Cam nodded. "Yeah," he said.

Alli bit her lip. "What would you have done if...if he'd done it?"

Cam sighed, looking at his feet then back at her. "I don't know. I guess take you home, and put you to rest there. And then... Try to go on for the kids."

Alli managed a small smile, relieved that he would go on. "Well you won't have to worry about that for a long, long time."

He nodded, and kissed her head. "I know," he said.

Alli closed her eyes as he kissed her head. She could only hope that when the time came, she would go first. She couldn't imagine a world without her Cam.

Cam hoped just the opposite; that he'd go first.

Alli squeezed his hand gently. Her eyes were beginning to droop with exhaustion; the medicine had finally kicked in. A yawn escaped her lips.

Cam sat by her. "Go to sleep baby. I'll try to go talk to the king then come back."
