Maia Stevens – Student – Growing/Controlling Plants – Location: Rose's House
Maia had barely stopped the SUV in Rose's driveway when the other girl jumped out and ran for the house. A little more calmly, she turned off the SUV and hopped out, closing her door as well as Rose's before walking up to the house. Stepping inside, she found Rose staring at an old rocking chair and an orange tabby. She walked up to the other girl, simply setting her hand on Rose's shoulder. "I'm sorry." Her voice was soft, gentle. Seeing anyone in this kind of pain was hard. Losing a family member was rough. Unexpectedly and with completely unexplainable circumstances, even worse.
She stood there for a few minutes, trying to give Rose time to attempt to come to terms with everything, but there were things that need doing. Taking the other girl's hand, she lightly pulled Rose over to the couch, making her sit down. Grabbing a chair, she pulled it over so she was facing Rose directly. "Rose," She said softly, trying to get her attention. "Something is going on here. We don't know what, or how, or why, but someone needs to step up. I’m not from around here. People don’t know me, so they won’t trust me. Someone has to take charge, get things organized.” Although she spoke as if she knew what she was talking about, in truth she was completely winging it. Nothing could have ever prepared anyone for this kind of situation, but now they had to make the best of it.
“Food, water, shelter, clothes, these are all things that we once took for granted. Police, firemen, doctors, electricians, cooks, they are all gone. We are going to figure out how to do everything ourselves.” Maia said ‘matter-of-fact’ly. She was running on the simple assumption that the grownups were gone, and they weren’t coming back anytime soon. “We need to secure food, a water source, and medicine. We need to visit another town, since we don’t know how widespread this thing is. Maybe it’s local, maybe it’s global. We need to check houses for young children. Imagine how many could be alone and scared right now.” Honestly she had no clue if anything she was saying was getting through to Rose, or if it was helping at all, but she desperately hoped it was. “I have a couple suggestions of things to do before we go back to the school. That is, if you want to go back. It’s all up to you.”
