I tried using shading for the first time, it kind of failed.

It's a good start. I would try drawing a ball. Use t,darker tones at the base of the ball and work your way up. (Don't use spray paint, regular pen will do) Then blend it all together using a size 50 brush. It's not the same as shading an animal, but it certainly helps.
