{{ I have no willpower when it comes to my cats. One of them's laying on my arm/shoulder/hand/everything I need to type with and I just can't bring myself to move him. He's such a cutie. <3 }}
Hino smiled faintly as his thoughts drifted briefly to her. He thought she could be useful. I want to be. She remembered vaguely that she'd been useful long ago, when she wasn't still so new and relatively fragile. When she didn't need a kelpie to protect her. But she couldn't remember how she'd been useful, only that people had praised and thanked her. She liked when people thanked her.
Oops. She licked her lips as she dropped farther into his subconscious; it was too easy to do. At least she couldn't do any damage, but she didn't want to see what he didn't want to show her. Like Danielle. And the fact that he didn't plan to come with them. She abruptly moved her hands to his cheeks, making him look at her with a surprisingly fierce--if absurdly childish and mulish--expression.
You're coming with us. Even if I have to ask Jake to drag you along, she pushed into his mind firmly, a glimmer of fire dancing through her eyes. She meant it too; it was easy to get attached when you dove into someone's mind, saw the goodness within them that they themselves couldn't see. He was so strange, so...scared, in his own way. She smiled at him and patted his cheek like an old lady, even though she had to stand on her toes to be able to look him in the eye.
Jake crossed her ankles, narrowing her eyes at him. A traitor. Where she came from, they killed traitors, even the ones who wanted to repent. Especially the ones that wanted to repent. Because then you hadn't just betrayed your people, you betrayed the ones you chose over your people. But she looked at Hino and sighed, resigning herself to working with him. If Hino was still holding onto him like that, then there was no way he was 'badbad', as Hino would say. She glanced over at Laila, wondering if she should tell her as much.
She sighed and reached out to touch Laila's hand lightly. "Trust Hino," she murmured. "I'd trust her with my soul--and I'd sell my soul to protect her. I do not trust lightly, Nix--" it no longer sounded like an insult, more a sign of mutual respect. "She has saved me in more than one way." Jake grimaced and dropped her hand, turning back to her book. Exposing that much about herself was...uncomfortable to say the least.
