Has anyone ever written a book in second person? I've heard it's really hard, but I've done it before. Anyone else? :D

I haven't done it myself and I almost never see books like that, but I have read a few of the "Give Yourself Goosebumps" books, which are in second-person. ^^ Sometime I'd like to try writing that way, though, just to see what it's like. Right now, I almost always do first-person because the character I use to narrate I think of as myself. So if I used third-person (or second) for her, it's like talking about myself in third-person and that feels really weird.

Actually, I did write a draft for a novella written by-and-large in second person. It had a pretense of modern fantasy (akin to the Percy Jackson and the Harry Dresden novels), where fantasy tropes, races and monsters came alive. Where Wizards were, at best, mafioso-vampire-magicians and, at worst, street-gang Arcane junkies who use whatever they can find, enchant it, and use as weapons; with a sect of sub-human Wizards who protect the Human populace from the madness ravaging the inner cities. The only thing keeping said creatures within the cities, would both be barriers and Government-made blockades. The most powerful Wizards are in cahoots with the Government, and rule who comes in and goes out of the inner city.

Anyhow, the protagonist is a nameless (with just the moniker of 'Rookie', a unisex name) Human journalist who, while studying one of the town guards, a Sub-Human Wizard who goes by the name of 'Smokey', gets involved in the inner war.

That was my plan for a small series, with a split at book two or book three. But, I scrapped the idea of it being a novelization, and have since been storyboarding it to be one of my very first published comic book series; as a lot of my ideas for scenes are too scriptive or dynamic for text, and would only be a hindrance to the storytelling, I feel.

I have to write a poem for a scholarship, and I have absolutely no idea of what to have the subject be! Could you guys maybe give me a couple suggestions to help light a spark?

What exactly is the scholarship for/about? Creative writing/English or something more standard?

I guess it's more of a contest really, my mom keeps calling it a scholarship because the prize is $500 and I'm in the middle of applying for other scholarships. It's a poetry contest, you send in your poem and they pick the most creative poem to win. It's really not complicated, I just can't think of anything to do it about.

Hmm, I'd suggest something inspiring but I'm at a total loss at the moment of what that might be. Definitely something inspired by a strong emotion - to me that's kind of the essence of poetry.

For the actual writing, though, I'd suggest thinking of something - even if it might not fit the basis of your scholarship/contest - and work with it. And you're best friend is going to be http://www.rhymer.com/ (ie: what rhymes with _______?) I use a similar website almost every time I write a poem xD

If you're still having trouble I'd suggest googling possibilities; most times they'll have some pretty good ideas.

Here are a few ideas off the top of my head:

  • Describe an important event in your life, either something that's already happened/happening or something in the future
  • Describe an interesting dream you had
  • Find an everyday object and try to explain what it is without actually naming it (or put the name at the end but make your readers guess first)
  • Personify an abstract idea (freedom, power, human nature, death, etc.)

You can say about environmental friendly. About what did people do and you can name Earth as our mother.

You can say about: people saw their mother's life is at stake, but they don't care about her. And they continued destroy our mother.... Etc.
