He reached inside his pocket and pulled out the bulb that was supposed to be the porch light outside. Then, Ms. Peacock grabbed his hand and almost made him flop over himself as she dragged him outside. It was pitch black out, and he couldn't handle all of this darkness. The black light was faint, it had been used before at Rowan's home and needed to be changed anyways. He felt his way to the porch light and unscrewed it, feeling around until he screwed in the regular light. It almost blinded him and he squinted, rubbing his eyes for a few minutes. Rowan pulled out his phone to look at his reflection. His hair was as stiff as a board, still all styled up and spiked. Anne laughed, shrugging. She threw open the door and pranced back into the house, slamming the door behind her as she continued to party on without the two. When Rowan looked back to see what Ms. Peacock looked like without all the glow, she was, actually, really nice looking. She had on really cool looking leggings that were white with little feather patterns on them; blues, greens, browns, the colors that didn't glow in the black light. Then a neon green tee-shirt, with feathery patterns printed on as well as texture. Just like the leggings, there were the blues, browns, and greens that didn't glow. Then he looked up at her face that was covered in a blue-green, almost teal, mask with little feathers that would drive Rowan insane if he were to wear them. He could hardly stand the mask he was already wearing. He itched his eyebrow, not flinching to pluck the feathers off with the itching motion.
He could see a faint lipstick that was glided onto her lips; it was green as well. Then he glanced down at her feet, they were covered with a green type of shoe, but really bright. Those simple shoes tied the entire outfit together, from the fancy and wild consume that was riled down with simple, plain sneakers. She looked so nervous, chewing on her lip and barely making eye contact. He chuckled. That was exactly how he was, and he kinda felt sorry for the girl, and himself as well. Why waste a good party? Why waste your first party? Yes, this was the first party Rowan had ever been to. Most likely like all the rest of the homeschoolers. That's probably why his soccer friend had planned one in the first place, to break everyone out of their shell and to meet new people. And to be honest, Rowan didn't realize how many teens were in that homeschooling group. He only ever paid attention to a few of them. There had to be.. what? Twenty-thirty kids inside that house? Actually, he thought about it. That's a big house.
After a few minutes in thought, he focused back on Ms. Peacock. Well.. Ms. Aaliyah. "Ooo, pretty name. Well, Ms. Aaliyah, I am.." He wondered if he should reveal his name. Why ruin the fun? Make it a mystery and have her try to figure out who this Mr. Blacklight is on the next homeschool meeting. Ahh, yes. He remembered her. They were in the same English class. He never really paid attention to her much, she was as shy as he was. She had been called on a few times, being forced to talk in front of the class, that was really the only time he had ever looked at her. In fact, he didn't even remember what she'd looked like.. "I-I am M-Mr. B-Blacklight.." He let out a nervous laugh. How could she not know who he was? Well.. she had never been around him.. or ever heard his voice before at the meetings.. so.. yeah.
Rowan shrugged, and simply said "L-Let's k-keep it a mystery, s-shall we?" He sounded like a stuttering fool, and stuffed his hands in his pockets. His eyes were a lovely light brown, and he blushed when he looked into those stunning bright blue eyes of hers. He tilted his head slightly, just to see those pure, dashing blues. Rowan sighed, and confessed that he thought her eyes were gorgeous. Never did he really look into somebody's eyes before, but really, how could you miss her's? He wanted to hide himself behind his sister or something, maybe a tree. He was almost temped to jump off of the wooden porch and down onto the ground just to escape from this awkward encounter.

mr. blacklight? so he was keeping his identity a mystery. great. "thanks... mr. blacklight." she smiled, eyes sparkling in the moonlight. she shrugged slightly, trying not to stare at him. from what she could see, which wasn't much, he wasn't ugly, that was for sure. he had spiky hair, obviously gelled, but... it was strangely attractive. what was she thinking? she mentally slapped herself, sighing slightly. "uh... okay... but i really would like to know your name." she spoke quietly, smiling weakly now. she felt incredibly awkward, and had no idea what to say. what should she say? say something! "uh... do you want to go... uh.." she stammered, unsure of what to do now. she wanted to get away from the party, but going anywhere alone would suggest a date. "uh we could go to dairy queen or something, get some ice cream?" she blurted out, blushing deeply, laughing nervously. what the heck was wrong with her?! she had just asked him for ice cream! gah! she hoped he didn't take it the wrong way. "i mean, just for fun of course... you don't have to or anything.." she mumbled awkwardly afterwards.
she smiled nervously, crossing her arms. "uhhh sorry if..uh i made you uncomfortable." she muttered again, blushing deeply. what on earth was with her tonight? she was acting the exact opposite of the way she always did. she was a shy introvert, end of story. but here she was pushing herself out there and asking some guy to dairy queen! she sighed slightly, trying to not overthink this. maybe he didn't take it that way. maybe he was nice, but he seemed just as shy as she was. but she didn' tknow. she didn't even know his name! she mentally facepalmed, sighing again.
