((Hah, there's no such thing as too many words. (: It was a lovely post.))

Hrafn- Hunter- 46 Summers.

Having checked on the wolves in the back half of the group and gauged that they were all whole and had their wits about them, he returned to the tail end of the pack. He fell in line behind them just in time to see Lani run towards the retreating Attican, then balk and return to the group. She truly cared for the Keeper, that much was obvious. In her upset state, she managed to slam into the rump of the pretty blonde wolf. Hrafn tried to remember her name, distracting himself from the murderous monster that stalked them. Piper? Pirouette? Pine? Finally it clicked. Pilot. Pleased with his memory, the big black brute pranced for three strides before returning to his normal lope.

Pulling up beside Lani, he matched her pace, running shoulder to shoulder with the older white female. "I'm sorry, Lani. I didn't mean to leave so hastily before. Experience has taught me that if you don't check on the slowest often, they tend to give up." Casting his dark amber gaze upon her face, he noted the obvious distress in her features. She worried for Attican and rightly so. He wouldn't have run back into the mouth of the bright beast without a damn good reason. Resin was obviously that reason for the Keeper.

Hrafn couldn't remember seeing the dark Alpha as they ran. With her wound, she would have been running at the back of the pack or at least the middle of she pushed herself. Just to double check, he scanned the area, his thoughts confirmed. She wasn't anywhere in sight. Worry bit him in the rump and to distract himself, he continued to speak to Lani, hoping to distract her as well. "He'll come back. He's too smart to let that bright monster beat him. He'll find the ones that he seeks and he'll return. They'll all return." He believed his words wholeheartedly, but worry still chased him.

Resin- Alpha Female- 40 Summers.

Sleep had claimed her quickly and she slept deep; dreams eluding her. The distant crackle and roar of the all-devouring sun beast didn't even cause the femme to stir. What did manage to finally wake her was Ahote. His stirring brought her eyes open quickly and she searched his face, looking for signs of distress. His features changed as she watched. He was obviously dreaming. Every now and again little muffled noises would escape from his maw.

Wriggling her body closer, she placed her head over the back of his neck, pulling him close. Repeatedly she nuzzle the top of his head, the repetitive motion bringing comfort to her and hopefully it would calm him as well. The dream came to a peak and he jerked roughly beneath her. Eyes widening slightly, she brought her head back and licked along the side of his muzzle just as her mother used to do when she was a pup. The action seemed to help, for his struggles lessened.

Now that she had a gauge on his dream state, she pulled herself close to him again and began to do something that she had never done for another wolf. She sang. Now, wolves weren't the greatest singers due to their voices being so gruff, but Resin was an exception. She was quite proud of her voice, but in this aspect she was very, very shy. In all of her years alive, she doubted that anyone had ever heard her singing voice. Had Ahote been awake, he wouldn't have heard it either since the action never would have crossed her mind. Now, however, she sang soft and low, an old, old song that had been taught to her by her fathers father.

On and on she sang, her eyes, as bright as the raging fire outside, locked on the sleeping, injured wolf beside her. When her song ended, she rested her neck over the back of Ahote's shoulders and took to humming instead. She listened and she felt, her senses completely in tune to the brute. He had come back for her despite the dangers that plagued them. He had sustained injuries on her behalf. The least that she could do was to try and make him sleep easy and peacefully.

A loud crack cut the song short and was followed by a heavy thud. Moving forward, Resin pushed her muzzle through the wall of snow, eyes slightly squinted against the outside world. The beast had reached them, it seemed. Against her will, a worried whine poured from her throat. The clearing was completely surrounded by a wall of yellow and orange light. The trees roared in pain and buckled beneath the weight of the bright tendrils that the beast wrapped around them. Resin could feel the heat pouring off of the bright wall. This was indeed the sun come to earth.

What would they do when the monster came to claim them? The clearing was large, but it wasn't that large. Surely they would be seen by the bright monster. Slowly she pulled her head back into the snow cave, covering it once again with the white powder. She curled her dark body tightly around Ahote. There was nothing that they could do but wait. They could be waiting to die or they could be waiting to live. As of that moment, Resin wasn't quite sure what sort of waiting they were doing.

{{No worries, I've carried a massive case of WB ever since the holiday. Cannot seem to string two sentences together without it sounding blocky and stiff. Been trying to write my way through it, but apparently I'm in it pretty deep with an average of an hour per post. lol}}

Attican
73 - Brute - Keeper

____________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Opening your mind sounded so simple in theory. Sure, clear your mind and let your head relax - take in what was (or wasn't) in front of you and see what is/wasn't truly there. Meanwhile the forest around you is burning to the sloshy floor, black soot from the living sun contaminating the air and choking your insides.

"Come on Attican, you must focus!" He muttered to himself, not caring if the etheral Pipaluk could hear him or not. Now was not a time to be fixated upon one's ego. He squinted his eyes once more, looking for any sort of different appearance that could be her. A strange tickling sensation wriggled across his chest, taking him aback. Okay, she was really there, only the former Eldest had ever done something like that before.

