CHAPTER TWENTY SPOILER ALERT!"Hawk? Is that you?"
I flexed my claws and prepared to go down fighting.
I had come this far, and I didn't intend to stop now.
Bracing myself, I...
"Run! Run Raven! And don't stop until you reach HQ!"
"You're not a friend, Angel, you're
just a coward who's afraid to do what's
right!"
DUN DUN DUN!
please bare in mind that this is going to be a very important chapter!
---
I sighed. This was not going to be easy, but I was getting a slight idea of what to do. As slow as I possibly could I crawled closer and closer to the cage. I edged past the dogs and towards Raven. As quietly as I could I tapped on the steel bar with my claw. Raven's head slowly lifted and she looked around inquisitively, wondering what was going on. She had obviously caught my scent because the first thing she said was,
"Hawk? Hawk is that you?" She had asked, a little too loudly.
"Raven, be quiet, I'm going to get you out of here," I whispered, taking a flair pen out of my wrist band and preparing to light it.
Unfortunately, just before I managed to, Chase turned around. The hellish dog looked me in the eye, gave an evil smile, and came closer. Raven looked up and I told her to stay back in the cage and to not get involved. I flexed my claws and prepared to go down fighting. I had come this far and I didn't intend to stop now. I felt saliva drip down my muzzle as I snarled, almost tasting this dog's blood in my mouth. I enjoyed this feeling; the feeling of victory. Not that I had won the battle yet, but I had a strange urge in my gut telling me that I couldn't loose. Well I must have been overly confident because just as I had braced myself to lunge, Angel jumped in front of me. My eyes went wide and I stared straight into her cold, expressionless face. I wondered why the hell she hadn't attempted to flaw me yet.
I growled.
"Not changed your mind yet, then?" She asked stubbornly.
"And why would I side with you, traitor!" I yowled, pouncing. Surprisingly, it wasn't her that fought back, it was the dog that had almost blown Texas up. Falcon. I was shocked to see him after that day on the battle field. I thought I had been hallucinating when I saw the skull on his hip; when I saw him. But there it was, clear as day standing right in front of me - proof that dying didn't always mean floating up to heaven. No, just plummeting down into hell!
I was now pinned on the ground, with a large malamute biting at my neck. I growled, doing my best to try and throw him off. I writhed around on the cave floor but he wouldn't budge, and then I remembered my claws. My steel, un-beatable claws. Growling, I smiled. He tilted his head wondering what I was so happy about when I was as good as dead. He chuckled.
"Given up already?" And I shook my head.
"Too late to get out of this now!" I replied sarcastically, and raked my claws across his chest, which he had stupidly exposed to me. Yowling in agony, he leapt back, blood falling in it's gallons to the floor and mixing the black of my fur with it's hellish red.
He snarled at me, enraged at my decision to fight back.
"You should have followed Angel when you had the chance. You would have been good with us, Hawk," I tilted my head. Angel and Falcon were together? But that meant that Raven had a- a father...
"Snap her neck!" Falcon yowled to the two Anatolian shepherds, who immediately leapt towards me. I had no choice but to jump to the side, and even then I was cornered. But at least I was near Raven. I pulled the flair pen out of my ankle band and struck it across the bars, clearing a hole for Raven to escape through.
"Raven," I whispered. "I'll shield you so you can get close enough to the exit. Then run," I said, hoping she wouldn't decide to try and help me fight. She nodded, and I sighed thankfully.
My ears folded back and my fur bristled as I held Raven in my shadow. She followed behind me cautiously as I defended her from the two dogs. Out of the corner of my eye I watched Falcon nuzzle Angel's neck and then walk away with her leaning on him. So he had been evil all along.
