I speak Korean and Japanese (so I know quite a few kanji).
I'm not Chinese though, but I would love to take it up in my free time. How similar are Japanese kanji to Chinese characters?

They are pretty similar, but Japanese kanji uses traditional Chinese characters, so it'll be a bit tough.

kanji are the traditional form of chinese characters, and depending on if youre learning mandarin or cantonese will determine how similar they are. mandarin chinese, the offical language in mainland china, uses simplified characters, some of which DO appear in japanese, for example zhong 中. however in hong kong and taiwan they speak cantonese, which is a different dialect of chinese, and still write in traditional characters, which are much more complex and more similar to kanji.
