herself. She just couldn't help it. This big brute was so lovable that it was contagious. "I think you're right. I doubt anything would happen that drastically, but we'd better be sure."

As he turned to head back, Xani followed his lead and fell into step alongside him. It was peaceful for a few moments before she turned to glance at him. His question made her pin her ears back a bit and glance away, but she relaxed when he offered to share as well. "There isn't much to say. I was born to a straggler. I don't know where her mate went, but he wasn't there when I first started remembering things. Because she was a straggler, the other pups didn't survive. From the start, I was the biggest and strongest. She wanted to ensure that one of us lived, and she chose me."

As she spoke, Xani's voice grew hard. Her eyes focused on the ground in front of her as they narrowed slightly. "We were together until I was 8. She wasn't the most loving, but she got the job done. I could always tell that she didn't really like me, though. We always fought. I think she had wanted an obedient but strong pup. She got me." She smirked slightly, but also huffed at the thought. "When I was about 8, I could sort of take care of myself. One day, I woke up to find her gone. No tracks to follow, and I decided I was better off without her. I joined the pack 10 years later in hopes of not having to struggle for food so much."

{{Ah, I just had to post something. I hope I did not push Lani too far in doing anything, but from Soriams' last post she seemed to be setting her up to move to the mammoth with Attican anyways. I miss you guys, hope everything is well.}}

Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

If it was based off of courage alone, the walk to the mammoth carcass for Attican was the hardest trek he had experienced yet. It was an internal battle inside his head - both the want to act like the brave and trusted Keeper that the Pack knew him as, and the desire to hide away and become reclusive scenery fighting their way to stake claim to the foreground of his actions. The combination of the two gave the brute a bit of an awkward gait as he walked, his tail tucked tightly beneath him at the very same time of his chest and shoulders being held to look strong. More than anything else his strange demeanor attracted more attention to him than his injury ever did, none of the wolves looking up or close enough to notice the opposing side of his face.

The rest of the short distance was closed and despite his mental struggles Attican and Lani made it to the massive meal. While not easy to admit, the sheer presence of the fae helped the Keeper along, essentially unintentionally guiding him so that he kept moving instead of chickening out and turning away. He was thankful for her.

Facing the literal wall of meat, he scanned the different portions available to him, the options seemingly boundless. It was not often, especially since the start of their journey, that he had options of what cut he wanted and for the moment the sheer nicety of that alone caused some of his worry to be temporarily forgotten. Exhaling a small sigh the Keeper sniffed in, scenting the torn carcass lightly so that he could decide what he fancied.

Ooh, oh.. Whew.. Wow... The Elder's head balked back.

While his empty stomach audibly gurgled in impatience for its desire to be fed, Attican's nose curled in repulsion to the scent that came through. Despite his want and need for it, the sheer richness of the meat before him was almost overbearing. "Oh, wow." He spoke half to himself, half to Lani. "That's... that's a little strong. Stomach's not quite used to that much anymore huh?" Trying to be optimistic the corner of his right lip turned a bit, hinting at a ghost of a smile.

Taking a moment to regain himself, the brute singly-eyed his newest opponent: lunch. Having not eaten in quite some time and the true strain he had gone through since he last had it almost seemed like his body did not know what to do with such a thing as food. Determined to be like his normal self \ and not let more things get to him however, the determined Keeper bit the bullet and shook himself out, clamping his jaws around the first section he could reach.

Eh, perhaps it was not the best idea.

Instantly hot angry tendrils gripped onto the face and maw of the Keeper, his injury making his biting capabilities pretty much at not. His head reared back in a stunned involuntary response, his throat letting loose a deep guttural growl of obvious displeasure. He instantly dropped the chunk he had managed to pull off, the piece landing with small 'splat.'

It was an unforeseen complication to his injuries that in retrospect the older brute should have thought about before just simply diving in. Surely all the musculature attached to the side would be effected as well, all the tendons and sinews having once been attached to one another. Attican sat for a few moments, single eye staring at the fallen chunk of meat. Even without his left pupil the Keeper could feel the turn of heads and looks upon his turned figure that his small utterance had provoked. Now he really had no way of getting out of things.. Surely it was concern that made their attention change, but concern and pity was exactly what the brute did not want as of this moment. Even Lani was forgotten in it all, his mind turning completely inward. Still fixedly focusing downward, options raced through his head.

'Run. ...Well, run? .. No. Don't run, face them. You have to face them at some time. But.. Not now. If not now, when? .. You can't hide forever. I could try. ....No you can't. I know that.'

A few concerned footsteps padded up behind him. "Keeper?"

...

'...Well.. you gonna answer them?.. No. Yes you are. ..I know that.. but I don't want to. They're waiting.'

His injury had dullened to a small tingle and throb now, though unfortunately it looked worse now due to the blood having raced to his face. Given no other alternative Attican slowly sat up, turning his body around to face his inquirer. It was a mid-adolescent silver fae, one that usually took to the care of the smaller pups. "Yes young one?" His voice sounded tired and clouded. A few gasps were distributed amongst the few in attention, the female even taking a step back or two. Still she stood though, her head lowered slightly to the ground, looking down ever other pass.

"I- I was just wondering if you were okay Keeper.. I I'm sorry."

