The current record for special release pets is 7000+ (bunnies)
Because lions are a special release they come under that part (:

The record thread only has a category for the largest "special species" hoard as a whole,
and lions fall under that, since they're not a regular monthly adopt.
The current record is held by a bunny hoarder, though, so no clue who has the most lions.

Hrrm, does anyone else ever get tired of their hoard? I think I'm falling out of love with my "Bad to the Bone" hoard.
