Voodoo Child

She doesn't mind being called 'Voodoo' or 'VD' though. And 'Miss Voodoo' is also appreciated.

An undying thirst for sinister horror and blood-curdling tales. Every book on the dusty shelf is worn, the pages torn, the corners bent and folded, the leatherbacks scathed beyond repair. Small viles of this and little corked bottles of that decorate the shelf - for what use they serve is anyone's guess. Charms, perhaps? To charm against what?
The little doll, the star of her sinister dreams and stories, the friend of her youth, sits in the corner on a small wooden chair with a permanent, twisted smile sewn into it's mouth. Unblinking eyes watch the world forevermore. That smile widens - just a fraction - a limb twitches.
A vintage oak desk, faded by age, sits in the corner. A small collection of items sit scattered piles. Small shiny buttons of every colour, every size glimmer in the dull light, and sharp needles wait to be used, some already threaded for use, others stuck in a plump grey pin-cushion. There's a counter with a dusty till and several clear glass jars full of grim - one label reads 'Eye of Newt'. Another, 'Fermented Spider Eyes'. The charred smell of burning essence is ever present.

Perhaps not everyone's ideal living room décor, but to the sinister Voodoo Child, this is home. From behind moth-eaten curtains the perverse deals and works are done. Needlework, criss-cross stitches, a new mouth, stuffing and wool, she puts the care into each and every doll. It's not playthings she makes. No. 'Plaything' is a derogatory term. ‘Friends’ is the correct term.

"The sharper the knife, the cleaner the cut... or so they say."

There is nothing to fear about when in the presence of this eerie girl. She's not the killer next door or an evil mastermind. Just a quiet Bean with creepy quirks and an unsettling smile. Maybe her best friends are a snake and a doll. So what? She doesn't care what you think of her. She's kind of a romanticist at heart and secretly hopes for the day when someone will take her hand and allow her to whisk them away into her world, and vice versa.

Whatever riddle-words she chooses to use to dance around the subject, Voodoo is kind of lonely. She only watches you from behind her curtain because she wants to be 'warm'. Voodoo makes no sense like that, but what fun is it if you do? Keep people guessing. Keep people smiling - they do that when you spout whimsical nonsense, don't they?
She talks to her doll-friends. She sings and they sing back. At night-time she removes them from their day-time spots and takes them to the back-room only to lovingly re-arrange them in the morning.
"They get bored of sitting in the same old place everyday." She tells you with a serious yet kindly smile, a twinkle in those pale, ghoulish eyes that seems oddly warm and very out of place. Even so it's hard to trust her.

She likes polite and sophisticated people. They're much more likeable, so she aspires to be one. Perhaps not Hannibal Lector, but to those who treat the meek or suchlike with disrespect... she will not stand for it. It hurts her. But no matter how badly she is hurt she is a firm believer that time will heal all wounds... no matter how often those wounds are re-opened.

"Someone once called me Miss Voodoo. They made me smile, even though there was nothing kind about what they were saying."

Voodoo appreciates the dark arts. She's a child of the supernatural and loves to work on creating charms and spells for the benefit of herself and others, hence the bizarre menagerie of ingredients she stocks in her little shop. Everything from bottles of essential oils to fresh Basil can be found for all needs. This bean obviously does not possess any true powers. It is her strong belief and healthy attitude of the art that keeps it alive and apart of her daily life, however she does not believe in using it to cause direct harm to others.
There’s far more to Voodoo beyond her peaceful practices and friend-making hobbies. Her domestic living place is the, would you know it, the basement. Creepily decorated with various trinkets, horror novels and spell books, and of course, cobwebs, one could probably guess that she doesn’t care much for the little things. A small TV, a bean-bag bed and a kitchenette is all she needs.

"...You know what? I think Halloween is my favourite holiday. Not because it's scary or because of the candy... no. Because people visit me and then... and then they realise that I smile... just like them. But then I hate Halloween too. When it's all over, they don't come back..."

In the evening she likes to lock up shop and settle in bed with her pet milk snake, Edwin, to either watch a good old fashioned slasher film from her collection or to read the next chapter of her current read. James Herbert, Stephen King... heck, even Thomas Harris is a fine read. Many of her books are worn from use but due to her attachment to each novel she refuses to buy replacement copies. Delicious shivers and small delighted giggles galore when the last page turns...

"C-clowns...? Oh... no. They're just a little bit too creepy."

...Alright, so there is one thing. Voodoo is terrified of clowns. She's watched enough horror movies and read enough novels to know they're just plain evil! What madman isn't afraid of them?