"Work while you run, Attican. The sun has turned it's attentions this way."

"A-Alright." He agreed, legs carrying towards the direction of the apparitions snuffle. He wasn't sure of where he was going, but considering the fact he was essentially helpless otherwise he really carried no other choice. He trusted Pipa on Earth and as time went on, he was more and more convinced this was her on the secondary side. Plus, he had no intention of coming face to face with the sun again if he could help it.

She led him by the nose bumps and her voice, directing him to a different ways every time he needed to turn, the brute more or less walking completely blind. As he walked he continued to try to envision her, unsure if it was something he'd actually see with his eyes or if it was more mental. In his head he tried picturing the wolfess, her toothy grin and wet nose prodding him with earnest movement. Yet the sounds of the fire continued to return to his ears, pulling his attention away. A burnt tree crumbled to blackened chips in the foreground, making his tail fray. Time was against them.

He was getting tired. The unhealthy air was taking its toll upon the older brute as he moved and the dirty sloshy ground made it hard goings for progress. Every once in awhile Attican would return Pipa's directions, little 'alright's' or 'okay's' slipping out of his mouth. As he did so though more and more of his mind released, letting go of the doubts and allowing more freedom of possibility. Before he even realized it a very thin outline of a being stood before him, the wispy edges more or less giving the idea of the shape of a great wolf. His ears pinned to his dirty skull, eyes tracing this new apparition. he couldn't be sure if it was actually her or if it was the smog or his fatigue playing new tricks. For now he wasn't going to say anything.

"They're just up ahead, Attican. Just a little further now."

"Yes okay," he agreed. Despite the predicament he felt a weight lift off of him as he was told that they were close. Fire or no fire he was moving forward. With the two other wolves reunited and Pipa as a help perhaps there was hope just yet. He was unaware of Nanuk's presence as well, but he would have been immensely thankful for his help that he was offering too.

Finally a makeshift den came into view. Attican's whole sooty body changed, the language of it perking up in an instant. They were here! They had made it! He turned to the direction of his latest nose bump to express his elation, but suddenly to his immense surprise he was not just turning to air. "Oh.. Pipa!" He rasped, his amber eyes widening. a young female stood in his presence, healthy and in her prim. She was by no means solid, in fact he could see through to what was behind her, but still all the same she was there, the same toothy grin (except with more teeth) sitting upon her face. The relief of finding Resin and Ahote had lastly broke through that last barrier, allowing the Keeper sight of his directors.

He didn't have time to revel though. The fire drew ever-closer and he could feel the heat as it inched its way branch-by-branch towards them. The light tower grew taller and more powerful every moment, the poor innocent trees bending and screaming in its wake. "Thank you!" He called, turning back to the dugout. Not knowing if the ancestor would stay or go Attican pushed his way to the opening. He hoped that she would stay, even with three heads thinking he still was unsure if they could make their way out.

"Hello?" He asked, voice deeper than normal from the ash. His shadow cast on the inside of the hole, his blackened fur altering his actual appearance. "We must go! The sun is returning and Pipa says it will envelope this entire area. Are you alright to move?"

It wouldn't make sense to them, to be honest he didn't really even think about what he sounded like as he said it. All he wanted to do was get everyone out. He poked at the small hole, soggy paws digging at it in impatience.

Pilot
32 - Fae - No Rank

___________________________________________________________________________________________________________

Pilot had traveled with the group wherever they went, every twist and turn pressed into the group like a huge flock. She was silent this entire time, her head and heart wrapped in thoughts as the miles went by. If Xani hadn't found her then perhaps she would have been on her own when the light ate the trees. Perhaps she would have been sleeping when it happened just like she had in the cave and without Hrafn to wake her up she could have been next on the list to join the ancestors. She considered herself very lucky.

Finally it seemed that they slowed even more, the pace changing to a slow walk. Voices called out and wolves spoke, once again the constant droning hum meeting her ears. A few voices rose above the rest, but nothing that the female could pick out on the side that she was on. Due to the fact of her newness she was not even aware that Ahote or Resin were missing.

Pilot had just peeled her side away from her travelmates when suddenly a furry chest bumped into her light-colored rear. A white body stumbled and fell its way into the snow, causing the females ears to pin back. Pilot too was pushed forwards but she managed to keep her footing enough to stay upright. "Oh ooh, I'm sorry!" She crooned, turning around to see the scene. She wasn't sure who's fault it was, but she worried the wolf had injured herself. However the white wolfess appeared fine, mumbling frustrated things under her breath about herself.

"Hey I'm so sorry," Pilot offered, true concern etched over her face. "Are you okay?" Her tail swished twice, as if offering some type of encouragement. She recognized the wolf as the one who had run with her during the hunt, the same one who appeared to always have a great smile plastered to her face. Now that it was gone she looked tired and helpless. The urge to say more overwhelmed the small fae, wanting to see the silly grin once again dawn the nameless female's features. However before she could say anything more the big black wall of a brute Hrafn showed up.

