How do you come up with your characters personalities? Do you pick one trait and go from there?
I used to do that, but now I choose three questions ands go purely from there.

What do you do when you love a character; but can't think of a personality you haven't already used?
Oh, this is a tough one. I sometimes go by the questions, but I can also go and search up some interesting personality traits and choose three or two, then go from there~

Is there any personality trait you avoid giving your characters?
None really, I like to have a wide range. From lazy, to goody-goody all the way to pure rude... cx

Most of mine were based off a general trait actually. Their design often was meant to visually reflect this base trait

Honestly I have no issue reusing some traits as ling as the combination is different. For example: caph and hijynx both have nurturing traits, but if I had to lay out in order to which each trait shows caph would be
Alcoholic
Mentally unsound
Dramatic
Socially inappropriate
Nurturing
Chaotic good

Whereas hi would lay out
Nurturing
Paranoid
Lawfully good
Generally moodiness

Having a combination of different traits allows your characters realism and fluidity in multiple situations. It also allows for endless single duplicates.


Is there any personality trait you avoid giving your characters?
Not really. I have certain character elements I usually avoid (unexplained/genetic magic). I often avoid putting standardised mental disabilities. While I am aware that caph is a glaring contradiction on that statement get background, history, storyline and the fact that...oh wait she's infected with a slow moving zombie virus type thing (virus side effects include a loose definition of insanity) so it's more based off external factors.
On a whole what I really try not to do is limit a character to one specific trait. I prefer personality realism