Attican's paws shifted uncomfortably in the snow, still wishing to be in any other situation right now. But he was still the Keeper of the Pack though and his situation would not allow him to break his duty. Trying his best to muster passable authority though he took a shaky breath. "I am alright dear one.. just healing."

Shifts in the foreground made the brute's ears swivel, small whispers motioned between a few others. His nose flared, heart hastening pace. They were talking about him.

Once again irrational thought processes raced through the cogs of his brain, emotion unfortunately still becoming the driving forefront of his actions instead of his usually level and calm-headed rationality. A small wind blew from his side, the smell of the carcass wafting lightly past him again.

"I apologize." He gruffed, standing up abruptly. "I-" he looked over at the patch of trees that he had originally entered the clearing from. "... am going to dispel myself from your presence now."

Without waiting for another response or action from anyone Attican moved forward, his pace nearing a trotting run. It felt devastatingly far to reach the safety of the trees, his tail tucking again as he drew nearer. With a final bound he was enveloped into them, the foliage obscuring his figure from everyone. Safety. He was not ready yet, pure and simple.

Quickly locating a good base of a tree the Keeper curled himself up, the outstretched roots working like the edges of a bed. Gently his head came to rest on his crossed forepaws, lightly tilted to the right side for comfort. Eye closed, he rested, wishing the world away.

Meanwhile as he slept, his malnourished stomach growled in reminder that the Keeper still had yet to eat.

((I'm itching to write as well. I didn't want Resin to ditch Ahote, but I'm going to have to. He can stay asleep and she can wake up and do...stuff. I miss you all as well. (: I hope things are going well for each of you. ))

~|Hrafn|~Hunter|~ 46 Summers|~

Black ears flicked forward, catching every word that Xani loosed. He appreciated the fact that she would open up to him so soon. Her puphood had been rough. He understood her disposition much better now. Honestly, he couldn't imagine growing up without a loving pack; without parents to protect you; without siblings and other pups to romp and grow with. Shaking his head lightly, he brushed his shoulder against hers, simply letting her know that he was there. "I'm sorry that your past has been so difficult, but at least it made you the wolf that you are today. I doubt many of those in the ScarPaw Pack could have lived through the same hardships. That's why you're the Beta and they aren't."

The slow pace was nice and relaxing. The birds were singing above them. From the brush, he could hear rabbits and other small things bouncing about. It was a welcome change from recent events. Who wouldn't prefer to walk in the sunshine rather than getting devoured by it?

Bringing his attention back to the fae beside him, Hrafn cleared his throat. It was only fair for him to share his past since she had shared hers, but a part of him felt bad for doing so. His puphood hadn't been horrible. He had been loved and well cared for. Saying such things felt like rubbing salt into the wounds of Xani's past, and yet he had to say something. "My puphood was uneventful. There were three of us; two sisters and myself. We all grew up in a smallish pack in the far, far North, up a peninsula that cut through the middle of the ocean." Hrafn took a moment to blow a bit of snow away from his nose. "When I was older, a female caught my attention. We became mates and left to form our own pack. It was a small pack, but we were happy. Then the illness struck and killed them all. I watched them die and I stayed fit and healthy. There was no reason to stay, so I began to wander along alone."

The next bit was a bit fantastical. A bit 'Out There' as the pups said. It wasn't something that he particularly liked sharing, but he would do so for her. "One night as I dreamed, the ancestors came to me. They showed me a snowless land full of tall, white barked trees covered in red leaves. 'Go South' they told me. They promised that I would find everything that I needed if I just went South." He stopped speaking momentarily, glancing towards her and cracking his trademark smirk. "They must have been telling me the truth, eh?" Snorting softly, he shook out his coat. "I haven't felt this content in years. It's as if all is right in the world." They had stopped walking and he hadn't even realized it. Taking the opportunity, he turned and slid his dark cheek along her lighter one. "If we make this work, neither of us will ever have to worry about being alone again. There will always be someone beside us to help in the fight. The burdens of life will be spread thinner and will be easier for us both to bear." Again he smiled. "I don't know about you, but I definitely don't see that as a bad thing."

~|Resin|~Alpha Female|~ 40 Summers|~

Though Ahote hoped that she would be there when he woke, she would not be. There was only so long that she could remain asleep. After a certain time, every little noise woke her. The sun, still shining in the sky above, burned into her eyelids and she growled at it in annoyance. She tried as hard as possible to stay asleep, but the screaming of the birds overhead was the last straw. Even though she was careful to not wake him, the dark female jumped up with a growl and stalked off through the trees.

"How he can sleep through that racket, I'll never know..." Still she grumbled to herself, a scowl furrowing her brow. Silently she moved through the trees, sticking to the shadowy places. The further South they went, the hotter the sun beat down upon him. Her thick, dark coat absorbed the suns rays, threatening to bake her. If it was this hot now, how would she ever be able to handle the heat in the red forest? Once the snow was gone... Snorting, she shook her head. She didn't want to think about it.

