For a "design my character a mate contest," is it reasonable to make it in the rules that you get to keep all entrants as characters,if they don't win? Or is it better to offer to pay for the ones you want to keep?

Don't keep them, it's a total jerk move when people do that. Have 3-4 places, and you keep those. If you want to keep other entrants, offer to buy them off of them for a fair price. Just make sure the prizes you are offering don't have huge gaps between them. Like 08 vr for 1st then like '10 uncommon for second. That's also a jerk move, trying to get more entries for little cost. People wont enter unless they think they're going to get a good prize, even if they just get third.

A lot of people complain about not getting any entrants, and then complain even MORE when they have to give a vr away to someone whose art they werent happy with. The problem is always narrowed down to one thing: BEING CHEAP. If you want good entrants, give good prizes!

Art comp's aren't the place to be cheap and try to rip artists off. Baiting and switching (Having like a sunjewel "grand prize" that they say they might not give away and then a event rare of miniscule value in comparison as first. they lure artists in with a sunjewel only to give them some way lesser valued dog in the end) is a huge problem in some art contests and I hate it, it really should be against the rules. I only agree with grand prizes if they're done well. (Like having a non-coon grand but something like a green sorbet for 1st)

If you don't have enough rare pets to offer a fair tier system of prizes, don't hold a contest. You'll just end up disappointed and giving away the little rare pets you have.

Pay them, of course. ^^; It's not fair for people to put work into something they're very possibly not going to get paid for.

Sheesh, I feel like I'm being chewed out there Clowesia. ^^; Clearly, I ought to have worded that differently. ^^; My intention isn't to be cheap or rip others off. ^^; Someone has offered to provide me with more pets for my contest and I'm still compiling what I'm offering and haven't even begun organizing them into prize categories for 1st, 2nd, and so on. ^^;

Also, baiting and switching is now officially against the rules anyway. ^^; I read the rules before posting. ^^;
