hey, guys. it has come to my attention that stuff has been getting stolen left and right and i'd like to address it right here, right now. i'm specifically talking about coding, and let me tell y'all this upfront: it's incredibly rude and rather insulting to see another version of your own stuff getting ripped off. i'm not just talking about myself personally either; i've seen variations of aurie's, diem's, deer's and many other people's coding floating around on this site as well and i'm getting sick and tired of seeing people get praised for using something that was originally someone else's. and i'm sure the other avid coders might also share my thoughts.
i know the roleplay moderators don't find it in their job descriptions to do anything about it since this doesn't exactly have anything to do with writing. however bbcoding isn't as limited as the cs staff and most everyone seem think. we've all seen things like thieving occur one way or another and i don't like sitting around helplessly as it's all happening. quoting and copying a feature of someone's post, however small it may be, and then pasting it on your own form, only to change it a little, is not okay. it's considered "stealing". this might go unnoticed to most, but to me and some others, it's quite obvious when it's our own work that's being taken. i'm not going to name names nor am i directly calling anyone out here, but these people know who they are and trust me, we also know who they are. the coding that someone else might have spent hours upon hours trying to create, practically virtual art that is written out in a creative style their own, only to get taken within seconds and duplicated. it doesn't matter if it's just out of pure adoration, or if you're just trying to be like the person, it's not cool or "hip"; quite frankly, it just feels like a slap in the face.
also, blindly copying someone's original form, changing the color and information and then slapping down the creator's name on the bottom isn't okay either. even if they were credited, how would they know if their form is being taken - or where it's going - without a decent warning? the kind and courteous thing to do is ask for permission personally from the creator each time you decide to use one of their forms, just saying.
anyway, i apologize for the length of this rant and my angry tone quality, but it portrays exactly how i'm feeling concerning the subject. i could have shorted it to two sentences, but to be honest, that wouldn't be enough.
