There are too many drop-down tabs when i put my mouse on the "main character" tab. It breaks the harmony on the site.

You could try add images of the characters on the main page of the site. Also,

Personally the drop down menu doesn't bug me, if you wanna break it up maybe go by species, or if your a character world kinda person maybe region

anything that could be added to make it better?
Tags/thumb nails/some kind of clickable preview of characters on one or a few pages.
Ex. Page Main: has mini images of all characters linked and possibly broke down pages of say canines that have images of all the canines linked. Example of the main page idea here

It depends.
If your character's story is related to the world, it's very useful to have a well developed world. But if it's not, maybe it's waste of time.
Some of my character's stories happens in real life while others happen in a fantasy world.

I think it's really cool! ^^ I'm actually planning on making my own world for my characters, and the map if sort of planned out in my head~