she felt tired, yet extremely hyperactive at the same time. the hysteria, music, and caffeine all made her just about to jump off the walls. she was surprised she hadn't puked yet. or passed out. in fact, she was on the verge of the latter. she felt dizzy, but not enough to fall over. not yet. if he accepted the invitation to dairy queen, she just might faint. she hadn't gone on a 'date' since her last boyfriend. the major playboy jerk. she tried not to think about it. she smiled again weakly, more faintly now. she should just run. now. but her feet weren't coordinating with her mind, and she was stuck firmly planted on the spot. yay. she kicked the ground with the toe of her shoe, trying to figure out if she should say something to fill the awkward silence or not.

"Jeesh. We're stuttering." Finally, maybe he could break the awful silence that was fluctuating between them. He sighed, about to just start wacking his head against the home. Thanks, Cap. Obvious for making everything even more awkward. Great, that could've been an insult to Ms. Pea- Aayilah-. Wonderful. Might as well must call me Mr. Wonderful as I starts yelling in your face in pure, awkward agony. Yup. He is going insane. He tried to shake it off, but his stomach was churning and adrenalin was rushing through his veins, making a faint buzzing feeling throughout his body. He rubbed his neck awkwardly.
Aaliyah asked him if they could go for some icecream. Good. That'll be fine. People will be around, adults, a few other teens, children. Good. That would be great. Dairy Queen is like the pit stop for breaking the ice. You can yourself there.. yet Rowan couldn't even be himself at a masked party where nobody knows who you are. Jeesh. "That would be great!" He exclaimed, mentally exhaling as he relaxed. He was truly waiting for one of them to make a suggestion like that. But honestly, Aaliyah looked rather sickly stressed. When he touched her mask it was like she tensed up even worse, so no way was he going to touch her shoulder in an effort to calm her down.
He looked at her again, his shoulders slightly more relaxed. "You're tense, there isn't a need to be." But in reality, he was as nervous as she was and as shy. "I'll get my sister." Rowan went up the three steps and slipped inside, fumbling around to get used to the darkness. He closed his eyes, then opened them, no longer seeing spots of yellow and green and red, now just seeing shirts and glowing teeth everywhere. His sister was dancing with a guy in glowing white tennis shoes, and he figure he had been wearing all black. His teeth had been glowing, but little spots of blue were wear his braces were. Anneleise's smile was the same, but there were pink little specks on her teeth instead of blue. Rowan didn't have braces, his parents didn't have the money right now, which didn't bother him much. His teeth were fine, they didn't need to get him braces anyways.
He flung himself over and swept Anne literally off her feet, and Rowan marched over to the door and asked someone to open it. A red glowing monster opened it and he stumbled out, softly chuckling. "Let me down, Prince Charming!" Anne laughed, kicking lightly and flailing her arms everywhere. "Easy, girl," Rowan warned jokingly, just barely having the strength to hold her over the edge of the porch, Anne now three feet off the ground. Her laughing became louder before she realized she was part-airborne, and suddenly turned from giggles to panic. "Get me down, get me down, get me down!!" She begged, and Rowan contemplated if he should dropped her a few inches and catch her again just to give her a scare. He shook his head, lifting her up and over the wood, then plopped her back onto her feet.
Stretching, he popped his back. "Idiot." Anne growled, pushing him lightly, Rowan's hand now squishing her face. Before he exploded in a fit of laughter, he quickly removed his hand and ducked to avoid Anne's swinging hand at his face. He turned to Aaliyah. "It's not my choice." Shrugging, he opened the door to his car for them to get inside. He pulled forward his seat and his sister pouted, climbing into the back. "Don't worry, you'll get plenty of air back here." He snorted, pushing his seat back in place. He walked over to the other side and held open the door for Ms. Aaliyah.

aaliyah grinned shyly. "i'm not so great around people, in case you haven't noticed." she blushed again as he accepted the invitation. "great!" she spoke enthusiastically. it would be great. she smiled, feeling better now. she blushed again when his fingers touched her mask, and she smiled shyly. "i'm tense because i'm not good around other people." then he darted inside for his sister. oh great. not like she didn't like other people, but his sister was way to... energetic for her. she smiled slightly when he came out with his sister in his arms, basically dumping her in the back of his car. then he opened the passenger door and left it open for her. "thank you." she spoke quietly, smiling as she got into the car. she glanced back at his sister, but put her out of mind for now. she looked out the window with a slight smile, blushing again.
why was she so nervous round him? "so... mr backlight, are you going to tell me your name?" she asked quietly, turning to look at him with a grin. "so... uh... nice car." she spoke quietly. it really was, the color was nice and it was pretty sporty. she wished she actually had a car. but her motorcycle was really nice, and she loved it. she wouldn't have it any other day. she shrugged slightly to herself and yawned, feeling a bit tired. she was excited to be going for ice cream with someone, even if it was a guy. there would be people there, and his sister was with them. she hoped things went well tonight.
she just felt so nervous... well she knew why. guys made her incredibly... antsy. why couldn't she be more outgoing? like her brother? but... no. she was a shy little introvert and nothing she did ever changed that. she tried so hard to be more outgoing, but she always stumbled over her words and could never speak a full sentence without stuttering. she always tried so hard, but she couldn't change. she sighed, crossing her arms to warm herself.

