Welcome to the college town of Marina. Located in North Carolina ten miles inland from the Atlantic, it’s known for the plethora of universities and secondary schools that it is host to. Our focus, however, is only on two of these; or more specifically, the age-old rivalry between them. Facing each other on opposite banks of the Douglas River, the aptly named Riverside All-Boys and Riverside All-Girls boarding schools were founded by the same man in 1986— a man that, it seems, possessed a lot of money if not a lot of common sense. Oh, it’s a picturesque sight for sure: two beautiful Gothic-style buildings that mirror each other perfectly, connected only by the single bridge that spans the Douglas. About a mile downstream, that stream deposits into Douglas Lake, which is ringed by restaurants, cafes, stores, and bars— oh right, and a beach, of course. So yes, a very, very pretty place to receive your grade 9-12 education.
Not so pretty are the devious plans that the boys and girls come up with to sabotage each other. See, a river isn’t the only thing they share; rivals in sports, math/science teams, orchestras/bands, you name it, these kids like to come out on top at whatever the cost. Because while the bridge is always under watch, all it takes is a brief swim across the river in the cover of darkness, for those who dare. And very many do, in spite of the threat of suspension and — should you get caught more than once — expulsion.
That’s where you come in. Now a senior, the last step before making the leap to college, you’re going to make your fourth and final year one to remember. Whether you were born to break rules or whether you’ve only just begun to consider walking on the wild side, it’s time to start living. For some, this means going out on a Friday night and staying up after midnight laughing with your friends at a café, breaking curfew. For others, this means climbing onto the roofs and sleeping under the stars. Maybe this means trying to make your name one for the record books of Riverside Academy. And maybe, just maybe, this means crossing that river and getting your first taste of the forbidden.
