Shadow let out a gaping yawn. He was exhausted and hungry, but there wasn't any food left in his little room besides his emergency can-stash. Reluctantly, he sat up, flung his thick blue blanket off the couch, and slid into his boots. Normally, he'd wait till daylight to go and get food, but his hunger was keeping him awake. The night had it's pros and cons, anyways. The dark shielded you from being seen, but it also kept you from seeing those coming after you. With his drowsiness still calling him back to the couch, Shadow threw on some jeans and a black T-shirt that had a hole in the right sleeve. Lastly, he grabbed his M-64A and back pack. Feeling his way through the pitch black apartment room, he found the doorknob and stepped out into the illy lit hallway. After locking the door with three different locks, he crept down the stairs and out of the dingy apartment building silently.
He'd already decided that he'd hit the convenience store down the street first, and if that was looted-out already, he'd go to Tinxa's Grocery. Shadow's dark blue eyes reflected the full moon and the flicker of worry in them. Full moon. D@mn. Just what I needed. Sticking to the shadows of the buildings and keeping an eye on the deserted streets, he quickly made it to the convenience store. He tensed when he saw the shattered glass shards glittering in the moon light on the pavement and the jagged hole where the window had been. That wasn't like that yesterday. Ten times more cautious, he got down on the ground and flattened himself against the wall next to the broken window, listing for the signs of somebody in the shop. Besides the cicadas, the night was deadly quite. Then Shadow nearly screamed himself when a crash and a yelp shattered the silence. Slowly, he slid his M-64A from laying across his back to in his hands and ready to shoot if he needed to. There's definitely somebody in there...

Rain gently glanced around, eyes caught by the dimming yellow light of a dying, battery-powered emergency fluorescent near the back of the store. She began walking towards it, the nearly nonexistant sound of her shoe soles tapping against the floor magnified by the silence. She slunk along the edge of the refridgerated section, noting that most all the alcohol had "liberated" from that part of the store. She pulled open the door, looking over the bottles for the characteristic green color of a Mountain Dew. The tick of claws against tiles and a low growl forced her heart to race as she pulled back the hammer on her pistol. She turned around, heading towards the light once more, but soon horrified by the sight before her. A body slumped over the check-out counter, maimed and mutilated beyond the point of recognition. Her hands shook as she studied the bites that had taken chunks out of virtually every part of the corpse.
The sound of paws had circled to behind her, looking over her shoulder, blue eyes frantic. She turned on heel, pressing back against the waist-high counter. Her left hand held onto her right wrist in a dangerously tight grip, choking up on the gun's grip. The scent of decay and rot hit her like a tidal wave as she nervously scanned her line of vision. Finally coming into the aura of the lightbulb was the source of the noise. 'Feral dog.' she realized with a start. The emergency exit was blocked, that meant she had to get back to the front of the store. She edged forward, slamming her palms against a shelf, the clatter attracting the attention of the animal. She ran towards the very back of the store, planning on taking the long route around it. Maybe she could get out without shooting. She had assumed the canine was a loner (and possibly rabid), but assume makes an ass out of me and you.
Another of the ranks of dogs who had adapted and survived stood in the same aisle, licking at at something spilled on the floor. And just a few yards from the new threat, freedom. The exit was right there. She started to walk backwards, but only made it a few steps before the growling came from behind her again. The dog's buddy seemed to just notice her presence, pinning its ears back and stalking toward her, that rumbled coming from somewhere deep in its throat. "[censored].." was the only word that came to mind as her hands refused to respond to her pleas to raise the handgun and fire.

Shadow was like a statue as he listened to the person in the store. He heard the faint woosh of one of the freezer doors opening, but then closing. Clicking. Quite steps that turned into louder steps, a crash, rapid clicking, then a growl that sounded like it was exactly behind the wall Shadow was leaning against. He swallowed and slowly rose to his feet. He could feel his heart pounding as the low, rumbling growl turned to a snarl. Then he heard the person he'd been listing to cuss. Shadow waited a few minutes longer, trying to hear exactly where the growling animals where. When he heard the rumbling again, from directly behind him, he could imagine where it was standing.
He hoped that whoever was in there wouldn't shoot him. He desperately needed to get in there and get something to eat. Taking in a deep breath, Shadow whipped around the corner and shot the dog standing there right in the head. It was exactly where he'd thought it would be, standing in front of the broken window. He looked up and saw a girl holding a gun, and more importantly, the other rabid dog behind her.

