I know some people hate them but I actually find them to be a good way to get art without paying a bunch.

I love art trades when both parties are happy! I've only done, I think, one actual art trade and I really enjoyed getting artwork in return for mine! It was actually much more satisfying than receiving another method of payment, in my opinion.

If you ordered a commission from someone who hasn't been on CS or DA for over 2 months and the commission is even older than that, what should you do?

I suggest that if they haven't been on; maybe to wait a bit longer? Maybe check and see if they have another site they go on and contact them there? If not, dA will do absolutely nothing about it; however you might be able to get your C$/Pets back if you ask Tess and Nick and show them proof of everything?
Thats just what I think; sometimes when people do this to you; you are simply out of luck;
I'd had it happen to me plenty of times. Back when I got 1000 points on dA for adopts; I saved it up to commission someone. The commission is a year old, hasn't been done, they don't draw anymore. I asked them for the point back and they ignored me, so what can you do?

This is why you never finalize a payment before it's finished.
If an artist wants to complete the payment before it's even started, just don't and go somewhere else.
Doesn't matter how good they are, just don't.
My journal section on DA lately has been full of artists forgetting to do commission and having to have the people that ordered remind them. Don't take the chance and be smart.

Made a gryphon design - he's based on a Jacobin pigeon, which is a super cool bird. I'm pretty pleased considering how hard that 'mane' was.

It's for CS pets, I just checked their DA to see if they were active there and it said that they haven't been on in a couple of months. I don't want to rip them off if they are working on the commission, but I don't want to hold onto the pet forever either ;.;

As a customer you have the right to efficient and on-time work. 2 months is a long time to have no contact with an artist. I'd cancel it with a note saying that they've taken too long and you haven't heard back from them when trying to contact them. Add a note that if they have partially completed the work or wish to do the work when they're back to contact you to talk about payment.

This is sort of off-topic, however, I PM them. X3 I ordered a color in of a head-shot line art of my fursona and her mate kissing under the mistletoe last Christmas or January, I recently PM-ed them about it when I saw that they were on at some point last month, they read my PM, but didn't reply, or cancel my payment....so I don't know what to do. I don't want to get them made so that they won't do the art, I really wanted that art, but at the same time, I don't think they're ever going to do anything. I really have my heart set on getting that art of them kissing. X3
I don't know if I can report them or anything because they haven't accepted or declined my payment.

I love them! It's a nice way of getting art of my characters that I can afford...except not too many people want to do art trade with me. So it tends not to work out for me.