He spoke to the female, calling her 'Lani.' Pilot stored the name in her head for later, filing it away so that she'd hopefully not forget. She smiled encouragingly, the trio essentially being the epitome of differences. A young short blonde fae, a massive black brute, and an older white wolfess all standing together at once. She chuckled to herself at the thought.

"I'm Pilot by the way," she offered, nose twitching once.

Xani
- Female - 21 - Fighter -

As the pack continued on, Xani kept her wits about her. Glancing up to the sky, she did something she never had before- prayed. She closed her eyes for a moment as she called out to them in her mind. 'I have never asked anything of you before. I ask now that we survive this. All of us.' As she finished, her eyes flashed open once more and scanned the area around them. The beast was more behind them than it had been, but it was still a threat.

Glancing over her shoulder, Xani counted the pack. It seemed that no one else had run off since Attican, for which she was grateful. As she turned once more to look at her path, however, she spotted something. It appeared to be a gray wolf, smaller than she was. He was ahead of the pack. She couldn't tell who it was, meaning that it could be an infected wolf. Her eyes narrowed as she turned to a hunter next to her. "Keep the pack on this heading until Hrafn comes here. Then tell him the same and switch with him to guard the rear." Veering off from the pack, she howled to Hrafn for him to take over the lead for the moment.

Turning her attention back to the strange wolf, Xani suddenly bolted. The wolf was ahead of them, but not directly. As Xani flew over the snow, she reached the strange wolf long before the pack would. Her posture was that of a leader as she stopped a few feet from him, her eyes combing over him. "Tell me. Have you been around any strange, diseased wolves lately? If not, come with us. There is a deadly beast loose in these woods." She decided not to tell him what would happen if he had been infected. He would find out the hard way.

~|Hrafn|~Hunter|~ 46 Summers|~

The giant black brute flashed a winning smile to the little blonde female and offered her a nod. "Hrafn, miss. Watch it." He alerted the pair to a stump of tree that had appeared in their path while they walked. He had just begun to speak again when Xani howled for him. With a sigh, he shook his head. "Duty calls yet again. Stay safe, ladies. We'll be running again soon."

With a few bounds he was running to the head of the pack. Their pace was slow, so it didn't take him long. Once there, he was given a message by a brown and grey brute who promptly loped to the position that Hrafn had just left. Eyeing the prints before him, the black wolf surmised that Xani had seen something and had run ahead to check it out. Hopefully she was being careful. There were too few wolves of rank for him to go look after her.

He kept the pace steady, but still quick. The loping speed would let them build up some energy reserves just in case they had to run for their lives. Hrafn tested the air now and again, searching for anything that would help or hinder them. Glancing behind, he saw the yellow and orange wall was slowly closing in. Lifting his muzzle, he howled, prompting the wolves into a run once more. The more distance they put between the monster and themselves, the better.

As they ran, he continued to test the air, sniffing out anything that might give them an edge. And then he found it. Water. Running water. Adjusting his course, he pulled the pack left, howling out to Xani as he did so. She would need to know where he was taking them. In time they arrived at the river. He didn't know that it was the same river that Wolf had recently crossed. Other than smoke, however, he saw no sign of the forest devouring monster on the other side because there was no forest on the other side.

Charred stalks reached feebly to the air. These had once been the proud pines that littered the area. Small piles of smoking debris were all that remained. They didn't know what rested on the other side of the river, but they did know what rested on this side. Choosing life rather than death, he prompted the pack across the slow moving river. The water was no more than chest deep. The pups might need a bit of help crossing, but there was barely any current, so they wouldn't be swept downstream.

The water was bitter cold, but the coolness was welcome after being bombarded by the heat of the traveling sun that had chased them. One by one he saw the wolves across. He grabbed Kona first, taking her across, then grabbed Azaria second, doing the same with her. He then called out to the wolves around him."Once we're all on the other side, take a small rest. We'll wait for Xani to catch up before we start again."

~|Resin|~Alpha Female|~ 40 Summers|~

Another bit of rumbling met her ears and the snow shelter started to shake, a bit of the snow falling inward. A growl tore through her and she was prepared to attack whatever was trying to force it's way in when she felt that familiar tingle in her mind. A second later Attican's soot covered head popped inside the snow den. Resin's yellow eyes widened. "Attican?" Instantly she nuzzled the older wolf, her cheek sliding along his.

For a second there she thought she heard him say that Pipaluk had led him here, but that couldn't be right, so she let the statement slide right on by. The space inside wasn't big enough for three of them, so she informed him that she was coming out and then did so. Once outside, her eyes widened once more. The heat from the nearby beast threatened to bake her alive. The towering, dancing wall of light drew ever closer and was threatening to close them completely within a circle of flame.