Resin had almost made her way back to the mammoth and the rest of the pack when she saw a lone trail of large tracks leading away from the kill site. The tracks had a hurried pattern to them. Whoever left them behind seemed distressed. Veering to the right, she followed the trail. Before she even found him, she knew who the tracks belonged to. Attican's scent clung to the snow and grew stronger as she moved closer. Soon he came into view, curled up in a ball asleep. It was odd for the Keeper to keep himself apart from the rest of the pack. It was odd for him to want to be alone at all. The only one that didn't like being alone more than Attican was Ahote. For a moment she felt bad for leaving the patchwork brute behind, but there were things that she needed to do.

Pulling up before him, she inspected his wound while he slept. It didn't look as bad as it had, but it still had a long way to go before it healed completely. Rather than having him wake and catch her staring, the Alpha sidled up beside the big brute and pressed her side against his as she lay down. She'd had enough sleep, so she simply lay there, head on her black paws, keeping the sleeping Keeper company, though he didn't yet know it.

Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Despite the means of how he got there, Attican's dreams were actually good as he slept. Pleasant memories and wishful scenarios floated past his slumbering head peacefully, wafting themselves around in a dreamful tale. Excluding the sparce and quiet rumbles of his belly the rest of him was still, cozied by the partial bed that the tree roots provided.

Resin's entrance caused only a singular stir from the Keeper, but even then it did not disturb him in the slightest. Years of being enveloped by the Pack had trained his body to be used to these types of movements, therefore not becoming means for him to arise. Still he dreamed on.

_________

"You know Attican, simply staring at her isn't exactly gonna impress her in any way.. In fact, it's kinda creepy if you ask m-"

A younger still-Fighter abruptly shoved himself into his friends shoulder, embarrassedly hissing for him to be quiet.

"Kantuk!" He spoke through gritted teeth, caught in a wide, amber-eyed grimace. "Shh.. she might hear you."

The brute smiled proudly. "I know."

The Pack was currently on move to scope out for some new hunting grounds. Every year this small trek would happen, usually a days-worth of journey for the group to decide where would be the area that they'd mostly call their new hunt site. It was a progressive thing to do their Keeper had said, making sure that one specific herd or or range was not overused, therefore continuing balance to the lands and reducing risk for famine or rise of other issues. However for the two brutes who's say really was not that weighted, it was a good excuse to oversee and perhaps talk to some of the females of their species...

Attican's ears flicked downwards, motioning for the two to divert directions slightly to the right. Best friends could be so treacherous sometimes, sure he meant well but... this was a fae they were talking about. And not just any fae either, it was
her.. what if he messed it up for him??

Once a decidedly good enough distance away Attican looked at his Hunter friend. "Sorry.." he mumbled, blinking a few times as he glossed over the snow. "I just really don't wanna blow this."

"Eh you won't! After all, what could possibly happen?"

A million different disastrous scenarios ran past the Fighter's head.

"A lot."

"Just don't stutter." Kantuk spoke, nodding his head definitively. "..Or blank out.. or accidentally insult her... or trip, or smile weird, or sneeze on her, or come off as too confident, or come off as shy either - fae's don't like that - And make sure you compliment her, maybe tell her that she smells good... that is unless she smells bad in which you would have insulted her so that wouldn't really-"

Attican pushed his shoulder again, ears now pinned back to his skull. "You are NOT helping!"

At first the brute laughed, his tail swinging back and forth good-naturedly. He was one hardly far from a joke and of course his best friend had no immunity to his antics whatsoever. In fact he was usually the brunt of them. However as Kantuk looked over his friend, he noticed how truly apprehensive and distressed over the matter he seemed to be. It was obvious that this situation was in no way a joke to the Fighter and that there was true worry that perhaps things wouldn't work out. Knowing not to push too far he cut the horseplay. "Don't worry so much over it, you'll be just fine. You're Attican for gosh sakes, everyone has always said that you could pick up any female at a moments notice." A gentle smile pulled across his face and he let out a relaxed sigh.

"Eh yeeahh," the lighter brute started out, clearly not encouraged by anything his friend just said. "But this isn't just ANY female from the Pack... this is
Annu we're talking about. She came from another pack to here.. she's seen more than we have and knows what other potentials are out there. What if I'm not to par for her? What if I'm not good enough?"

Kantuk shrugged his blackened shoulders, taking the words to heart. He though for a moment, turning his head to look at the brute straight in the eyes. "Then you figure out why. And if you can't be what she wants, then she isn't for you in the first place. Sometimes things are meant to be, and then other times they are not. But you will never find out your chance if you never go out and try."

...

Wise words from a still partially hormonal, barely-not-adolescent adult brute. Yet they had been influential enough to muster up enough courage in his friend to go take his first step to talk to his future mate.

_________

Attican's breathing stepped up a bit, the first sign of him waking up. Slowly his younger dream-self began to melt away, fading into the 73 year old brute that now laid within the roots. It had been a peaceful rest, and despite his hunger, he felt slightly refreshed.

His nose twitched, scenting a new smell that hadn't been there when he had first gone to rest. The rest of the memories of his dreams faded, puffing away until perhaps the next time that he laid down for slumber. "Muuhmm.." He mumbled, eye blinking itself open. Quickly he felt a body next to him, the feel of warm fur, pressing against his curled up back. "Hello?" He asked, yawning as he shifted to see who it was.

It was Resin. He should have known.

