You get them just like other items in battles. Like If you are fighting a Luna Moth there is a chance taht after battle it'll appear in the Loot window. They are Rather Rare though.
Some Familiars are also only sold in the Gem marketplace or found in gathering areas.

The bestiary is a list of all familiars basically. So yes you can own them. :) You can attach them to your dragons and if you click them every day you'll get a small amount of treasure and they level up over time. Each time they gain a level you get a chest (rusted, iron, or gilded depending on the level) and the treasure payout each click increases by 5.

My advice, Never expect a familiar and always get excited when you do find one. Despite my near constant coli grinding for months I've found maybe a handful. One of them was a yeti though so I hit the jackpot. Makes up for all the crap extra's tenfold.