"Attican, I don't think Ahote can move. I had to drag him here and he hasn't woken up at all." Nervously, she looked back towards the den where the burnt brown wolf rested. "I'll try to wake him." Using her bulk, she pushed a large hole in the side of the snow drift, exposing Ahote to the warmth of the forest fire. "Ahote..." she spoke softly, nudging his cheek with the tip of her muzzle.

As she waited for Ahote to wake, she took the opportunity to question the Keeper. "Is everyone safe? Did they all get out okay? Tell me." Though she was listening for Attican's reply, she continued to nudge and jostle the sleeping brown wolf. The longer he slept, the closer the blinding monster would get.

Kona
female-11-escaping from the beast

Kona continued running, watching that new she-wolf, what's-her-name, run in front of her. She choked on the black fog as it trickled through her nose and mouth, but she squinted, her vision becoming blurry, as she tried to keep the others in sight. Her lungs ached and her eyes stung, but she forced herself onwards.

Would Resin want you to stop? she asked herself. Would she be proud of you if you curled up into a ball and were eaten by the enemy?

Kona shook her head as if there were flies buzzing about it. The flecks from the raging monster fell on her pelt, leaving tiny scorch marks wherever they land. Thankfully, her fur was thick, and her will was strong. Kona kept following the blonde newcomer, stumbling occasionally, but always shoving herself back up.

She had completely forgotten her earlier discovery, and was no longer concerned with staying low to the ground and avoiding the smoke. Now, the only thing that mattered was getting out of here.

- - -

Everything was starting to look very... fuzzy. Kona blinked, but nothing changed. The form of the blonde far in front of her was fading, seeming to move farther and farther away. She stumbled, and felt the cool relief of the snow on her overheated muzzle.

It could be so nice, just to lie down in the snow, and sleep for a long, long time...

Then the crackling call of the beast and the crash of a falling tree drove all the fantasies from her head. Kona lifted her head to look behind her and almost jumped out of her pelt. The beast was there, gaining on her, barely a few lengths away. She yelped and crumbled to her paws, all the dizziness gone from her head. She looked ahead of her, and could just barely see the tails of her packmates.

Panicked, Kona bolted after them faster than she ever could remember herself running. She loped after them, terrified of the monster behind her. As she approached them very quickly, she found that it was a little difficult to get her legs to stop running. She managed to slow herself, but bumped into someone (she didn't notice who). Kona righted herself and continued keeping pace with everyone, adrenaline pumping through her veins.

She was so focused on running that she barely noticed when Hrafn skidded to a halt. Panting, she looked up to see the cause. Her heart leapt. A river! They were saved! She swayed on her legs, not quite sure if she could swim, or run, or even stand much longer. Her knees buckled just as Hrafn grabbed her by the scruff and pulled her into the river. The frigid waters shocked her legs into motion. Suddenly she felt much more aware of her surroundings.

She watched her packmates crossing the river, searching anxiously for one familiar face. She bumped against the river bank, and scrambled out, but now everything seemed surreal again, her few moments of total clarity and awareness slipping away from her.

Where was Resin?

Iparok
male-22-escaping from the sun

He skidded to a halt beside Hrafn as they reached the riverbank. Iparok glanced behind nervously. The monster was gaining. He watched Hrafn toss Kona, then Azaria into the river, and all the others after them. He noticed with growing unease that Attican, Ahote, and Resin were all missing.

Then it was his turn to cross the river. He gasped as the icy waters dug into his bones. He jerked his legs, propelling himself across the water, trying to ignore the intense cold. His paws scuffed across the muddy riverbed, and Iparok tried to ignore the horrible squelching feeling. He made a mental note to give his paws a deep cleaning when they had the chance. His claws scrabbled for purchase as the tried to clamber up the slippery riverbank.

He stood there for a moment, once-fluffy fur streaming water onto the ground. A line of water flowed down his muzzle and dripped off the end of his nose. Iparok staggered forward a few steps before stopping once again to shake himself. Still damp, but not dripping nearly as much, Iparok lurched onwards on stiff legs. Dimly, he registered Hrafn's voice, yelling something at them.

"Once we're all on the other side, take a small rest. We'll wait for Xani to catch up before we start again."

Gratefully, Iparok crumpled onto the musty reeds, cushioning him slightly from the mud that lay just a few steps away. Remembering his earlier resolution. Iparok began to clean he mud from his paws, gagging at the bitter, gritty taste.

~~..: Azaria::.5 years.::Pup/hunter in training.::w/other pups:..~~
One minute she was playing with the two other pups, the next everyone was being urged to leave the cave. She thought she was safe in the cave, but as she trotted out of the cave, she could see it in the distance, the great growling sun beast. She blinked her green eyes taking in the sight as it lept from tree top to tree top, coming for her, moving ever closer. She let out a whimper wanting to dive back into the cave, but with a soft whimper she turned and raced after the rest of the pack. Her green eyes dancing from one wolf to another, til her eyes landed on mirage. The elder black Wolf nuzzled her once as they hurried along their desperate path to escape the screaming beast behind them.

