I'm not sure if one/both are my daemons, or if I'm just insane. Help please?

A dæmon is basically an imaginary friend, your companion. It's not a separate voice or entity, and though practice and much "projection" (or imagining talking to your dæmon) can make it seem more separate and real, overall its still a part of you which you have total control over.

If a dæmon is insulting you it's likely a sign that you're feeling insecure about yourself and therefore your dæ is illustrating those emotions by verbally harassing you. A dæmon is simply your thoughts in second-person. (For example instead of you thinking "I feel like such a loser." your dæmon will say, "You're such a loser" etc.)

You have total control over your internal dialogue, so fill your mind with happy thoughts! Take the time to compliment yourself and focus on your positive traits. Work this personality into yourself and your dæmon will reflect your positive and happy thoughts.

Now if you genuinely believe the voice you're hearing isn't one you have control over, you're likely looking at something outside the realm of dæmonism, and you might want to seek some type of therapy or medical advice.

Hope this helps! =)

You're dæmon is like an imaginary friend. Well, it is, but it's also your conscience.
It's whatever you want it to be! For some reason, Vee has stayed as a caiman for a year now, only shifting just for a change of pace.
Of course, it's my call. I can make her do whatever I please.

I had once asked, "What is a daemon?" (It was around 2 years ago, on this very thread.) Someone answered me so brilliantly, that I just HAVE to quote their post for you.

Comanche wrote:There are basically two parts to daemonism - the companion, and the personality-typing system. Mar is my imaginary friend, more or less. I project (imagine) him usually some kind of animal, who follows me around throughout the day, and have let him grow as a character in my mind, so that his personality and mine aren't necessarily the same, and he has his own thoughts and opinions on things.

(I'm the cool one.)

It's our relationship that makes up the companionship part of daemons - they can be anything from a mentor to a partner in crime, it's really whatever you feel you need out of the relationship.

The personality-typing is completely different - in this part, we analyze animal behaviors, making them into metaphors for human personalities, and striving to find the animal that fits us best. For instance, New Guinea Singing Dogs are pariah dogs, meaning that they don't really have a close relationship with humans in their natural habitat and mostly fend for themselves. This is a metaphor for my independence. They're also not tied down to a particular place in the wild, traveling between multiple den sites - this shows my restlessness with staying in one place for too long, and my preference for instead having little havens which I can go to as the others become boring for me.

While we say that our daemon takes this form, this is actually just a turn of phrase for saying that that form fits us - because your daemon is your imaginary companion, they can take any form they want, even a pot noodle, regardless of what form fits you. :]

Finding your best fitting form takes years of research, and when you're of the right age (17 to 25, thereabouts) and feel you can see your personality staying the same into the future, you usually settle on a form you've given a lot of thought to. I'm currently stable, meaning I've been a NGSD for a long time and I see myself being one for a long time, but I'm not quite ready to claim settledom yet.

A good place to start is to do a Reverse Analysis, where you flesh out points of your personality so that you can get suggestions by posting a thread in the RA section of TDF, which is the main daemon community that we're a small branch of. :] Though, as a warning, RAs can take a week or more to do well - we really like a lot of detail and examples.

On the topic of settling, here's what someone else once told me.

Shiro ☆ wrote:One; daemons don't settle. Daemons are 'mental constructs' or, in layman's terms, imaginary friends. The form of a daemon doesn't settle because they are not limited to being only one thing. That is to say, you can imagine them as anything you like and you could still be settled. This is because it is the personality which settles. Which takes me on to my second point,

Two; settledom is not permanent in any real sense of the word. Settledom is essentially a period of long-lasting stability which occurs after we have matured, which is why it is commonly accepted and psychologically probable that we cannot settle until we are at least 18, probably older. This is due to the fact that our personalities are likely well enough formed at that point, and we are able to maintain those traits for extended periods of time. The generally accepted belief is that settled is something we can call ourselves when we are adults and have been stable for at least six months, more likely a year.

Three; settling is not something that has to happen. There are many people out there with disorders that prevent their personalities from stabilising. This means that, yes, there are plenty of people who do not settle in their life times.

Oh noes, this thread has really died. :c Well, I'll have a go at reviving it, because I have a few questions for any daemians that are still around... somewhere... -looks under desk- Where you all go?

If you are settled or stable, does you daemon stick to the form it's supposed to be or not? How do you feel about your daemon taking forms as other animals, and is there any animal forms you can't stand? Also, does your daemon ever take the form of an inanimate object or a mythical creature?