He sighed. As they loaded into the car, Rowan answered quickly. "You really think I've been gasping for air this entire time from talking too little?" He asked, a light sarcasm accent on the tip of his tongue. The radio of the car lit up. It wasn't big, or even modern in the most tiniest of ways. It was only a little knob for the volume, one for the channel, a tape slot and a slot for CDs. At least it showed how much volume it had and the channel number with a little LED light. It wasn't special.. but it worked. He could hook up his MP3 player at least. "Thanks. It's a 1980 Ford." He cranked up the heat, it was nice out but chilly with the wind beating on their faces. That was the downside to this car; it had nothing to cover their heads if it was cold. He never drove it if it was raining or snowing, that would just be suicide. He was content with staying at home or borrowing his mother's car if needed. He also gave her a hair clip that his sister had thrown to him. "I'd recommended you pin your hair back, it'll get pretty wild." He pointed to his sister's head, it all wild and frizzed a little. "Example."
Ms. Aaliyah asked if he was going to give her his name. He shook his head, a sly grin across his lips, exposing a dimple on his right cheek. "But.." He hesitated to slide off his mask. He stopped. "My middle name is Dill. Call me Dill or.." He thought for a moment to convert Rowan with Dill. "Dillan. Your choice." He almost started to stutter, but really, he just wanted to stay quiet. He sighed, turned the key and listened as the engine roared to life. Well.. it didn't roar, but he imagined it did. He put it in reverse and looked behind him, the occasional shift of his body to look in the other direction. Once they were out of the driveway, Rowan jammed it into drive and they cruised down the road. Just barely ten miles per hour, they were simply.. cruising. It was nighttime, and the few street lights made it relaxing. He could faintly hear the music from the house fade away as they went down the street. The chirping of the crickets and the hooting of a nearby owl made it nice, and the cool air made it more relaxing. When they had to turn into an intersection and get onto the main road, he turned on the radio. It was automatically set on a Christian channel, and he was recently listening to tobyMac, and it flashed to a tobyMac channel. It was smart that way. But what was funny was that it occasionally reared off TM and onto Skillet. One minute it was slightly loud and wild, the next a hardcore guitar and a lot of yelling.
Rowan turned it down, so that you could hear it but it not be too loud. Anne was quietly singing along in the back seat, but you could barely hear her over the wind in your ears. "It's better if you stay close to the center of the car. You won't get as much of the wind!" He yelled, leaning towards the middle of the car, lining up with the radio. The heat from the air vents warmed them enough to where they weren't too cold. In the winter he wouldn't be able to drive, his nose wouldn't all frozen and his lips blue. His eyebrows would have icicles for goodness sakes. Finally, they arrived at the DQ, and several other cars were parked in the lot. A few were in the drive-through. This wasn't surprising. It was always packed at night, especially before it closed. It was around 9 o'clock that night when they pulled in. His friend only lived twenty minutes from town, while he was half an hour or even forty minutes depending on traffic. He parked near the back, there was only a few parking places and all were in the back. Rowan got out, pulling up his seat and letting Anne crawl out, her hair all messed up and animal-like. He attempted to pat it down, running his fingers through her frizzed hair. It surrendered just a tad, and he didn't dare to fluff it up. Even he would feel the pain. He grinned, walking over to Ms. Aaliyah, and opened the shiny blue car door for her. "I wonder what they'll be thinking when we walk inside?"

