"I know, but..." Alli bit down hard on her lip. It really did hurt, whether it was a vital part of her body or merely her shoulder. She whimpered and squeezed her eyes shut.

Cam sighed as the person led them to the infirmary. "You're gonna be okay," he promised.

Alli held onto him, her shoulder throbbing painfully.

Cam laid her on the gurney, sighing. "You're okay."

Alli bit down hard on her lip to keep from whimpering again. She didn't want to seem like she was overreacting.

Cam sighed. "Let it out, Alli," he said.

Alli squeezed his hand tightly with her good one. "It hurts..."

Cam nodded. "I know," he said, and kissed her head. The nurse sighed. "We're going to have to pull the knife out. Ready, ma'am?"

Alli braced herself and squeezed Cam's hand again. "I'm ready," she said through her teeth.

Cam held her hand in both of his. The nurse nodded. "One... two..." she said, putting her hand on Alli's shoulder and gripping the handle. "Three," she said, and pulled the knife quickly, freeing it from her shoulder.
