After asking around to make sure he was a stray, we finally ended up keeping the dog! We named him Bandit. Sam really enjoys his company and they are getting along well! They play together a lot, and we've taken them down to the creek (about 3/4 mile away form our house) a few times.

I've lived in the country all my life, except for the few years off and on overseas and these last couple years in the city. DX I miss the woods and fields! And I know Dixie would LOVE romping off-leash [she has great recall...as long as it's me calling her. Gotta work on that.].
I'm glad for Goldy! ^u^ And that she likes Barney Boy.

Did you have a vet check him for a chip? And, does your town/city have a Lost Pets page on Facebook? I had no idea we did until last year. We picked up a Golden running loose, because we were afraid he'd get hit. (It was raining hard and he was trying to cross a busy road.) While I was watching back at the house, my Dad went and asked a couple of people around there and left his pone number in case they heard anything. A lady finally found where his owner had posted a notice on __________'s Lost Pets on Facebook. ^^
I still have a pic of him here actually.

I'm not quite sure what you mean by a chip. But we did take him to the vet yesterday to get him checked out and to get him neutered. He has to wear a cone around his head so he won't lick at the stitches. He doesn't like it too much and keeps bumping into things. :P
As for the Facebook page, I don't think so. We have an animal shelter about 20-25 miles from us (because we live out in the country) and we reported him there incase anyone had asked about their missing dog. We also asked our neighbors if they owned him. All of them said no.
He had been wandering around for about 2 or 3 weeks. We're guessing someone dumped him here, assuming someone would pick him up.

I meant microchip, sorry! XD A vet or shelter should have one or more scanners to be able to see if he has a chip. c: If you hadn't already done this too, you could check the lost/found ads on your local and surrounding area on Craigslist starting several weeks before folks started seeing him. (Also, there's a lost/found section and pets section up in the top left corner. You can find lost ads in both of those. ^^) You might try the next nearest state too. c: I helped a couple locate their GSD who came from across the state border and ended up approx 75 miles away from home. And we recently had a Saluki mix here at animal control who was transferred to a rescue- after he was transferred, we found a lost ad in TN completely by accident that matched his description. He was a recent rescue adopted by a couple in middle TN. Imagine! Travelling across nearly two states! We put them in contact with the rescue that pulled him, and they were reunited. ^^
Aw poor fella! Dixie surprised me when I got her spayed. I was expecting her to be a disaster to keep settled during the time she was healing.
He's such a sweet looking guy. :c But I can see that happening, unfortunately. >_< There's a certain place in one of the country areas here too where dogs are commonly dumped. :c

On a slightly related note, how many of you have your dog(s)' microchipped? I'm still debating whether or not I want to get Dixie chipped, considering the chance of cancer and/or tumors I read about. Anybody heard of a chip causing cancer?? I haven't gone much into the research yet.

Hm...I don't think Id ever do that. Sierra always comes right back home and I don't see a need for that. She had a hip surgery when she was a puppy, so if she got cancer or a tumor, she'd be pretty sensitive. And she's only four :( . But, she's a good girl, so personally I don't think a microchip is necessary, with her collar and all. I just...technology in my puppy's head?

Gr, Sierra found a toy on the side of the road when I went out to get the mail, snuck it into the backyard, and chewed it in half. I don't know what it originally was...
eyyy everything is actually alright don't worry ok <3

My dogs are extremely well-behaved,
have great recall, and are all spayed/neutered,
but I still got them microchipped ;) My Golden is almost
16, and I just recently got her microchipped.

And the microchip isn't in their head, it's more
in their shoulder. It's about the size of a grain
of rice; 1 2
According to the American Veterinary Medical Association,
“Considering how a large number of pets have been implanted
with microchips with a relatively small number of confirmed cases
of tumors associated with microchips, the AVMA advises against a
rush to judgment on the technology.”

I would suggest getting a microchip just to be on the safe side.
A collar isn't always good enough, especially of your dog gets
stolen. It's always good to have extra precautions with your
canine companions. :)

True. Maybe when she's older, I just....I don't know, we live in a small, gated community with a lot of security, soI just don't really see a need for one right now. Sierra hates surgeries and I couldn't bear to have her in pain again so soon. But that's just my personal life. :P

On another note, does anyone know when goldens were first bred?

@JoeKerr, Thanks for that! And yes, that's what I was thinking - collars can come off, but it's unlikely someone is going to try to remove a microchip. c; We've also had another rash of stolen dogs in the surrounding area. I'll have to discuss it with my parents and the vet when Dix goes in for her shots on Wednesday.

@Pengy (can I call you Pengy? :3), yep the chip goes between their shoulder blades. ^^ It's also done very quickly (only takes a second) and the chip is injected - no surgery or anesthetic necessary! ^^ It might be sore for a day or two but that's it.

And I'm glad you asked that! Now I can rattle off the history of my favorite breed. ;D They orignated in Scotland in the late 1800s and were developed and bred by Lord Tweedmouth on his estate. (Actually I can't rattle it off because I'm about to leave now >_<) So here are some link:

Oh! Cool! I love that name...
Like I said, maybe when she's older. I'd have to do more research. :) Does it cost a lot?

Hi there :)
Do you own any Golden(s)? - Yep! One and a half
If so, what is his/her name and gender? - Tsuki's my three year old purebred baby girl, Kodie's 16 and she's half lab.
How and where did you get your Golden? - Tsuki came from a breeder who was breeding her two goldens to get a new agility dog. I got to meet both parents and got copies of their complete health certificates. I found the breeder on line.
Kodie came to us after her owner had to move across the country for her job and couldn't take her along.
Do you compete in any sports or participate in any special activities? - Tsuki and I do 4H together, we're grand champions in the state for our level in obedience. We also do confirmation/junior showmanship, rally-O, and agility. Kodie sleeps at home