"Mmm.. good morning." He started, pushing his forepaws away so that he came to sit up. "Although I guess it is no longer morning at all." Unlike his timidness and embarrassment he felt with the Pack, Attican had no qualms or worry when it came to the Alphess being in his presence when it came to his injury. She had already seen it for one, and had in fact had been the one to essentially 'fix' him in the first place.

Yet at the same time the Keeper was aware that a question was sure to be coming, and the answer to it was not one that he was so proud of. Neither him not the Alphess were slow to notice things and the fact that she was there was enough to draw enough questions upon himself to wonder how much she knew. To add insult to injury his stomach grumbled slightly, still reminding him of his need to eat.

"Can I help you Resin?"

~|Resin|~Alpha Female|~ 40 Summers|~

The muffled sounds and small, random twitches told on the old brute. He was dreaming. Resin kept as still as she could and slowed her breathing. Dreams were important things and she didn't wish to wake him and interrupt. Her left ear began to itch something awful, but she ignored it. If she stayed still, she would be nothing more than a piece of the environment to the Keeper. He would detect nothing that would jar him from his dreams.

As she waited she lost herself in thought. Many things flowed through her mind like the trickling of a stream. The dark female wondered when the Keeper would wake. She wondered if he was alright. She wondered why he had gone off on his own. Doing so was a dangerous thing. He was far from being healthy. The two-leggers could have crept up behind him and ended what they had started. No, running off was not a wise decision on his part. Resin couldn't believe that Lani had let him do so. Not that she was his keeper, mind you, it was simply against her nature to let him go.

Resin thought of Ahote. He must still be sleeping. His burns were extensive and would take time to loosen and heal. She would have to remember to drag some more meat back for him. He would surely need it. A sudden ache to be with him rose inside of her, but she pushed it down. This was Attican's time. Though he would deny it, he needed her here. Someone had to protect him while he went through this transition. She was sure that he was here on his own because of his eye, or lack thereof. She doubted that he had come to terms with the loss as of yet, which was no surprise. Not many could lose such a vital piece of themselves and accept it so quickly.

Her pondering was interrupted by a sudden intake of breath and movement beside her. It seemed that her Keeper was waking. She waited for him to adjust to consciousness and smiled when he commented about the time of day. "No, not quite morning. Not quite night either. The days are getting longer." Pulling herself to a seated position, she took the opportunity to scratch the itch that had plagued her for the past few hours. An appreciative murr escaped her maw and she closed her eyes, relishing the long awaited relief.

His question made her open one eye and arch a dark brow. "No, you can't." Repositioning herself on her other side, she turned so that they faced one another. "I should ask the same of you, but I won't." It was a delicate topic and she wouldn't push it. If he needed to talk about it, she would gladly give him both ears. Rather than let them both dwell in silence, she attempted to change his train of thought. Perhaps pulling the brute away from thoughts of his eye would lighten the weight within him.

"Ahote still sleeps. His wounds are tight and painful. I don't know when he'll be able to move enough for us to continue our journey." A sound from above caught her attention and she looked upwards, watching as two squirrels chased one another through the conifers. "You know he confessed his love for me." She continued to watch the chittering pair bounce about, their bright red tails flashing like the sun. "I returned the sentiment." Now she brought her attention back to the one eyed Keeper, a twinkle in her own yellow orbs. "Odd, isn't it? I didn't think I was capable of such feelings anymore." She stretched her forelegs, splaying her black toes. "I've noticed that you and Lani seem to be enjoying one another's company." Though she had issues with the mouth on the older white female, she was glad that the pair of elders could connect as they had.

Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

______________________________________________________________________________________________________________

"No, not quite morning. Not quite night either. The days are getting longer."

Attican nodded his agreement, gently stretching his mouth out into a yawn. The ache from his hasteful bite had disappeared, but now with the discoverance of the potential soreness it could have the brute was now careful of what his mouth did.

"No, you can't. I should ask the same of you, but I won't."

The pleasant memory dreams seemed to do a wonder on the older Keeper, because if Resin had said this exact string of words before his rest it would have sent him into a flurried fit, but right now all it did was cause him to shrug his shoulders halfheartedly. "There really is nothing that anyone can do, it is just something that I really must deal with myself." Nodding to his own words the brute blinked subconsciously, unsure of where to bring the conversation from there. Usually the Keeper was able to bring and elongate any sort of conversation with someone, his ample sociability having been trained from being the mediator and storyteller for so long. Yet this was different and about him and his struggles - this was a whole different ballpark.

Thankfully Resin also seemed to sense this and quickly the silence was ended with a new topic about Ahote. The brute nodded, knowing that the Fighter also very much had a long healing road ahead. He was just about to comment on the matter when Resin began to speak again.

"You know he confessed his love for me... I returned the sentiment."

It was like someone inflated a balloon inside of him, Attican's chest filling up with drawn air. His face lit up, the original twinkle brought back into his one good amber eye.

Pride. What pride he felt.

"Oh my dear Resin.." He breathed, all of his former worries completely puffed into the wind. "My dear Golden girl.. congratulations."

