Mercy listened to the Doctor speak with a grin on her face. As he spoke, his face lit up with a child-like joy, and Mercy couldn't help but beam herself. The joy that radiated around the Doctor at the moment filled her with joy of her own, and that was what the girl needed. Happiness.
As the Doctor played with the buttons and levers, Mercy grabbed hold of something, bracing herself for the tumbling and jolting that was sure to follow. Fortunately for her sanity, the TARDIS remained calm and relatively still, still enough for the Doctor to get up and give her a mallet-y thing. Mercy noticed the look in the Doctor's eyes, which amused her slightly. I'm nineteen years old, Doctor. I'm pretty sure I can handle this, thought Mercy, remaning quiet.
The glimmer in her eyes that revealed the eagerness that was running through her blood now also revealed a playfulness that was previously unlike her. "Ooh, I've got a little job-title-thing now? The fighter...I like that." Mercy was still sitting down, her soon-to-be brain basher in her hands, ready to be used when the time was right. "So...when're we going to get there?"
(This is a microscopic post. I'm ashamed of it. And that fancy post. It's crap. )
Excited/Anticipating
Exiting the TARDIS
The Doctor grinned at Mercy. "Well...we're there. Could you grab those cables for me?" He asked her, motioning to a set of cables hanging on the railing of the TARDIS. He picked up the oversized wires that he now knew could kill a Cyberman with one charge, slung them over his shoulder, and pushed open the TARDIS door with excitement, almost bouncing on the balls of his feet as he looked around and noticed where they'd landed. The HQ was an old building that used to be a factory for various boat parts, but now it was abandoned, and a perfect place for Cybermen to hide. They seemed to have landed in a production facility, an unused one. "Look at this! The TARDIS got us right where we needed to be. Didn't you, old girl?" He patted the side of the TARDIS as he looked around the room. It was huge, and very boring and grey. It needed some color, and he realized the TARDIS would be easily noticed against the pure drab grey of the walls, but it appeared that no one would be looking. A few rooms over, his enhanced Time Lord hearing picked up on the stomping of metal boots.
"I can hear Cybermen two or three rooms over. Be careful," he spoke back into the TARDIS, where Mercy hadn't exited yet. "Come on! It's safe out here." He motioned with his left hand for her to come out, his right holding onto a railing as he looked down onto the room below him. It was a good place to have landed, he thought-on a little balcony that had probably been used by the production managers in the older days. He wondered absentmindedly if the Cybermen had planned on converting the Ergen citizens and controlling the planet, or if they simply wanted the advanced technology of Ergen VIII, or the Ergen Aquatic species. They had highly advanced production machines here, and that was probably what the Cybermen were after. They wouldn't be expecting an attack, though, which was good. The Doctor and Mercy had the element of surprise.
The brown-haired Time Lord headed towards the staircase down, motioning for Mercy to follow. "We're gonna have to find the main room. It shouldn't be too far from here, the control room, but we'll have to be careful, because there will definitely be a few-at least a few-Cybermen on the way there. And knowing them, they've probably got some crazy, oversized Cyber-Leader or something. They usually do, from my experience."
"Oi, calm down, will you," said Mercy, walking out of the TARDIS with the cables in one hand and her mallet in the other. "You're like a child on Christmas morning, I sware. Get excited after we kill the Cyberman, please." Mercy sounded genuinely annoyed, except for the smile on her face that showed she was just as excited as the Time Lord who she befriended.
Mercy examined the dull grey room, so different from her sparkling crystal blue eyes. With a shudder, a memory of "Saint Kristoff's" miserable orphanage and its cold, grey interior that resembled the facility they were now in so closely. Now, nightmarish memories of the orphanage filled her mind. She could remember the fear and anxiety that she felt so often in the orphanage as clear as day. How could she forget? How could she forget the bitter cold that filled the faded brick building, and the blistering heat that came during the summer? How could the teasing that befell her, even though she was no different from anyone else in the orphanage, slip through her mind? And how could Mercy possibly forget Miss Pepper, the sharp tongued caretaker of the orphans, who's paddle had a sharper sting, if that was even possible?
Clunk, clunk, clunk.
Mercy's gaze was fixed on the silvery shell of the approaching Cyberman. Her grip tightened on her mallet, her knuckles turning white. She threw the cables to the Doctor with a single phrase.
"Stay back."
Both hands were on the handle of Mercy's makeshift brain basher as she snuck behind the Cyberman, who was still looking the other way. Mercy hit her target square in the head, backing up as its knees buckled and he toppled over with a crash. Mercy turned to look at the Doctor, grinning.
"Did you see that? Right in the head! I-"
The smile on Mercy's face faded as a loud clunking came from behind her. There was Cyberman behind her, about to touch Mercy's shoulder. Mercy sighed softly, her grip loosening. She remained calm, save for the glimmer of fear in her eyes. It's behind me, isn't it? Alright, don't worry about me, Doctor. I'll won't die, if I can help it. You can save me after you save the planet and kill off the Cybermen, I won't mind. Just race the Cybermen, and make sure you win. Okay, that's a lie. I'm terrified. Any tips on saving myself, she thought to him. Of course, she was terrified that the Cybermen would kill her, but saving her wasn't nearly as important as saving a whole race. Mercy studied the Doctor for any fear or concern, but she honestly couldn't tell at this point.
The Doctor would have yelled for Mercy to stop what she was doing, to think rationally, but as she knocked the Cyberman right over, likely killing it, he simply grinned. "I did see. Nice one-" He stopped speaking, his attention diverted to the Cyberman that stood right behind Mercy. In seconds, he got her telepathic message-which was still badly sent, but he could worry about technique later-and he had to do something. Fear sparkled in his eyes as his brain raced, trying to think of something, anything to do.
The Doctor was very good at running. Anyone who spent a lot of time running around with him-or even a short amount of time, really-would know that quite well. Running was just something he was good at, along with quick thinking. So that's just what he did.
"Oi, you big metal dunce! Look over here!" He shouted, banging on the wall to get the Cyberman's attention, distracting it for just a precious few moments from Mercy as it looked around to see what was making the strange noise. Thinking quickly, he pulled a switch on the wall, something that looked like a modern crane-attached magnet descending from the ceiling. A few seconds, and the Cyberman suddenly shot up like a bottle rocket being launched, smashing into the incredibly powerful magnet and crumpling slightly under the pressure as another ascended a few centimeters from the floor, keeping it trapped in a loop of repelling magnet forces as it smashed into both sides, crushing it slowly.
As the magnets destroyed the Cyberman, the Doctor flicked the switch on the wall again.
"You're lucky that was there, Mercy. And don't you say you would have been fine. I've seen Cybermen before. They touch you, they electrocute you, and you DIE. There is no way I'm risking your life. You've just come with me. You don't deserve that. Plus, I'm a quick thinker." He grinned, striding over to Mercy and pulling her into a tight, quick hug before looking around the room.
"That magnet was quite convenient, dontcha think? I wonder what would happen if we shoved a WHOLE BUNCH of them into one...perhaps we could lure them in here. New plans everywhere, huh? What do you think, Mercy?"
