I don't think anyone knows for sure, so experiment!
My times have been 10 and 7 minutes for common dragons. Both still hatched normally.

I heard that even after having 0 hours it still has 30 min or so to live and to put it on every click site you know when its at zero.

I'm fairly certain you need to be closer to the time of death. More like less than five minutes.