What a wonderful thing. Of course the Keeper had seen the growing chemistry of the two wolves for some time, basically ever since Ahote had come to join ScarPaw, but he had always wondered if the patchwork brute would truly be able to break down the closed and barricaded walls of the Alphess's heart. It was by no easy task that he did so and to hear such things brought a deepened warmth to the Keepers's heart. Resin deserved to be happy and there seemed no other to do that better than the Fighter.

"Mm... congratulations." "He reiterated, looking her over. A genuine smile pulled up his face, his nose reaching over so that it pressed into the female's cheek. "I know you will do well together."

"Odd, isn't it? I didn't think I was capable of such feelings anymore."

Pulling back, Attican nodded in agreement. "Oh yes I do underst-

Accidentally cutting him off Resin spoke once more.

"I've noticed that you and Lani seem to be enjoying one another's company."

This phrase took Attican aback slightly, instinctively drawing his head closer to his chest. Again the topic of himself threw him off a bit. "Mm.. yes. But not like you." The Keeper turned his head to the left, absently looking at a dead and curled leaf on a nearby dying bush. "Lani is a great fae and I know she yearns for something more.. but I do not think that this heart can do it."

He knew he was being hypocritical, both happy and having been wanting for Resin to find a new match in her life for some time. But for him he did not think the same.

"I could not take another mate."

((Hey guys, I got a message from Soriams today. There's a chance that she'll be back and operational soon! We'll be able to get this story on the road if everyone is still into it. Also, we're still looking for new players, so if you know anyone that'd be interested, have them ship over a form.))

((Hey there guys! First and foremost, I have to apologize for my long and unexpected absence… It is a whole calamity of errors that have simply screwed everything up and I've had the most horrible time sorting everything out and getting back into writing. Work schedule changed and I got new responsibilities, joined a gym, got sick, hubby got sick, friend left his girlfriend and had to move out on short notice (into our house…) dad's birthday / mother's day / anniversary of mom's death (yeah, that one sucks), more coworkers quitting and not being replaced in my department (we've worked together for 6 years *sniff*) and last but not least, 2 conventions including comic con... This is quite literally the first thing I've written in months, and I hope it isn't too bad…))

Ahote
Male | 46 | Fighter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Ahote's exhausted form quickly fell into a deep and all-consuming sleep. The most basic of needs fulfilled, and his stomach full of fresh food, his body pushed away everything else and tugged him away into healing unconsciousness. His breaths slowed, coming in slow and shallow so that his chest barely rose at all, and he lay deathly still. No dreams disturbed the silence in his mind, nor was the outside world able to reach him where he now lay. For Ahote, there was nothing more than a timeless black void that lay heavily over him like a thick blanket of fresh snow.

Wrapped as he was in his cocoon of oblivion, Ahote was completely unaware of Resin's thoughts and listless slumber beside him, as well as her eventual departure. His form sunk limply into the depression she had left behind, and the only sign of life from him was a soft whuff of air that escaped his lips as he settled into it. Now laying flat on his side with his burns laying naked to the sky, Ahote's body slowly became polarized: the cold snow melted beneath him and soaked his fur, while his exposed skin roasted in the sun. It was an odd sensation, and one his body found nearly impossible to cope with. Any creature that was able to move, would have done so a long time ago, and sought either shade or sun to equalize their temperature. Thus, his mind slowly began to quicken, his brain nattering away at his deep sleep, presenting him with images from his past in an attempt to rouse him.

Ahote had no recollection of the beginning of the dream, in his mind it had always been there, filling the darkness but unnoticed, as though his attention had been elsewhere. It was a strange feeling, to know that he dreamed and yet be unable to wake or move, nor change the dream in any way. No matter how he tried to rationalize it, or push himself away into either deeper sleep or wakefulness, it was there all the same: the distinct sound of rushing water, flowing quickly and with purpose somewhere nearby. He was far too tired and groggy though, to really pay attention to it, and for awhile, he simply tried to ignore the sound. Its insistence slowly wore on him though, and began to tug on his lazy consciousness. "Stupid water…" he thought, and as though his acknowledgment suddenly gave the stuff form, he found himself laying flat on his side in a very wet, and very cold stream.

The water raged and rushed past Ahote as though he were a stone in a rushing river, like the one they had taken such pains to cross and escape the gnashing teeth of the infected ones. Yet, no matter how it battered him, tugging at his ear and rushing past his nose, he was held fast. The sensation was quite annoying, but oddly brought with it no fear of drowning, and he let in a deep sigh, resigning himself to put up with the irritation and fall back into a deeper sleep. Curiously, that breath brought with it not the crisp smell of ice he had expected, but rather the strange wavering sensation of super-heated air. Not smoke, nor the acrid stench of pitch that followed, but the heavy press of pure heat, as one would imagine the scent of the sun.

This oddity was enough to finally coax Ahote's dream self into opening his eyes. However, the sight that met him was nothing short of utter chaos. His left side it seemed was still submerged and his vision on that side swam and danced in time with the current. His right side was met with a near blinding brightness, that slowly began to settle out into a writhing mass of orange and yellow flame with tiny white-hot tongues licking at it's surface.