He offered others around them as much comfort as he could, as they ran, she coughed out the poisonous air, digging her paws into the icy snow, she hurried her pace fear pushing her onwards, the burning of her lungs. She grabbed up mouthfuls of snow as she ran trying to cool her burning lungs. She watched as Mirage backed off, to speak with an elder, in his good natured manner of his, wagging her tail she watched him back off, checking for other stragglers. She tilted her head trying to keep him in her view. But a mighty roar from the monster filled the air, and she watched as a tree tried to leap away from the attack of the sun beast, she lost sight of Mirage. She wanted to stop, her eyes following Attican and then Lani, only Lani returning to the pack. Worry and fear urged the young pup on and she ran her legs burning, as badly as her chest.

With each gasping breath, she could feel the whisper of the sun beasts bite on her hide, she could hear its cruel growl, and then she was flying through the air, hanging from Hfran's jaws, and then water closed over her head. With a screech she broke the surface gasping for air as she struggled for the far back, and soon up onto the muddy banks, her body shaking as she looked up, towards the hot beast behind. She turned her head, right and left panting she raced up to Hfran. "Sir, Sir...I'm sorry Sir..but Mirage," She paused uncertainly. "I can't find him sir,. She said looking back towards the flaming beast as it ate and procreated among the tree's beyond the river.

~~..:Lokia.::45 Years.::Loner.:: alone:..~~

The smell is what woke her, blinking she lifted her head, just as howls from the wolf pack not far from her reached her ears. The howls spoke of grave danger, and not just to themselves, but of those around them. She rose to her feet deep inside her little cave and crawled out, sniffing the air, a few ashes fell from the sky like snow. A low growl escaped her, and she shook her head. With a low growl she looked around sniffing the air she trotted into the woods keeping her ears turned back listening to the raging beast. She broke into a clearing not far from her small cave and stood starring in horror at the animal coming towards her among the trees. She took several steps back whining softly her eyes wide in horror. She backed up a few more strides.

Her memory of the next while is sketchy at best, she remembers running, she remembers weaving through the trees. She remembers thinking about going back to her cave, but she knows when her mind comes back into focus she knows she's been running for a long time, that her claws and paws ache that she can barley breath and that she is curled up inside of a new den, with a smaller black and still form curled up with her. Looking confused she studied the young wolf, trying to place him, he smelled of horridly of the beast, but under it, he smelled strongly of the wolves she'd met awhile ago. Feeling her confusion building she moved away from the young wolf and lay down again, letting her head rest upon her dirty paws, she watched him, waiting for him to awaken and answer her questions.

((Yay! Thank you Leo! Random thought: If Great Wolves had never seen fire before, then what was Ash named for? LOL I don't even know where I come up with this stuff...))

Ahote
Male | 46 | Fighter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Nestled close to Resin, Ahote's battered from seemed to still with the sound of her voice. Even in his deep sleep, his ears perked up as she sang to him, a gentle murr of happiness rumbling in his chest. Had he been awake to appreciate it, Ahote would have been filled with awe, as the only other time he had ever heard a wolf sing was his grandmother, and she had a voice like a hibernating snow bear's snore. Though his fitful dreams had left him, her voice still touched him, keeping him close to her and not allowing him to slip back into that darkness again.

Time passed, and still Ahote slept, completely unaware of its slow ebb of hours while Resin watched over him. Not even her growl nor the trembling of their snow shelter upon Attican's arrival roused him. It wasn't until she shook him and he happened to roll over, his entire world turning upside down, that he began to rouse. Even before he was fully aware, he began coughing, a deep rasping sound that shook his entire being. Finally, it was the cough managed to shake him awake, and he struggled to open his eyes. It seemed as though every inch of him burned, and he groaned painfully as the blinding light from the monster hit his eyes. Everything still seemed to be cloudy, as though the sickening black fog still lived within his eyes, and he shook his head. That turned out to be a mistake, as the movement caused his vision to spin and a massive wave of dizziness overcame him, sending him into a fit of dry heaves that ended in yet more coughing. Laying his head back on his paws, Ahote squeezed his eyes shut and sucked in several unsteady deep breaths.

Taking it slower this time, Ahote stirred again, only half aware of the voices around him. This time, he lifted his head gently and left it hang there for several moments before opening his eyes. He then let his eyes adjust, staying very still until he was sure he wasn't going to pass out again, and slowly the figures of Resin and Attican appeared, silhouetted against the fire beyond.

Gritting against the cough that threatened to return, he looked at them blearily, as though still lost. He remembered almost nothing about what happened since he had entered the cave, looking for the pack, and had no idea where he was or how he had gotten there. "R-Resin?" he said in a little lost voice, trying to make sense of the fuzz in his head. He blinked a few times, then tried to get up, only to sink back down, whimpering. The, burns across his side had stiffened up, and he could feel them tear as he moved. It would be a momentous task to get to his feet, but at least his mind was starting to clear. "Attican? What are you doing here? Where is the rest of the pack?" he asked, a little groggy still but sounding at least a bit more like himself.

