With all this discussion of literate RPing going on, I have a question.

Code: Select all

How would you define 'semi-lit' and 'literate'?

I know it's a matter of opinion, but I was curious to see what others would say.

How would you define 'semi-lit' and 'literate'?

In my opinion, semi-lit would be one to two decent sized paragraphs. I would consider literate to be 3+ good paragraphs.

Oh, and I am making a literate fantasy rp centered in the future. But since they have a time-machine, the time zone would vary. Is anybody interested?

style is huge for me also. I don't put much thought at all into the style of my own posts, maybe I should, but I invariably notice it in others, good or bad. Everyone just has their own way of phrasing and whatnot, and there's only been a few times that I've actually ever disliked someone's style, since most of the time I can appreciate it for what it is.

I consider semi-lit and literate to have more distinct differences than just post length. I also like to think that literate roleplayers not only know the language and how to use it, but what the effects of their language are. It's not hard to belt out two descriptive paragraphs without much error; it's much harder to create a specific tone, atmosphere, and purpose in your post, and have your figures of speech, diction, and syntax all work towards fulfilling that purpose or tone.

I guess, in my opinion, it's a question of knowledge versus mastery.

As far as length goes, one to two paragraphs would be semi-lit, and 2+ would be lit, in my opinion. Notice I didn't specify how many sentences or lines--I think paragraphs can and should vary from situation to situation. There's no need for a fourteen sentence paragraph when you're doing greetings; likewise, describing a situation or a fight generally can't be done with five short sentences.

thank you
so many people just ignore style and character development and plot development and consistency and just look at grammar and technical stuff and call it literate
..nopenope

btw I found this website
http://www.grammarly.com/
probably not going to help everyone but I thought it might be nice to have for some people who worry over their sentence structure and grammar. i haven't checked it out for accuracy and all that but it looked really helpful, and its creative writing to school papers too. I do believe you have to make an account but I don't think you have to pay
