Chapter 7
Ra’m stayed at the back of the group to keep everyone inside the protected zone, she noticed that there were so many children and they all wanted to run around even though they knew they weren’t supposed to.
Many people strayed most of them were old and tired, others were young children excited and jumpy.
They came to the edge of the Hádar Forest. Many of the children tightly clenched their mother’s dresses. They were afraid for they had heard the stories of dangers and voices in the dark.
Ra’m had heard of the stories as well, but now she thought they were just stories parents told children so they wouldn’t run into the forest. She began to walk into it when Hochiesa put his hand on her shoulder. Just as Ra’m looked back to ask Hochiesa why he had stopped her from going in, a screeching sound rose up over the chatter of the frightened people.
Ra’m held her ears tightly and fell to the ground. Looking up she saw a dark bird-like figure rise from the trees. She noticed many of it’s feathers had been replaced by raven black scales. It looked at her briefly, but not before Ra’m saw its gnarled face and forlorn eyes. As it flew away she let her hands drop down and she felt pity for the creature, yet she feared it all the same.
As it disappeared the children began to wail and the women held them close trying to hush them. Ra’m walked to the children telling them that everything would be alright and that there was nothing to fear.
“What was that?” Ra’m asked Hochiesa her heart still racing.
Hochiesa stood up all the color in his face had left him. This was far more fear Ra’m had seen him shown since the Dwarven raid on the shining town.
“A Ronám, they live in the darkness of the forests. You can find them virtually anywhere but I’ve only seen paintings of them”, Hochiesa said seeming to calm down, “Pitiful looking creatures, aren’t they?”
“Yes... it seemed hurt by our presence itself.”
“We probably awoke it from a nap”, a young boy said shakily.
Hochiesa laughed. “Maybe so. Say you’re Thongii’s son aren’t you?”
The young boy nodded and looked at Hochiesa with a solemn look, “Are you going to save us?”
Hochiesa stopped smiling, looked at the boy and simply said, “I don’t know boy… I don’t know.”
Ra’m looked at the boy. He had green eyes, black hair… and he wore a red shirt with gold floral embroidery. She then instantly took her hunting knife and stabbed the boy in the heart.
“WHAT ARE YOU DOING?!” Hochiesa yelled as he watched the boy fall over.
“He’s not who you think he is”, Ra’m replied as the boy changed into a large, red, fox-like creature with long fangs and large claws, “See he’s a Toviitsa, we’re being watched.”
Hochiesa stood there and stared as the life was drained from the body, shocked that there was a spy, maybe more, “How did you know?” he asked slowly and carefully watching each side for attackers.
“His shirt was red silk with golden floral embroidery”, she replied not as cautious.
Hochiesa looked down starting to understand, “The colors of the Toviitsa, the Dwarves, they let us escape.”
“Exactly”, she said confidently, “We have to do something.”
“I agree, but what? We have no way around the forest and once we’re in Hádar we can’t separate otherwise we run the risk of having more people die.”
“Yes but if we separated beforehand, telling them we’re looking for ways around the forest, maybe that would be enough to draw them out.”
“I see where you’re going here, so we separate to trick the Toviitsa into thinking that we have become vulnerable. Maybe we should pretend to fight, it would make it more believable.”
Ra’m nodded, seeing how that would be believable, “DON’T YOU DARE UNDERMINE MY AUTHORITY?!”
Hochiesa staggered back then realized what she was doing, “WHAT AUTHORITY? I THOUGHT YOU WOULD ACCEPT MY ADVICE, but now I see you’re too stubborn to.”
“Why you little”, Ra’m said pretending to be annoyed.
“Little? Well I’m sorry to inform you again, I’m older and taller than you.”
They continued like this for two hours before finally splitting up, Ra’m and Hochiesa each taking about half of the group with them.
Ra’m smirked as she scanned the group finding several smug faces as they left Hochies and the others behind. She knew it would be dangerous if any one of them tried to kill her. Though the risks were high she ventured on pretending to search for an end to the forest, while knowing there was none.
It took two days but two of the people who she had seen looking smug become aware there was in fact no end. Though she saw no sign of anger on their faces, she believed they were the Toviitsa in her half of the group.
Another day passed she told everyone to relax, she was hoping that the Toviitsa would try to kill her if not then they were either better than she thought, or there were none in the group.
Ra’m decided to go back, now well convinced that they were not in her group. The next day she began the return trip wondering if Hochiesa had been attacked.
Ra’m took her pack and led the group past the boundaries of the camp and into the expanse of a large field littered with little blue and white flowers. She watched as the wind blew and her hair blew onto her face, she realised then that she had not bathed in days. She led the group to a partially clear river and told them to wash up.