Storm lunged at me with his sharp, razor-like teeth, and got way too close to my neck for a moment. I snarled and slashed at him with my claws, but I missed by a mile. It was then I realized we were close enough to the exit for Raven to escape. Then I pounced on Storm and yelled over to my friend,
"Run Raven, run! And don't stop until you reach HQ!". Storm flung me off and gave chase, whilst his sister (hey, don't tell me I'm the only one who noticed the irony there?") leapt on top of me. She used her robotic leg to block everything I threw at her, and in the end I was the one who ended up being hurt. I snarled as I did my best to pick myself up from the dirt, my legs shaking as I lifted my battered body - which with all the injuries I had sustained seemed like it weighed a ton. Angel turned back to watch as Chase bit into my neck, and I narrowed my eyes at her.
"You're not a friend Angel, you're just a coward who's afraid to do what's right!" I yelled. She just laughed mercilessly, her eyes bright.
"I guess I'll be seeing you in hell then," She replied. I barked at her, infuriated by her decision to leave me.
"Get back here Angel you coward! Get back here and fight!" But she didn't listen, she just turned away as if I didn't exist and carried on walking into the blackness of a cave that seemed to go on for an eternity.
It was at that point that I broke, I went into a frenzy. I slashed and scraped at Chase's stomach but she wouldn't budge. She just sat on top of me with her teeth in my neck like a great tree that had fallen onto me and pierced my skin. I thought I would never get out, I thought it was the end until another two dogs came barging in and leapt on my opponent. Kasai bowled the shepherd off of me and began to fight, whilst Jay helped me up. I couldn't believe it, they'd followed me. How had they followed me without giving themselves away? I was losing it.
I lifted my body out of the dirt and smiled.
"Thanks," I looked at Kasai. "But how did you get here? Have you seen Raven?"
"No, why?" She said. My heart sunk.
"I let her escape, but there was a dog chasing... I don't know what happened from there,"
"Oh, well we did see another dog- but he attacked us so Kasai flawed him and more or less ripped his guts out,"
Phew. At least she's safe then. I looked over to Kasai who was now ferociously battling three dogs - Chase, a Pitt-bull and Ruki - the last wolf I wanted to see right now. I looked at Jay.
"You take the Pitt-bull, and I'll take Ruki. Once they're on the ground, we'll leg it. OK?" Jay nodded, and then I launched myself at Ruki. I put all of my weight into it and pushed her to the ground. Kasai had already gotten Chase on her back, and we were just waiting for Jay. She was struggling a little, so Kasai leapt onto the Pitt-bulls stomach and we ran. Out of the tunnels and into the open- and when we left I couldn't help but notice the guard-dog sprawled out in a pool of it's own blood. I had to admit it - Kasai didn't mess about.
Eventually we were home free - as far away from the the barn as we could be. Each of us exchanged glances, and then stuck our noses into the dirt. We tried our best to pick up Raven's scent but just couldn't. I was surprised to find the scent of another dog, though. We followed the trail until we bumped into a Border Collie. She was tall and lean, and by the looks of things hadn't eaten in a while. She tilted her head when she saw me, and then turned around and headed for the hills. She was a meter or two in front of us, but if anyone, Jay could catch her.
"After her!" I hollered, ordering the others to run. I could tell that nobody else did, but I couldn't help it and for some reason was beginning to question my own authority. I guess Kelly shouting at me had knocked me back a little, but it was no surprise to me because I can see now that I was totally out of order. I shouldn't have disrupted the assembly - but sometimes the superior dogs forget that we aren't at nursery school and that we know how to behave properly now - and I mean, I was right wasn't I? And when I get back to HQ with Raven, they're gonna realize (well, not to smug or anything) that pretty much all of the time my instincts point me in the right direction; they're the ones barking up the wrong tree, not me.

Thanks everyone! I'll write as much as I can whilst i'm at school, but just to keep everyone occupied i'll make the gallery.
EDIT: The gallery link is on the front page, and now I have added a description for Taura in chapter thirteen (completely forgot to do that lol)
"Taura was a beautiful brown Akita dog, with blue eyes and long, silky fur. She was the envy of most male dogs in HOWLS, and I sometimes felt jealous."
