Resin and Ash-
Against her will, she fell asleep and woke curled next to Ash. Looking to the sky, she noted the position of the sun that just barely shone through the clouds. They had slept too long. By the time the rest of the pack got here and they began to cross, darkness would blanket the sky.
Rousing Ash, she turned and faced the direction of the pack. She howled long and low, instructing them all to wake and make their way to the ice canyon. Again she howled, this time asking for haste. If they moved fast, they could all get over the ice bridge before full night came.
They had some time before the pack reached them, so Resin padded carefully across the bridge, Ash following once she had crossed. "We have some time. If we can hunt and find something, the pack won't worry as much while crossing."
Resin and Ash walked several paces from one another, but still side by side. Each scanned and scented for prey. After a time, Ash alerted her to a large lumbering shape in the distance. The pair crouched low and moved in to investigate. Both of their stomachs growled. Mammoth.
The mammoth had left the far north years ago. Their immense weight sometimes caused them to plummet through the ice. After a time, they became wise to that fact and had moved South. This lone mammoth was huge, but it was by far the biggest mammoth they had ever seen. Killing it would be tricky, but Resin was determined. "Clamp and Tear," she whispered to her brother.
'Clamp and Tear' was a kill strategy. Basically Resin would come in from one side and latch onto the beasts throat or face and Ash would fly in from behind and tear open the belly. The light wolf nodded and they were off.
Staying low, they both took their places. The mammoth, a bull, was distracted, it seemed. He was trumpeting, calling out to his herd, most likely. As she drew nearer, Resin noted that the bull had an injured leg. Not only was this a blessing for the wolves, but it would be a blessing for the bull. He would have led a painful life.
Once close enough, Resin scanned the opposite side of the bull, looking for Ash. He was in position. With a burst of speed, the dark female took off and, diving beneath the swaying tusks, latched onto the beasts lower jaw. The mammoth bellowed and began swinging it's head, but she held on.
Ash did his part, running in quickly, he began tearing at the belly. It was difficult to get through due to the mass amounts of thick fur, but he would eventually get there. Every bite counted.
Resin felt something wrap about her midsection. The mammoths long nose appendage had curled itself around her and he was trying to pull her away. Between bursts of pulling, Resin adjusted her bite, still latched on to the lower jaw. The flesh was tearing and her mouth was full of sweet, warm blood.
It was becoming difficult to breathe due to the squeezing, but she refused to let go. This mammoth would die so that her pack could live. Pain lanced through her and still she hung on.
The battle continued until the mammoths knees buckled and it fell to it's side. During the fall it had released the dark female. Resin inhaled sharply, filling her lungs with cool, crisp, life giving air, then dove towards the mammoths stomach, ripping into it next to her brother.
Soon the beasts struggles stopped and the life left it's eyes. "Tell them," Resin panted. Gladly Ash raised his muzzle and called out to the distant pack, the promise of a great meal in his song.