The dream brought him no fear, not even a hint of the terror that had befallen Ahote and caused the burns that crossed his flank and hip. Instead, he stared up at it in fascination, watching its tumultuous mass, turning and heaving in on itself only to boil up again. It was as if he were trapped between two world, both vying to take over the other half of his body. For the moment at least, they both seemed to be at a complete stalemate, and he was unable to sink into the water, nor were the flames able to consume him. The outlandish nature of this world of opposing elements eventually caused his mind to revolt, and the dream destabilized. Liquid and plasma drew closer to one another until they suddenly collapsed into a blinding white light. Then just as soon as it had come, the brightness raced away, diminishing into a tiny white point...

Ahote awoke with a gasp, his eyes flying open only to be blinded by the midday sun. Shivering and panting, he clamped them closed again and struggled to his feet. The dream had left him confused and lost, his traumatized body urging, begging him to move at all cost and he was oblivious to everything else. Had Resin been there, he may well have tripped over her as he blindly thrashed his way out from under the tree. Crashing into the rock wall, he growled, and seemed surprised at the sound before finally managing to pull himself out into the full sun. There he stood for a long time, shaking as he sucked in air. It wasn't until the tremors that wracked his limbs subsided that he opened his eyes.

As his vision settled and slowly cleared, the sight that met Ahote made no sense. There were two great furry limbs before him, impossibly long before they disappeared into holes in the snow, only the barest impression of knuckles and wide, club-like paws, were visible in the darkness around them. He had no idea where he was, or what he was doing there, nor, at that moment, could he even be certain that the appendages before him were his. Slowly, he drew in a deep, steading breath and lifted his head, leaving behind the tree-like vision for that of a dark shade cast against the white snow.

This too Ahote stared at for a long moment, taking in the shape of four legs that spread away from him, grossly elongated by the retreating sun. A ways off, they merged together into a blockish shape, punctuated by a protrusion at either end. Curious, he was studying the shape, when suddenly two tiny shapes flicked into view atop it and he startled back. Terrible pain shot through him and he crumpled to the ground, landing hard on his backside, and in that instant everything came back to him. The fire and the terror, the days of running and fear. And Resin. The last at least brought Ahote some comfort, and determined not to let her find him a sorry lump in the snow, he gritted his teeth and clawed his way back up to his feet.

Back on his feet once again, Ahote craned his neck and stretched his back as best he could before gingerly turning to lick the wet from his fur. It would have been easier to shake out his pelt, but the way the blistered skin pulled at his every move, he thought that sounded like a profoundly bad idea. In this way, he busied himself for awhile, wondering where Resin had gone and resisting the temptation to go looking for her. Not that he was really worried about her, he knew better than most that she could take care of herself. It was just... So dammed quiet out here! The trees ate up the sound, even as the cliff-face tried to throw it back. Even the wind was still and muffled, and his ears strained to hear it whisper, longing to hear it howl just for the sake of hearing something.

Finally, having exhausted what little he could to do to distract himself from the solitude that surrounded him, the gregarious wolf could take it no longer and Ahote limped away from their makeshift den. As he passed beneath the trees, looking for the clearing where the pack should be, he made a concerted effort to place all four paws firmly on the ground. The movement pulled painfully on his sore skin, but he knew well enough if he didn't move the scars would tighten around him and he would never walk normally again.

After a few moments, and more than a few growls of frustration, Ahote pressed out of the trees and out into the clearing. Only to find the it empty. His heart sank in disappointment, on then remembering that the pack had most likely moved closer to the kill to eat, and his forward progress stalled while he tried to decide what to do. There was a great swath of paw prints leading off to the west, and it would be no trouble at all to follow them, but at the same time, he was already exhausted from the small distance he had come.

In the end, Ahote simply couldn't stand the thought of knowing his pack was close and not going to them. Thus, he picked up his resolve and hobbled on. Luckily enough, the trip was not long and he was able to pick his way through the thick screen of underbrush without it scraping his raw skin too badly. The smell of food and, better yet, the scent of his pack brought a smile to his face, and he subconsciously picked up his pace a little. Though it pained him, Ahote barely felt the added strain and soon passed under the last of the tangled bows and out into the sun of the clearing.

The sight that met him could not have pleased Ahote more, and letting a little bark of happiness escape him, he hurried as best he could into the pack. Nearly everyone had finished eating, and that suited him just fine, as it meant more talking and less chewing. Curiously though, it seemed as though a group had moved off back into the forest, and there were more rising to follow, but a few caught sight of him and came to greet the injured fighter. Unlike the now disfigured Keeper, Ahote had no such fears about showing his own injuries, he merely wanted to be close to them, and didn't even consider what they might think of him. All were greeted with a happy smile and a lick on the cheek, and the barest wag of a tail. To do more caused more of a strain on his backside than he could bear, but all of it mattered not: he was home.

Making his way into the thickest part of them, Ahote found a place where a few pups had stayed behind, and happily collapsed into the middle of them. There he pressed his burns into the welcoming snow and rolled on his back with a contented sigh. For the moment, the pain was but a shadow in the back of his mind, and all he wanted was to talk and feel the closeness of the young ones.

Nuzzling one of the pups who crawled up next to him, Ahote looked down at the trail-worn youngster, "So, where has everyone gone off to now?" he asked, smiling when she rolled over onto her back to peer up at him from upturned eyes.