aayliah blushed a bit, listening to him but saying nothing. she didn't know what to say. "it really is a nice car... i know it's strange, but... i've got a motorcycle." she spoke quietly, but loud enough to be heard. she graciously took the clip from 'mr blacklight' and clipped up her hair in a stylish updo. she smiled, the hair finally out of her face. dill. dillan. that was his middle name, okay. it was a start. 'alright... dillan. i hope i get to find out your real name as some point in time." she smiled slightly, and looked straight ahead as he drove. she would have leaned closer to the middle of the car to stay out of the wind, but he was there too, and she didn't want to be that physically close to someone, especially a guy.
she thought to herself, not paying much attention to her whereabouts until dill pulled up to the dairy queen. "well.. probably that we're on a date... but we know we're not. it's just for fun." she shrugged, she knew that, he knew that, hopefully his sister knew that. it didn't matter what anyone else thought. "shall we take our masks off?" she asked, smiling slightly. she would feel embarrassed enough going into a dairy queen with a guy, but wearing a bright and feathered mask? even more embarrassing. no no no. she smiled a bit, but didn't feel too... good. she felt nervous, too nervous.
she sighed, crossing her arms to keep warm. she got out of the car as he parked, pulling up the seat for his sister. she waited patiently outside the car for the two, not wanting to be rude and going inside without them. hopefully the rest of the evening wouldn't be too... awkward. or weird. or embarrassing. things would go all right. at least, she hoped so.

Rowan leaned back and popped his back, popped his neck and popped his fingers, groaning.
He was tense. Too tense. And he was really, really apprehensive. And twitchy. He noticed that he would
make faint, clinking moments with his hand at loud noises and just.. all the time. He always did this when
he was nervous, or just overly tired, and in that case his arms would be flailing around. He blushed, and
gave a small, right-sided grin, crossing his leg behind him and looking at the ground. His eyes wandered
to her outfit again, and contemplated on if he should take off his mask. Why not, right? He plucked the
father that was idly hanging off his shirt and stuffed it in his pocket, then unhurriedly started to slide off
the rigid mask. Finally, after a few, dramatic minutes, it was off. He looked in the window of his car,
and he fixed his hair. He whirled it upwards, the little streaks of light brown enhancing the effect of
the style. But actually this was his daily hairstyle. "You know... Aaliyah.. I have never rode a motorcycle.
My dad used to have one.. I'm terrified of them, honestly." His dimple was clearly there out in the lighting
of the beautiful, creamy, tasty Dairy Cream building.
He laughed, although it was really choppy and high pitched. He blushed again, his face getting redder as they stood there. He held his breath, walking up to the building and opening the door for Ms. Aayilah. As they walked in, the line was terribly long. Rowan smelled fresh French fries in the back and some burgers cooking, but he caught a glimpse of the ice-cream machine and his mouth watered. "Well, I guess we could break the
ice while waiting.." Even though he said that, he stayed silent and exchanged awkward glimpses to the guy in front of them. He looked like he was in his late teens, and Rowan scrunched up nearer to Aaliyah. He hated to talking to older people, it was just.. too awkward, and Rowan was way too shy. Most of the people in the room was staring at the two, between the bright colors and weird makeup. He blushed and slipped the mask back on, slipping Aaliyah's mask back on her to make the embarrassment easier to handle.
He coughed intentionally, and a few people backed away from them. Rowan may be quiet, but he has some tricks up his sleeve. He sneezed, and to his surprise, a family of five ducked underneath the rope and exited. "Boom." He wiggled his eyebrows to Ms. Aaliyah in a funny, maybe a play-flirting way. "You know, oddly, I prefer the nickname Mr. Blacklight." He laughed, pulling out one of the bulbs he had unscrewed from the porch
light. He contemplated on replacing the bathroom lights, but that would probably have him end up in jail and gross him out in general. All those weird and nasty stains on the walls and floors? Oh gosh. Rowan almost started gagging, though it was an odd sight when he randomly covered his mouth with the back of his hand. He gulped, dismissing the sad, gross thought. Wait, not yet. The toilet would be glowing. He bent over, slipping underneath the rope and over to the glass door, and sneezed once. Jeesh. This poor kid is naturally twitchy, geeky, and socially illiterate. Now he was thinking about glowing toilets and ends up gagging in the friendly Dairy Queen down the street, in front of the entire crowd.
Rowan stood there after he had situated himself, and looked around wide-eyed, frozen. The ice cream was supposed to be frozen, not him. Scotsmen don't freeze. At least, not Rowan. He's not one to freeze. Gag and run away, yes, but not freezing. His face became red, and he inched towards the glass door. The people werE probably thinking 'Um.. what's wrong with this kid?'. Just that thought made him crash into the door and flop out onto the floor, making him scramble to his feet and outside. He sniffed, rubbing his eyes. He always teared up when embarrassed. A red face was a clear sign of anger or humiliation, but tearing up was just girly. He hated it. But he couldn't help it, it was his body's reaction to, well, these kind of situations. And all of this was because of him going to that party. It was the party's fault. Now he had just lost the chance of a friendship with a being of the female species of humanity. He collapsed in his car, feeling lucky he was in the back, behind a large pickup truck. "Idiot, idiot! Du skal bare.." He sighed, wiping his angry tears away and unintentionally wacking his face against the steering wheel, about scaring the stuffing out of him as he honked the horn, making him fling his knee up and wack a nerve. By now he was squealing in pain, between his sore nose and throbbing knee.