For the first time, he turned his attention to the trees that burned around them, and anger rose up inside him. Quite simply, there was no more fear left in him for the monster that chased them. It had hurt him, it had hurt Resin and Attican. It had hurt his pack and his family, and he was sick of it. It didn't deserve the respect and fear it brought, and for the first time in his life, Ahote actually wished something dead. Eyes locked on the flickering flames, he bared his teeth at it, the snarl uncharacteristically vicious, "What keeps you back, monster? Are the three of us too much for you?" he said, his voice low. Perhaps the heat and smoke had addled his wits, but he was fully prepared to fight the impossible to see its life extinguished.

Lani
Female | 57 | Hunter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Lani shook the snow and ash out of her pelt, and turned her attention to the blond wolf she had rear ended. "I'm fine, pup. No worries. It takes more than my own clumsy paws to hurt this old bird," she said, her words gruff as always though her voice was grim. For the other's part though, she seemed genuinely upset at the prospect of injuring her, and that brought the ghost of a smile back to her.

A few seconds later Hrafn reappeared and she looked over to him, snorting at his guileless apology. Beyond that, she offered no reply, she was tired and worried, and surrounded by wolves she barely knew. However, leaving it be didn't seem good enough for Hrafn, and he continued with further assurances. This seemed to strike a nerve for the old Hunter, and her eyes hardened and she pulled herself up to look at him. "You're lucky you're right, but I've had enough platitudes to last a lifetime," she said grumpily, and pushed past him. Who did he think he was, anyway? Talking about her Attican like he new him. Haden't he just shown up only a couple of days ago? And now he strutted around like he owned the place.

Pacing next to the blond fea, Lani looked over to her as she introduced herself. Taking a deep breath, she let it out in a sigh as though pushing out a bit of the pointless anger that she had been holding onto. "I would say nice to meet you Pilot, but under these circumstances, I don't think that nice is quite the right word," she replied, but soon softened afterward. Such harshness wasn't natural for her, and keeping up with it was beginning to wear on her. So she smiled again, ignoring Hrafn's words behind her and skirting the stump without a second thought. "Thank you though, Pilot, for being so nice. It might be because you're new, but there are few others who wouldn't have given me a piece of their mind for being so careless," she said, reaching over to nudge her companionably with her nose.

Up ahead, the call came to pick up the pace once more, and Lani quickened her step. At least the little incident had drawn her mind away from Attican, and she was able to focus a little. Before long, they came up to a slow moving river, the water black with soot and broken ice. At first, she turned up her nose at the thought of having to cross it, but really, there was no other choice and she slogged though with the others without further complaint.

Once on the other side, she sank down to the damp ground next to Iparok, her fur black where it picked up the soot floating on the water leaving her looking more grey than white. Not sure what to do with herself, she glanced over to Pilot, then back to Iparok while he cleaned the gunk from between his toes, he nose scrunching up a bit at the thought. He must really hate having stuff between his toes to be willing to put his tongue on that, she thought, looking down at her own blackened fur. For her part, she would simply wait until she could roll in the snow, rather than risk getting whatever that was in her mouth.

Wolf
Male | 20 | Straggler
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Sitting flatly on his behind, Wolf watched the group as they approached him, not quite sure what to make of the sight. Never before had he seen such creatures work together without trying to kill one another, and from what he could make out through the smoke they seemed to actually be caring for one another. Soon, one of their group broke off and headed for him, and though concerned, he held his ground, sitting peaceably. He had learned long ago that sudden movements only excited the other inhabitants here, and he could still easily escape if needed.

However, as they drew closer, Wolf's normally ordered thoughts flew out of his head. A female, she moved with purpose and meaning, her thick coat, though dirtied from the heavy air, swayed about her like a halo. Her golden eyes were clear and bright, with a gentle curve to her ears as they perked forward towards him. She was, quite possibly, the most beautiful creature he had ever seen. What came next though, he could have never prepared himself for: She spoke to him. Never before had he heard words come from anything besides himself, and he stared, slack-jawed in wonder at her.

After a few moments of looking at her like she was the embodiment of the LIfe Mother herself come to earth, the actual meaning of her words slowly began to sink in. "I... Uh... Wolves? No..." he stammered, trying to take it all in. Wolves... He called himself Wolf, but that made it sound like more than one. He had no idea what she was talking about, but he wanted more of it. His heart felt as though it were about the leap out of his throat and he swallowed heavily. "Beast? You mean the light?" he asked, sounding positively simple. He supposed once he stopped to think about it, it did seem to act like it was alive, and he had no doubt that it was deadly. It sure scared the dickens out of him anyway. Wolf shook his head roughly, trying to clear his head of the awe that scrambled his brain before looking back to her. It was clear that she expected something of him, but he had no idea what that was. Now, he could only hope that she told him what it was, because he sure wasn't going to be guessing anytime soon.

((Ash is actually named after the type of tree. (: Resin is named after the sap.))