"S'went with Lani to talk ta the Keeper," she replied playfully, pawing at his muzzle.

Ahote nipped at her paws, nibbling at the pads until she giggled. What could they all be talking about? It was strange, to say the least. He was sure if Attican had anything important to say, he would have announced it to the pack. So why seek him out? Was there some trouble? Or worse yet, some discontent they felt needed to be voiced as a group? At least Lani was with them. He knew she cared deeply for the Keeper, and at the very least he would have her by his side.

The curiosity was practically killing him, but Ahote could quite simply go no further without resting, and for now, he resigned himself to basking in the attention of the pups.

Lani
Female | 57 | Hunter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Lani, bless her guileless heart, had not a clue of the inner turmoil that faced poor Attican. She wasn't without empathy, and knew that his injuries must hurt him, but the emotional torment he suffered and the wounds to his pride were completely beyond her. The ample little hunter could scarcely ever see beyond her own wants and feelings under the best of circumstances, and now in her exuberant reunion, she simply assumed that everything would be just as it always was. Thus she sat happily in the snow next to him as he spoke with Xani and Hrafn, proud as a partridge at having been the one to 'discover' him.

After a few words passed between them, Attican seemed ready to move on, and Lani hopped up to her feet to walk with him back to the kill. She had already had her fill, but would be more than happy to keep him company while he ate. Perhaps she might give him that bath finally when he was done? The thought brought a warm, introspective smile to the fea, and she was blessedly silent for the few moments it took to approach the carcass.

Stopping in front of the wall of meat, Lani stooped to lap up some of the blood-covered snow, enjoying the wolfish ice-treat until Attican's words brought her attentions back to him, "Oh, wow. That's... that's a little strong. Stomach's not quite used to that much anymore huh?"

In response, Lani nodded sharply, quite proud of herself and her role in taking the animal down. "Yup, that's right. Not every day we get to eat like the royalty we are," she chirped back, grinning.

At that point, it seemed as though Attican was ready to get down to business, and Lani situated herself to be close by, taking the time to rub some of the blood from her face and lick the frozen blood and ice from beneath her toes. What unfolded next, she couldn't exactly say, but the next thing she knew the Keeper had turned and bolted from the kill, rushing past a very startled looking youngster. "Attican! Wait!" she called after him, leaping up to her feet. "Where are you going?" she added in a small voice, stopping after only a few steps when it became apparent that her words had fallen on deaf ears.

Confused and heartsore for him, as he was obviously in some sort of distress, Lani rounded on the younger female. "You! What did you do?!" she said, her attempted growl coming out more like a mixed up whine.

The younger fea startled in surprise, and looked back at the others who had followed her for some sort of protection from the crazy old wolf, but unsurprisingly found none. "Nothing! I-I mean, I just asked him how he was, and he dropped his meat and ran," she said, eyeing Lani warily. "Said something about getting out of sight or something..." she finished, hoping that it would be enough to satisfy the elder.

Lani grumped, sitting back on her haunches and mumbling something about sky-headed pups. What could have happened in those few moments to cause all of this, she wondered? Confused and uncertain what to do, Lani's little round ears pressed down against the back of her head and she looked down at her paws. Around her, she could hear the others talking, yammering about the Keeper's injuries. Was he really missing an eye? How could that have happened? Was he going to live? Why did he keep running away? Did the two-leggers steal part of his soul? Was he going to turn into one of them?

All of it was ridiculous of course, and had it been anyone other than Attican, Lani would have been right there with them in the thick of the rumor mill. If there was one thing Lani knew besides hunting, it was gossip, and this was going to be the juiciest topic for weeks, especially if Attican kept running away from it. There was nothing that gave speculation power like evasion.

Letting out a snort, Lani got to her feet, ready to find herself a nice place to take a nap, when a sudden idea hit her. Maybe Attican couldn't eat? Did it hurt too much to chew? That all made sense, and the chitter chatter of the normal preening-club hens gave her a sudden idea. They were all curious about him, and she had no doubt they all wanted to see his scars, so why not put them to use?

Turning back around, Lani walked herself right into the middle little circle, drawing more than a few rolled eyes and here-she-comes-again looks. "Hey you feather-brained pups! That poor keeper has never done anything to any of you besides guide you and tell you pretty stories, and you're going to sit there and gossip while he goes hungry." she said, glaring at each in turn until they looked away. "Why don't you make yourselves useful? Everyone grab a mouthful of meat and make it soft, like you would for a pup. Then take it to him and tell him how much you've missed him. she finished with a nod, affirmative as though they had all unanimously agreed to her plan even though none said a word.

With that, Lani turned on her heel and walked off, looking for others she could wrangle into coming with her. She nosed sleeping hunters awake, and shamed even the most stoic fighters into getting to their paws to help. Even sleepy Vali, who had spent the night watching was driven into the cause. Lani had lead many hunts in her time, and was more than persistent enough in her nagging to ensure they would do her bidding.

Wolf
Male | 20 | Straggler
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Looking over the golden fea in front of him, Wolf couldn't really help admiring her features. Each and ever one of the creatures that followed Resinalpha were unique, and just as each had their own name, so each had their own face and shape. This one was golden, like the sky at dawn, her light colored eyes were bright and clear like tiny fair clouds passing over her sunrise. Soft amber-tipped ears swiveled this way and that on top of her head as she thought, betraying the inner workings of her mind. Wolf couldn't help but wonder if he did the same thing when he thought. Did his own ears stand at attention when he thought? Did they strain to listen to his own words when he spoke to himself?