Ra’m left one of the elders in charge and walked down the river to wash up. As she washed she looked at her reflection her once bright blue eyes were now grey with tire, her hair was no longer brown but a brilliant red, even her smile was different. There was no doubt now this journey had changed her, now she could see that not only in herself but her view on the world around her changed. She now thought of not the past and sorrow, but the future and what was in store for Hochiesa and herself. She no longer felt the lingering guilt that had so long held her, she no longer felt responsible for her parents death.
The night they died she had told them that she didn’t want to go with them on the towns annual Star Walk. They decided to respect her wishes and left after making careful preperations, though she didn’t know why they were packing their rune necklaces and clothes she always assumed that they were just going to be gone long, even after they died.
Ra’m looked down to the rune necklace on her neck and quietly sobbed, closing her eyes. When she opened her eyes she felt something she never had on the necklace before, she spotted it and recognized it as a hinge, like on a door but smaller more suited to a locket, but this wasn’t a locket, was it? She looked at it suspiciously as if she believed her eyes were deceiving her. Unfortunately for her they were not, there were hinges and there was something inside. She breathed deeply and slowly opened the locket, what she found inside terrified her so much she tore the necklace off and threw it as far away from herself as she could. When Ra’m finally calmed herself down she got out of the water and put her clothes on.
Ra’m returned to the group and found even the children were ready to leave. She smiled when a child came to her and put a flower in her hand. The child returned to the group and awaited the beginning of the rest of their journey. Ra’m realized they were waiting for her and waved her hand gesturing for them to continue.
For hours they walked up and down hills feeling as if their heads were about to explode from all the pressure brought upon by the wind. They walked on even though the pain was hard to bear.
“Only a little further”, she said as the group climbed the last hill.
When they got over it Hochiesa and the other half of the group was already at the site. Ra’m smiled seeing there were less people than before.
“Did you run into trouble?” she asked out of breath, “I sure… didn’t until we had to go up those hills.”
“Well why didn’t you come back the way you came?” Hochiesa asked in turn, “Yeah you could say there were a lot of Toviitsa, I’m surprised you didn’t run into any.”
Ra’m looked up and replied, “You know they might have been after just you.”
“You’re right what would they do with you, you’d give up as soon as you saw them.”
“Is that why I never get invited to their parties?” Ra’m said smiling, “So uhh, we leaving tomorrow because it looks like you weren’t ready for us.”
“Actually we just finished unpacking when you joined us.” Hochiesa said starting to get serious.
“Great, we stay the night then and enter the darkest forest on Freischer in the morning.”
“Are you trying to emphasize the danger we’re in by saying that?” Hochiesa asked.
“What do you think?” Ra’m replied rolling her eyes.
Ra’m turned around told her group to pitch their tents and get some rest. She then walked up to a wild fruit tree and climbed up it. Even though there was no fruit anymore she wanted to be able to see where the forest ended. When she looked out though the forest seemed to never end, she looked out for miles but still only saw trees. They seemed to bend against the wind, but as she realized it Hochiesa called her down to eat.
After they ate Ra’m walked back to the tree and set her bed up in the branches. She tied herself to the branch and got comfortable. As she slipped into a deep sleep the stars shone and she heard the wind howl by, she saw something but it moved too quickly for her eye to catch.
Ra’m slept soundly that night and woke up to the sound and smell of sizzling meat. She climbed out of the tree and smiled as she saw Hochiesa cooking. When he turned around she immediately stopped smiling and looked away.
Hochiesa had seen her turn away when he looked at her. He thought for a moment then came to the conclusion that she had begun to like him, he smiled and returned to cooking the meat.
Ra’m looked back, she didn’t want to seem rude so she went back to the tree and took her rope and blanket down. She turned around to put them in her pack, and as she did she bumped into Hochiesa.
“I’m so sorry”, Ra’m said while Hochiesa said, “Let me get that for you.”
“What?” they both said then Ra’m giggled.
Hochiesa cleared his throat then said, “Ra’m… umm…”
“Actually my name is Raomme”, Ra’m told him.
Hochiesa stood there silent for a bit, trying to process what she had just told him and what he was about to say, “Why did you change your name?” he finally asked.
Ra’m looked down as if she had to think about her answer, “I guess I just wanted to shorten it”, she said after taking a deep breath.
“You just wanted to shorten it? If I were you I would never change it.” Hochiesa said trying to be thoughtful, “I mean why change a beautiful name like Raomme into a…”
“A, what? A terrible name like Ra’m?” she said trying to get her foot in the door.
“You know that’s not what I meant”, he replied trying to defend himself.
Ra’m giggled, “Yeah, I just wanted to wrench the door open”, she said smiling.
“The door to what Raomme? What door?” he asked as Ra’m walked away.
“Come, discover my story”, she said turning around and walking backwards, when they were alone behind a tree she said, “I was the one who was adopted not Tamiin.”
