Espy woke up in a panic and looked around the room. She didn't remember going back to sleep but she felt disoriented and scared, however, she couldn't even remember the dream, or nightmare, that caused her to feel like her chest was being crushed and put her in a cold sweat. She got up, folded her blanket and strode lightly to the kitchen. She saw Tabitha and Stasi sitting there eating and talking quietly.
"Morning." She said grumpily. "Please, nothing before coffee." She waved them off before they could talk to her. She hated to be rude like that but in her mood she knew it was for the best. Whenever she had nightmares and woke up like this it put her in a foul mood in the morning. She needed time to clear her brain and get out of the funk she was in. She started the coffee maker since neither of them had, apparently not fans of caffeine in the morning or something. She couldn't function without it. She waited for it to finish and then poured herself a mug and put in milk and sugar. She went back to the sofa and drank her coffee in silence until she felt awake and less out of sorts, and then returned to the kitchen. "Sorry about that, I don't do mornings. Especially when I don't sleep well." She grabbed a muffin and a banana and ate quietly, still mulling over the dream she couldn't remember anything but snippets of...something about a loud noise and darkness, and a burning sensation. She was terrified, but couldn't really understand what it was or what it meant.
Sherry awoke with a start at the quiet click of the back door of the van. She watched as the girl they had taken in the night before quietly sneaked away and raised her seat back. Turning around she eyed Andrew, snoring like a bear and wrapped around his pillow like a teddy bear. Larry was still sleeping and she didn't want to disturb him so she reached under her seat and pulled out her thermos. She poured the last cup of coffee from it and debated with herself if she should wake Larry and follow the girl. She nudged him awake. "Good morning. Did you sleep okay? I think Caroline is feeling a little restless." Larry followed her gaze and watched as the girl left the camp. "I'm not going to force her Sherry. I know what you're thinking and I understand the sentiment. She's young, she's inexperienced, but she's made it this far without us, and who knows our paths may cross again anyway. All of this turmoil in the resistance is going to come to a head soon anyway. I just pray she comes down on the right side of things. The temptation will be very high for her to go back." He watched as she slipped back into the trees, and sat up. Opening his car door, he stood and watched her until he could no longer see her anymore, then he began covering what was left of their small fire from the night before and folding up the camp chairs outside. Sherry came up beside him and broke down the camp stove. As they loaded everything into the van and left camp she turned to him, "Larry?" He winced at her tone, "I know I know. We risk a lot in letting her go, but I still think it's for the best. Caroline is a smart girl. Have faith." With that he turned back onto a remote wooded road that began to curve downhill. "We should be there in no time. The weather's good so we'll have less to contend with."
