just aguring another opinion on this: you do not "own" these codes
in the moderator's perspective, they cannot really give "ownership" of a set of code to anyone in particular.
how would they know who created it first? indeed, you can look at the post date, but if this was done for every situation, many could simply override this and edit the code into an older post, correct?
it is like posting an image on a social media site. it now runs through their system, granting anyone at a certain level of access. you never know who has your picture, nor know who is using it. CS is not the only site using BBCode. in fact, most bulletin boards use this form of coding, as a simplified HTML. therefore, you may not even be certain as to if anyone copied a form and is using it on another forum. BBCode is a script free to anyone, and we are simply utilizing it, meaning, i'm afraid, not much can be done.

it really is a question of morality. i can only say this. THOSE WHO STEAL LACK THE COMPETENCE CREATE. i mean, using someone else's coding and claiming it is yours versus giving them a "thank you" or credit and saying how they inspire you are two different roads. the idiot takes the first path. the wise and learner takes the second, correct?
moderators cannot be morality teachers. they can only use their power to some extent, which is pure force and power of admin. you have to learn morality yourself, which some will never do.

Re: um, attention please?

thorne. wrote:
hey, guys. it has come to my attention that stuff has been getting stolen left and right and i'd like to address it right here, right now. i'm specifically talking about coding, and let me tell y'all this upfront: it's incredibly rude and rather insulting to see another version of your own stuff getting ripped off. i'm not just talking about myself personally either; i've seen variations of aurie's, diem's, deer's and many other people's coding floating around on this site as well and i'm getting sick and tired of seeing people get praised for using something that was originally someone else's. and i'm sure the other avid coders might also share my thoughts.
i know the roleplay moderators don't find it in their job descriptions to do anything about it since this doesn't exactly have anything to do with writing. however bbcoding isn't as limited as the cs staff and most everyone seem think. we've all seen things like thieving occur one way or another and i don't like sitting around helplessly as it's all happening. quoting and copying a feature of someone's post, however small it may be, and then pasting it on your own form, only to change it a little, is not okay. it's considered "stealing". this might go unnoticed to most, but to me and some others, it's quite obvious when it's our own work that's being taken. i'm not going to name names nor am i directly calling anyone out here, but these people know who they are and trust me, we also know who they are. the coding that someone else might have spent hours upon hours trying to create, practically virtual art that is written out in a creative style their own, only to get taken within seconds and duplicated. it doesn't matter if it's just out of pure adoration, or if you're just trying to be like the person, it's not cool or "hip"; quite frankly, it just feels like a slap in the face.
also, blindly copying someone's original form, changing the color and information and then slapping down the creator's name on the bottom isn't okay either. even if they were credited, how would they know if their form is being taken - or where it's going - without a decent warning? the kind and courteous thing to do is ask for permission personally from the creator each time you decide to use one of their forms, just saying.
anyway, i apologize for the length of this rant and my angry tone quality, but it portrays exactly how i'm feeling concerning the subject. i could have shorted it to two sentences, but to be honest, that wouldn't be enough.

this has needed to be said for so long and I'm glad thorne finally did so. I know I'm not a coder, but I know when things are being stolen and even though it doesn't directly effect me, I know how it upsets people. It's irritating and just plain rude. People here may act like it doesn't effect them or that they're not doing anything wrong, and that's fine. I'm not going to call anyone out and neither will anyone else, because we're polite. But just know this is to the people who don't want to own up to it; we all know who this is directed to and who's doing the stealing. This is just for the benefit of warning everyone that the coders (like thorne and aurie) are aware of it and aren't going to put up with it.
    Whew. Okay. ends rant

    wait wait wait
i want to add my two cents here
i know a lot of you guys probably do understand [we've all had stuff stolen]- but think of this from specifically thorne's perspective, and mine as well i suppose. oh, and diem since she's like a coding icon.
did you see how many people admitted they were stalking her? tons. like more than half the thread. while its flattering and makes you feel like you're doing something right- it also makes everyone want to use your forms.
all the sudden you've got all this newfound attention on your storage thread and it's a bit overwhelming when you log in and suddenly see something you were proud of on two or three or tons of other threads. like a bad version of 'trendsetting'.
i'm not telling anyone to stop looking at character threads, but with everyone agreeing with her rant you might not understand the total length that applies to it.
i, personally, don't code for compliments or for the viewers eye. i don't try to purposely impress anyone. it's what i love. it's a passion or a hobby or whatever you want to call it. i know i'm not the only one who feels this way.
does this make any sense? lol.

but mint brings a valid point. nobody owns BBcode, but what about the symbols we use? lyrics? layout? dividers? blocks? fonts? colors? images? stuff that can be mixed and matched and changed with a simple bold, underline, size or italic. that, my friends, is what makes coding unique.
she is also right on how it's also just a topic of moral. nobody will get in trouble with the staff- but as you're copying a piece of someone's code just think about it, yeah?

i'm going to take mint's side on this one
while it's really damn annoying when you see a format that might be "yours", honestly, you can't put a copyright on coding, especially with bbc. from what i understand, it's not even a type of coding at all [like, for example, HTML, java, etc.], but more of a text manipulator sort of thing. there's really nothing a moderator can do, in that case, in a case where a form looks extremely similar [or yes, even the same as] another form, because you can't really "steal" coding when it never really belonged to anyone. not technically, at least.
writing, on the other hand, or an original image [i.e. something you've drawn / made yourself, such as a gif from a movie or a photo you took] most certainly "belongs" to a person, which is why moderators can actually legitimately warn someone when they steal a plot, character, writing, or image. bbc isn't protected with the same sort of laws / rules like that. it's too easy to duplicate coding sometimes. for example, there's a limited number of ways you can make a code to center and resize something. yes, there are creative ways to manipulate the bbc code [and y'all do it wonderfully btw like wow], but the code itself is not yours.

so yeah. when someone "steals" code, there's a limit to what a mod can do about it. honestly there's really no great solution. it's a grey area. but when someone is going and quoting your form and changing around the hex codes, asking them about it, i would assume, would be the quickest way to a solution. but there's a difference between that and someone who's getting inspiration from a form you made.
personally i've never come across this problem because my coding sucks and no one wants to steal it so i really don't have much experience with solutions but yeah

and i think aurie brings up a good point about "stalkers". honestly stalkers should have the sense to not copy forms -- but of course, being inspired by forms is another thing entirely. unfortunately, when a trend starts organically it's not really "stealing" ...

      no one's in the wrong [except for people that blatantly copy and paste codes and say they made the thing on their own] or right here, but yeah there's like lots of little things and stuff sorry for preaching ;;

and another thing is writing! people still my writing too ... *pulls out hair*

does anybody want to huddle in a support group?

ok sorry for double posting but IF SOMEONE IS STEALING WRITING THAT IS A BAD you should report them that is not ok that's actually a thing the mods can look into and warn users about GO GET EM

it did get a tad stressful here..

But anyway, I don't normally ask for critiques,
but here's a form that i made.. And I tried to base it off of some of Thorne's things. (AKA the left side)
and I feel like it needs some help. Obviously there's no helping on the color since it's all black and white
but I feel like the words and fonts don't mix together well.

I did not steal a single thing in case someones about to accuse me because of the current conversation. It's just the whole text art thing inspired me, so I'm just trying out something new.
