I'm getting a new baby! And my step dad is as well! (Call him M)

The black masked is the one I am thinking about getting (depending on how he is when I meet him on the 28th) Image
M is still trying to decide between the two blues, he probably won't pick until he's met them both so who knows which he will get. (Also depends on his temperament)

DarkVoodoo, how cute are they!

Nancy
&
Nico

two additions.. that no one on my fb shall know about until later. Nancy is just a small gal, not a dwarf unfortunately. But while she's small, I shall adore and cherish it.

NOT breeders. Will most likely stay with me until they're out of quarantine, then I am considering finding their forever homes.

I was given both for Christmas by friends, so they'll probably actually stay lol..

I mean, what better than a rat for Christmas?!

Nico is a russian blue agouti mismark hooded rex bub, while Nancy is a russian blue mismark hooded (with mismark ribbon blaze) bub. I love 'em both!

I need help guys. So my baby girl slide has formed a lump under her left arm pit/left side. And when I say lump I mean it big... I've seen it in rats before but as slide is my first rat I don't know what to do. She seems happy enough and is still doing her usual behavior and stuff... but im just concerned... is there anything I can do to help it go away or will I need to look at the worst case scenario? :'( so worried and don't know what to do.

Would you be able to post a pic of it? Is there anyway you can take her to the vet to get her checked?

Well, I have rats but im no expert in their illnesses. This is just a guess, but it could just be a wart-type thing or something like that ;) if Slide isn't showing any signs of illnesses then it should be alright, but just on the safe side I would visit a vet just to make sure it isn't serious. :)
Just don't worry, that's the worst thing to do.

This isn't my pic because I don't have one on hand, but that's what is looks like kinda, but Slide's is a little bit bigger (and less noticeable because she's white where the lump is.)

I will look at taking her to the vet, but I just don't want them to suggest anything rash.

It looks like a tumor. A vet would have to look at it. It could be cancerous but It could also not be. From what I know rats are very pron to tumors. With all the rats i have 3 ended up with reoccurring tumors. None of them were cancer. I think if you bring her to the vet before it gets too big she should be fine. The vet will probably want to do surgery to remove it. If you dont have the money for the surgery and the tumor isnt bothering her. If she's acting normal, eating, drinking, doesnt seem in pain, ect. she should be ok. But once it starts to affect her she would need to see a vet.

Hi Oddly! As above people said, the best is to take her to the vet :)

But I have three questions, first how old is she? is she neutered? How fast does the lump grows?

I ask because I've read mammary tissue in rats extend to their armpit and shoulder too... My rat Pepper at 2 and a half years old developed one in his armpit too. I could (thanks God) afford have it surgically removed. Tests reveled mammary tissue on the lump, so even for a male rat, it was mammary tumor, not cancerous though ;)

The things to be more worried about are that the lump is cancerous and that it gets keeping big is more difficult to have it removed, it consumes the rat's body resources and makes difficult for the rat to move and live normally.

But this is my experience and what I read... Please do take her to the vet :) good luck and say hi to Slide from Pepper and me :D

I will be looking at taking her to the vet soon, but im not sure if I can afford surgery...

I got slide on the 22nd January 2012, so she's almost 2 years old. She isn't neutered either. The lump isn't growing at the moment from what I can tell, but it did appear pretty quickly to the point where I only just noticed it the day of posting first here... I do believe it got that way over a week, maybe week and 1/2. But I cannot say that for certain.

For now I have a feeling I will be taking her to the vet, deciding to hold off on surgery for now (as long as it isn't cancerous) and hopefully letting her continue to live her life as she does and keep an eye on her to make sure she's eating and drinking normally (which at the moment she is).

Ill see if I can get a picture of her for you guys, it just gets difficult downloading from phone onto photobucket then posting XD.

I'll tell her you and Pepper said hi!