This train of thought quickly brought on another realization, and one that Wolf had not taken the time to consider until just then: he really had only the slightest idea of what he looked like. Even in spring, there was not much standing water, and in the forest there was no ice polished by ocean waves in which he could gaze at himself. He was suddenly curious as to what color his eyes were. Xani and Resinalpha both had eyes of a golden color. Was that what made them so strong?

Suddenly Wolf realized that she was talking to him, and he realized he had missed most of what she had said, only coming back to himself as she was saying something about where she came from. Feeling like an idiot for getting lost in his own thoughts when there was finally someone else to talk to, Wolf chastised himself inwardly and smiled a bit sheepishly, nodding in an attempt to get her to continue and hoping that she wouldn't notice that he hadn't heard her.

By some small miracle, it seemed to work, and the golden fea continued, asking him a question. "Hey, by the way if you don't mind me asking - is your name actually 'Wolf?'"

The question in itself was confusing, and he tilted his head to the left, looking at her for a moment as though she had spoken to him in some other language. Wolf had only the the barest idea of what a name really was, and he wasn't sure why she should ask him. After all, everything had names. The needled trees were named pines, the small furry animals the scurried into the grass were called mice. The bigger ones were rabbits, and the tall ones with the antlers were reindeer. Therefore, he had just assumed he name must be wolf, as for some reason his mind told him that was his name.

However, looking at her, and thinking about Xani and Resinalpha, he began to doubt himself. Was it really his name? Or was that just a figment of his imagination? And if he was wolf, what were they? They couldn't all be different creatures, could they?

Catching himself falling back into the trap of introspection, and realizing that she is expecting an answer, Wolf shakes himself from his thoughts and shrugs. "Well, so far as I know anyway… What about you? What's your name?" he asked, trying to deflect the conversation into something else. Hopefully something that he would have the answer to.

Before more could be said though, some amount of commotion behind them caught his attention, and he looked up to see the loud white one coming towards them. Flinching inwardly, he braced himself for whatever sort of onslaught she might throw. However, instead of the yapping he was used to, she looked at them both seriously and set down the mouthful of food she had to speak. "Pilot, and whoever you are, I know the two of you haven't been in the pack long, but I'd appreciate it if you'd go visit the Keeper with us. Don't stay long, and bring him a little gift if you'd like. Just be sure to say something nice…" she said, trailing off as she became distracted by the others around her. Quickly she picked up her meat and motioned for a young fea and a tired looking hunter to follow, and set off at a sharp pace towards the trees.

Now, even more confused than before, Wolf looked back to Pilot with his ears tilted at an uncertain angle. "Uh… What do you think? Should we go?" he asked, clearly looking to Pilot for guidance. He wasn't sure who or what a Keeper was, and what, exactly, he was supposed to do, but if it meant fitting in, he was eager to please.

Lani
Female | 57 | Hunter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Leaving the two newcomers to sort things out for themselves, Lani quickly picked up her gift and urged the others to follow. It had taken some time, but she had finally managed to get most of them up and moving and wasn't about to loose that momentum trying to talk sense into half-witted stragglers.

Chewing as she walked, Lani easily followed the trail left by Attican's big paws, soon catching sight of his haggard form resting agains the trunk of a large tree. Resin was with him, and for once she was glad to see her Alpha, as it meant he hadn't been alone and this would be easier.

Walking up to him smartly, she placed the softened food in front of him and gave him a gentle lick on the top of the head, keeping clear of his injured face. "There you are! You had us all worried sick," she said, he voice holding no scolding, simply warmth and endearment. "You make sure you get some rest and heal up, ok Keeper? I still owe you a bath, and expect it to be repaid as soon as you're ready," she finished, and pressed her head into his shoulder for a short moment before turning to walk away.

On her way out, Lani passed the same young fea that had startled Attican at the kill earlier, and she gave her a nudge with her nose, urging her forward before disappearing back out through the trees. Looking a bit frightened, or at the very least unsure of herself, she too walked forward and lay down a bit of meat for him. "S-Sorry for startling you Keeper… We've all missed you… she stammered, looking at him with pleading eyes before looking away. Come back soon, okay? she finished, and she too walked away.

Behind her was the stalwart Vali, holding a tender piece of liver clasped between his wide jaws. One of his favorite parts, he gently laid it down in front of Attican and stood up, meeting the Keepers eyes for a long moment before nodding sharply then turning to leave.

In this way, many of the pack members came through to see Attican, each one leaving a small gift and a few kind words. All of them missed him, and more than a few pups asked him when they would hear another one of his stories before being shooed away by their parents. Standing just outside the screen of trees, Lani watched as they all came and went, making sure that each one took their turn and no one rushed in to surround him. After all, it was the least she could do. Soon enough she would go back to him, to curl by his side if he would have her. In the end, that was all she ever really wanted. Love him as she might, she knew they could never replace their lost mates, and all she wanted was companionship for her final years.