And, while I'm at it, I'll go ahead and reintroduce my daemon, because he's changed a bit since I was last here. He is now called Karbaenion - though that's kind of subject to change. I change my mind a lot. I usually call him Kar or Baen (he like Baen the best because he thinks it sounds like a spy name xP). He has an awesome sense of humour and an almost equally good sense of random... some of the stuff he says, omg. As far as form-finding goes, I did some more hardcore research into it and I found that Scottish wildcat is actually the absolute perfect form for him. Which is kind of weird since the first time we chose that form it was based on minimal research - we just liked the form. c:

My daemon is not settled...and I dunno if he's stable. He pretty much stays to being a Cougar, Barn Owl, Raccoon, and German Shepherd - though Cougar is my personal favorite. He changes into a tiny little mouse sometimes, as well as a Dachshund. Once he turned into a bat - which I hugely disliked - as well a penguin - which I also disliked. He's never taken the form of an inanimate object, but he has taken the form of a mythological creature, twice - once he turned into a unicorn (I really didn't like this one), and once he turned into a burning phoenix (meh, this one wasn't my favorite, but I didn't really hate it).

I haven't done HUGE amounts of research into it, but from what I've seen on online quizzes is that he should be some sort of swan or goose, which I don't think fits him properly. I have looked on one forum online, and am currently trying to find out which animal will be the one best suited for him, so...yeah, still looking into it....but from what I've found already, Cougar and Barn Owl seem to be good choices, as well as Dachshund. :)

I'm going to answer my own questions, yay. xP

If you are settled or stable, does you daemon stick to the form it's supposed to be or not?
For the most part, yes. Though we do like to experiment with other random forms. Like, yesterday when we were in town he decided to be a giraffe because of some remark I made... something about height. But he couldn't get through any doors, so he had to knock it off in the end. It was pretty funny. Over the past few days his animal forms that I can remember have been: jackdaw, earwig, pipistrelle bat, siberian tiger, african wild dog, cheetah, snow leopard, peregrine falcon, giraffe and of course wildcat.

How do you feel about your daemon taking forms as other animals, and is there any animal forms you can't stand?
I don't mind him taking random forms. It's fun. For me it would be canine forms that I don't like for him - I love canines, but they just don't suit him at all. He's much more cat-like. And I am too, in a daemon-y type way. I'm also not a big fan of forms as small prey animals like rodents. It's just... not right. Overall his settled form is definately my favourite.

Also, does your daemon ever take the form of an inanimate object or a mythical creature?
Does magical flying toaster count? Because he's been being that a lot lately. I swear he is so random most of the time. First he was just a toaster, then the next day he decided to fly over my shoulder as a winged toaster. He said something about it, but I really can't remember. I think he's trying to annoy me, but I'm already past the point where I can be annoyed by him. He's made me immune to that. But I'm usually okay with inanimate forms. Like, when we're driving I'll sometimes project him as either a black motorbike or a lime-green Lamborghini - or at least when he's not on my knee inside the car. They're pretty cool forms, if I say so myself. As for mythical creatures, we haven't really tried anything out except for dragon. He's a dragon quite a lot though, especially when I'm in a bad mood - big, black and spiky with glowing red eyes.

Oh, and when it comes to form finding, don't trust the quizzes. They're probably not accurate. If you're serious about finding the right form, I'd suggest doing a reverse analysis and posting it on The Daemon Forum. Form-finding is a lot of hard work though, and you have to be brutally honest with yourself. It's a pretty draining thing. But that's only if you're doing it hardcore like I was. :3

Yes. I don't see the point of knowing your true form and not projecting as such, but that's just me.

How do you feel about your daemon taking forms as other animals, and is there any animal forms you can't stand?
We both don't find it necessary. Except for "shrinking" for tight car rides, it's usually unnecessary. Can't stand "flat faced" cat forms (back when we were unsettled) and certain insects and a lot of primates.

Also, does your daemon ever take the form of an inanimate object or a mythical creature?
    99.9% plain old secretary bird.

    My answers are boring, heh.

When I did consider myself Stable, Hexperus was always a red fox. He's usually a red fox.

How do you feel about your daemon taking forms as other animals, and is there any animal forms you can't stand?
I think that whatever form he chooses to take is fine. We both have a thing about beetles. We don't really like beetles. Acrually, if he wants to be Paul McCartney, it's fine with me.

Also, does your daemon ever take the form of an inanimate object or a mythical creature?
Yeah. He likes being a coffee cup and anything from Harry Potter.

For the most part. He's only been stable twice, both times only lasting about two weeks. I think he's a stable caracal now, he just told me "I don't feel like changing anymore", we aren't sure if that means just for now, or forever.

How do you feel about your daemon taking forms as other animals, and is there any animal forms you can't stand?
I HATE insect and spider forms. Hate them. He was an insect only once before, he was a praying mantis, and that was only for a few minutes. He doesn't take human form. Ever. That's my least favorite. He has never and will never take a human form, we both think it's too unnatural for us.

Also, does your daemon ever take the form of an inanimate object or a mythical creature?
No. We stick to canonical animals. I've heard others talk about their daemons wearing hats and stuff too, but we don't do that. We stick to cliche plain animal form.

(I haven't posted here in like a year, sorry! BTW my daemon's name is Vivatma. Nice to re-meet you all!)