Rain strangled back a scream as a shot sounded, immediately raising her hands to protect her face, in spite of the futility against gunfire. She checked through the gap between her fingers and caught a glimpse of the dead dog, dropping her arms to her side. In a few split seconds, she decided on her game plan. Run like Hell, hope nothing runs faster.
She started her mad dash towards whoever this person was, a part of her questioning her decision to trust him, dropping her small firearm behind in her haste. The dog was biting furiously at her heels, almost close enough to take a bite out of her ankle. But she was within a few feet of the new person, a male by the appearance. "Don't shoot, don't shoot, don't shoot." she dropped to the floor and slid like a runner would to home plate. "SHOOT!" she commanded as she skidded to a halt a short distance behind Shadow.
She cast a glance to her right, trying to determine if the canines had anymore allies to take of.
[ Epic fail. xD ]

Shadow saw the girl jump and thought she was a goner when the dog nearly took her legs off, but then she began to run. A small part of his brain thought that for a millisecond, she was going to kill him. She was going to run up to him and shoot him, or hit him over the head with her gun. He was as good as dead. But then Shadow saw she had a scared look on her face, not a physcomaniac-mass-murder look on her face, she had dropped her gun, and was, well, yelling "don't shoot" over and over. Then he saw the dog, it's toothy mouth snapping right at her legs, foam flying from it's mouth. Time seemed to slow down. He held his breath to steady his aim and pulled the trigger. With a ear-splitting bang, it collapsed to the floor like a puppet that had had it's strings cut. With his face still completely calm, he took a step forward and listened. No more clicking of nails, growling, or barking. I think that's the last of them... After he'd looked down all the aisles, his shoulders slackened with relief and he turned back to the girl, wondering who she was.

Rain muttered to herself as she began digging through her bag in a frantic quest for hand sanitizer. That floor was far from clean. She finally found the small travel sized bottle near the bottom, beneath a CD by some annoying band called Green Day, that she believed should have died a century ago. But technically it did.. right? Whatever. She squeezed the contents from the bottle onto her hands, rubbing the foul, alcoholic smelling liquid all the way up her arms to her elbows as a doctor prepping for surgery. She dropped the half-empty bottle back in her messenger bag, crouching and studying the back of her pants leg to see if the dog had gotten a hold of her. Relieved to see no teeth marks in the denim, she unfolded to her full height, returning her attention to the guy before her.
She partially thought she recognized him, though his name was held captive somewhere in the depths of her mind. And so in her bold state of confusion, she asked: "Who the Hell are you?"
---
Onix continued staring at the door for a minute or so, his hand choking up of the grip of his gun. He turned on heel to head back up the stairs, deciding to leave the mystery for another day. Or at least until the morning came and wouldn't be scared out of his wits. A metallic clatter made him stop in his tracks, he looked over his shoulder at a dark form sitting in the middle of the room. He turned with his 9mm raised, safety off and finger on the trigger. He stared down at the beady eyes that glared right back at him with a certain amount of distaste. "I thought I got rid of you last week." The furry grey and black thing sat up on its hind legs, a high pitched sound of cooing and chittering coming somewhere from the depths of the throat. "Damn raccoon." he grumbled, leveling the sights and wondering why he hadn't shot it seven days ago.
Because bullets ricochet off hard surfaces like concrete.
"[censored].." he stated simply upon remembrance of this fact, jamming the pistol back into the holster on his right hip. He walked toward it cautiously, reaching out. "Come on, out of my basement." With a hiss and a baring of its teeth, he retreated back towards the stairs, raising his hands in surrender. "Fine, fine, you win." A part of him was plotting revenge on the creature, and another part of him wondered why he was talking to it.

"Err..." Shadow stared back at the girl stupidly for a moment, "I'm... Shadow. Shadow Wolff." The girl didn't seem familiar, he'd never met anyone with long reddish hair like her's. Shadow guessed that she was about his age, but she was taller than him. Shadow put his hand on the back of his neck like he always did when he was nervous and his gaze dropped to the floor. He slung his gun back over his shoulder and picked his backpack up off the ground. The lightness of backpack reminded his why he'd came here in the first place, "I, uh... sorry about that. I just came here to get something to eat." Shadow felt kind of bad when he looked down at the dead dogs on the floor. Of course, they where rabid and trying to kill people, but he'd always been a dog lover. Not like that matters anymore. he thought. I haven't seen a dog in years that didn't want to eat me. Ever since his old dog, Blue, died when he was 13, he'd felt vulnerable. Blue could smell and hear intruders, kill things if he needed to. Now Shadow lived all alone in an abandoned apartment building, relying on his weak human senses to wake himself up if anbody came. It kind of freaked him out to know that rabid, blood thirsty dogs like those could just break in and attack him in the middle of the night. He didn't want to even think about it.