~|Resin|~Alpha Female|~ 40 Summers|~

She watched as Ahote began to slowly stir. His fit of rough coughing brought her closer to him as if there was something she could do about it. When he was finished and said her name, she smiled down at him, her thick tail swishing back and forth behind her. "Hey..." Lowering her muzzle, she lapped at his cheek. As he moved she happened to get a good look at the burns on his side. Seeing them made her feel ashamed. She was the reason that he was injured. Had she been able to fight through her pain rather than give in like a weakling, he wouldn't have had to come after her.

Her dark brow furrowed in self-loathing, but she would have to wait until later to berate herself. Ahote struggled to get to his feet and she pressed her side against his, letting him lean his weight upon her as he fought for balance. "Easy..." she said softly. "I've got you." She helped him out of the makeshift den and back out into the open.

Ahote snarled at the flaming wall of light and for a minute there she was sure that she'd have to tackle him to hold him back. "There is no fighting this beast. We have to run." Looking towards the far end of the clearing, she saw a small space that wasn't engulfed by the hot tendrils of light. "Come." She told them both.

With her side still pressed against Ahote's, she led both him and Attican towards the gap in the flames. The good thing about their position was that the river wasn't too far away. The rest of the pack had to go the long way around and they had rested in the clearing long enough that the trails of the monster had died down beside them. They exited the clearing just in time. Not a second after they passed into the trees, a burning pine fell down behind them, closing off the former place of refuge. Embers from the flames lit into her hip and Resin yelped aloud, pulling away from Ahote to lap at the burning wound.

A small, untouched pile of snow served to cool the tongue that she'd burned when licking the wound. More crashing and crackling erupted from behind them as trees all around the clearing fell inwards. They would now need to hurry. The beast was literally gnashing at their heels. "If you can run, I would advise you both to do so now."

~|Hrafn|~Hunter|~ 46 Summers|~

Hrafn had been lapping up a bit of the sooty water when Azaria interrupted him. There was little to no snow on this side of the river and his thirst was great, so any water was better than no water. He listened as the pup spoke of Mirage missing. Raising his head, he scanned the area, searching for the older pup. It was true, Mirage was nowhere to be seen. Hrafn had no idea how the pup had passed by him and could only come to the conclusion that it had happened when he'd switched to lead position.

Turning back to Azaria, he gave her a confident smile and licked the top of her head. "You go rest. We're going to be running again soon. I'll find him." Once more he scanned the area, this time checking on the progress of the beast that pursued them. The side of the river that they were on had already been eaten, so there was no risk here. The side that they had previously been upon was still being ravaged.

Calling some of the older wolves close, he informed them of the missing pup, his tones soft so his words couldn't be overheard. "Mirage is missing. I need to find him, but Xani isn't back yet. The best that I can do is call to her while I'm on my way. She should be able to hurry back to you and finish taking the group away from here. Don't think twice to lead everyone South if the beast shows any signs of danger towards you."

Without another word, the massive black brute dove back into the river, leaping across it in a few bounds. Shaking out his soaked coat, he took off, following their tracks back in the direction that they'd come from. He howled towards where he believed Xani to be, telling her of the missing pup. Hopefully she would be able to find the pack quickly. Nose to the ground, he retraced their steps, on the search for the black pup.

Xani
- Female - 21 - Fighter -

Xani stared at the strange male before her. He seemed almost startled by her presence, but that was to be expected when a stranger starts yammering about a beast and diseased wolves. She noticed that he was seemingly staring at her, and she took a moment to examine him as well. He was slightly smaller, or at least it seemed. His fur wasn't as thick as hers, and he almost looked unhealthy. However, thinking back, Xani remembered herself as a loner. She had looked this way once, and thus shook any bad thoughts from her mind.

Xani turned suddenly at a howl meant for her. Hrafn was simply letting her know where the pack was headed, and she nodded to herself. As the other wolf stammered, she relaxed a bit. He was confused about the disease, meaning that he hadn't been bitten. She nodded her head at the mention of the beast. "Yes, that light. It is eating the forest around us. My pack is currently fleeing. I would suggest joining us, since safety is normally in numbers."

Once more a howl rang out for the beta, and it was Hrafn informing her about a missing packmate. Mirage is missing? I didn't see that before. I know Attican is searching for Ahote and Resin... She inwardly growled at her stupidity for not noticing sooner, but quickly turned back to the stranger. "There is no time for debate. The beast grows nearer. Either join my pack and come with us, or face it alone. Just know that you are welcome, but you must follow me immediately." She paused only for a moment to let him decide before turning and taking off for her pack. While she ran quickly, she ran a bit slower than a full sprint so as not to lose the straggler.

As she ran, Xani's eyes travelled a bit. She noticed Hrafn's dark shape bounding back the way they came, and Xani silently wished him a safe return. It was only a moment before she came to a shallow river, and her eyes fell on the pack. Sighing, she leapt into the river with no hesitation and swam across, reaching the other side. A few packmates seemed relieved that she had returned, seeing as how no high-ranking wolves were there at the moment. That thought sent shivers down Xani's spine. She was nearly alone. "Everyone, please rest. I will keep and eye out and try to wait for the others as long as possible."

