Whoever thought up the terminology didn't really consider how it feels to have illiterate used as an insult and probably should have at least considered the definition.

Personally, despite the fact that Tauriel is not in the book, and she's kind of just there in the movie and the love interest thing seems kind of forced.
Her point is to make us more sympathetic towards Kili. Because those who have read the books know what happen to him and Fili and Thorin. And to make the movie not a total guyfest.
As for your thing about bilbo solving all the problems, he kind of does that in the book, it's in the source material. So Eh, I don't have a big problem with it.
It was the big overblown barrel scene and the stuff in the mountain and the fact that they cut out my freaking favourite little poem/song thing from the book, pulled the side stuff to the front, making it seem like it's a prequal to LotR rather than the hobbit, the book I adored when I was a kid. I like the first film more, it was more hobbity, rather than LotRy
Seriously
the hobbit the book to me as much as I remember at least is
The dinner party at bag end complete with the songs
riddles in dark
and the spiders of mirkwood complete with the attacop song.
