Just got back from seeing the new movie.
And it was epic, as expected, plus more. <333 ;u;
Naturally, I had to scamper over here to tell you all what I thought about it, but I hate starting off with the bad, so I'll start off with the things I liked. For those of you who have yet to read the books, this may contain some spoilers 'n such. So just meander your way around my post, and you'll be fine. eue
---I found it quite interesting and intreguing to see Gandalf's perspective and where PJ thought he went and what he did. The whole Dol Guldur mysteries and lore, along with the Necromancer's coming into being again.. Wonderfully done. I realize that none of this was in the book, but it's an eye-opener and some good prequel material.
---Also, I was somewhat and yet pleasently surprised with the first scene in Bree at the Prancing Pony. 'Twas a welcome and good way to both mix in prequel with sequel, if you get my meaning.
---I appreciate how they drew out Bard and his family a bit more. I know that I've already spoken of this before I watched the movie, and now that I've watched it, I'm quite pleased. He has an adorable family, and though he isn't as "ninja" as Legolas may be, he's quite witty and I love his actor-character match. Go grab that arrow and kill that dragon, boy! >u<
---Amazing, dumbfounding, fantastical scenery, as always! And the music... ;A; GORGEOUS. I'm glad that I've already asked for the soundtrack for Christmas. <3 Being a violinist in an orchestra, I particularly appreciate and enjoy the talent and skill with which the music was made and played. Very pleased with the musical themes throughout the movie.
---Finally, hats off to everyone for the scene with Bilbo and Smaug.. And with Smaug in particular. I noticed they didn't follow the book to-the-T, but Smaug was glorious, Bilbo as hilarious and quite the character as always, and the halls of Erebor were so awe-inspiring! Truly remarkable, I cannot even put it to words at the moment!
Loads more I loved, but I won't bore you with them all. c; Moving on.
---I was particularly disappointed when it came to the Beorn scenes. ;-; The way that Gandalf introduces the dwarves in the book was one of my favorite parts, to be honest, and I merely shook my head when watching the movie at the scene where they practically broke into Beorn's house uninvited and unwelcome, let alone being chased by Beorn himself. .-. The scene could have been less serious... but then again, I suppose they were trying to draw the audience back into the chases in the movie. Still, I wished that they had drawn out the Beorn scenes some more.. some different way.
---I almost laughed out loud at how much Thranduil acted like a spoiled brat. I mean, I get his character being prideful, domineering, and such, but I could constantly imagine him doing this *majestic hair toss* or *sitting on his throne with legs crossed and wearing sunglasses, saying, "Fabulous." I just think he acted that side of Thranduil out a little too much. 0uo I don't know. What do you think?
---I could almost have fallen for the little love-triangle we've got going on there between Kili, Legolas, and miss Tauriel, being the emotional girl that I am. What girl couldn't. c; But as I've been over the whole Dwarf+Elf thing, it's just not realistic. That, or Tauriel is crazy and the most confused elf I've ever seen or heard of. xD So, honestly, it's a love-hate thing for me.. So, I have this cute art-idea in mind that I think you will all enjoy seeing once I finish it. Lots of art ideas running through my head, but this one is particularly amusing at the moment. But this is besides the point. xD
The movie was very well done, all in all. I know (as I'm a writer myself) that it can be quite difficult, when writing both books and movies, to play out the middle part of your book/movie. It's there where you have to hold a tight grip on your audience, to keep them on their toes. Though we may not appreciate a lot of the added-on material that was there, you have to admit that it was quite suspenseful and gripping. You could barely pass a scene without thinking, "Oh, but what about ___? What happens next?" That's what may have been needed, and that's what we were given; and thus the movie was quite well done in that respect. They leave you hanging, indeed. c;
Expect fan-art soon. .__.