((Ah, that makes sense! I had always considered resin of the type you would use on a bow, or the kind used for casting, forgetting its source.))

Ahote
Male | 46 | Fighter
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

Ahote gritted his teeth and managed to climb to his feet with Resin's help, literally biting his tongue to keep from crying out. Once there though, he hung his head, panting. Each breath came in a rough rasp, and every time he moved the burns pulled even tighter across him until it felt as though he would burst from his own skin. Unlike the gash on Resin's chest, this pain was completely foreign to him. It still felt as though the burning branch sat on his skin, and he longed to sink back to the snow again, and feel its cool touch. With the sensation though, memories of what he has passed though flowed back into him, and he whimpered turning to Resin while they walked. "Resin... I couldn't find them. I got back to the cave, but then the monster came, just as you feared. I... It was all I could do to escape," he said, his voice pensive. He had failed her, an that hurt almost more than the burn on his flank. Though she thought he had come back for her, really all Ahote had done was run for his life, and that brought him back to her side. Had he been of a spiritual persuasion, he might have taken it for a sign, but as it was, he was simply grateful no matter how he ended up back with them.

Leaning heavily on Resin's side, he twisted his head back to look at Attican. The Keeper looked as though he had been though nearly as much as himself and he searched his face yearningly. He had been with them, and that means that there are at least a few survivors, and that was enough to give him hope.

Passing beneath the veil of fire, Ahote didn't even flinch when the pine crashed to the ground, his shell-shocked mind was now numb to the noise. However, the sudden loss of Resin's support at his side sends the big wolf tumbling to the ground, garnering him another face full of mud. At least the little bit of movement he had done allowed him to climb back to his feet on his own, and he stood, splay-legged while Resin soothed her own burns.

When she turned back to them though, Ahote shook his head, lifting his muzzle to look her in the eye. "No, not without you. We go together or not at all," he said in a firm voice, then looked between the other two large wolves as though daring them to challenge him. Testing his his balance, he slowly drew himself up to his full height and took a few steps on his own, only far enough to close the space between them. Standing close with one on either side of him, he reached over to touch his nose to Attican's cheek, then hers in turn and then took a deep breath of the super-heated air. "Ready?" he asked, preparing himself to move once more.

Wolf
Male | 20 | Straggler
>>>–––———<•>———–––<<<

There was no doubt that the fea in front of him was larger than Wolf, and from the way she carried herself, much stronger. Whatever he might have been, the sickness that ravaged his youth and stole his memory, combined with the long years of scavenging had left him a physical wreck. Still though, he looked at her with clear, clever eyes and even with the chaos that raged about them, she had his full and undivided attention.

He however, did not have hers, and before she continued another howl sounded across the blacked forest, and she turned to listen. Wolf did too, for the first time placing the song that wavered in the air with the word, and with it his appreciation grew. She spoke again, and a smile spread across his face. These words: wolves, howl, pack... They meant something, and not just any old something, they meant something to him. He could feel it deep in his heart as though they tugged at something just out of reach of his memory. Beyond that, she was actually asking him to go with her. The little lost soul in him rejoiced, and he was ready to follow her straight back into the burning maw of the beast if only to hear her speak again. Before he could reply though, another howl came to them, and this one seemed to worry the fea. Someone was missing, and the one who called was going after them.

Hearing her anxious words, Wolf quickly nodded. "Of course, I've had enough 'alone' to last a lifetime," he replied, his sentence holding a strange emphasis on the word as though it were a thing rather than simply a condition. Anxious with anticipation, he eagerly followed her back towards the direction of the others, his mind brimming with questions. Just how many of these beautiful creatures were there, and did they all talk like this, or was it just because she was the leader that she had words? And if they did, would the rest of the 'pack' speak with him as well? All his life he had been filled with wonder and unanswered thoughts, and now he would finally be able to ask them.

Light as a feather on his feet, he bounded after the female, until they came to another little river. This part of it seemed to be a bit shallower and slower moving than where he had crossed earlier, and he followed her into the freezing water and black slush without a second thought. Upon reaching the opposite shore though, he was completely unprepared for the sight that awaited him. Here and there, tired beasts lay resting and speaking in hushed tones. Wolves, he corrected himself. They were wolves, the same as he was Wolf. Never before had he considered to be of the same kind as those raving beasts he occasionally encountered, but suddenly it all clicked. The one who had come to him had spoken of a sickness, could it be that this was the way they were supposed to be, and all the others were merely ill?

Staring at them with wide eyes, Wolf suddenly found himself shy and wary, unsure of what to do. Thus, he stuck close to the Xani's tail, following her about as she gave instructions to the others. Occasionally, he would peer around her to look at the others they passed, marveling at the variety of colors of their pelts, and the way they took comfort in one another. It was all so much, and his wide eyes struggled to take in every little part as a whole.
