In a graphic, the vertical line is represented by y. The horizontal line is represented by x. The diagonal line that passes by the junction point of those two is represented by k.
And they are all letters to design unknown numbers in Math.

Even so, the X and Y represents genetics, as in the X And Y Chromosomes, so k doesn't really make sense.

Well I'm no expert, but a good indicator is if you look closely at the Japanese titles of the game, there is a DNA symbol. Also, Junichi Masuda has mentioned that one of the main themes in X and Y is evolution, so that is another link.

P.S- I have to admit- When I first heard a new Pokémon game was coming out, I thought it was going to be named Alpha and Beta, and the sister game would be Delta. Pokémon Alpha doesn't seem a bad name to me.

EDIT: I've started writing that Pokemon fanfic. Here's what I have so far:

Eethie the Eevee sat down on the grass, watching the sun set in front of him. That was his favourite thing to do. At dusk, Eethie often pondered things. Things such as what he would become when he was older. Flareon, maybe? Or Vaporeon? Or maybe even Glaceon? So many choices... Seven, to be in fact. Or was it eight? Eethie was sometimes forgetful.

What do you think?
Also, "So many choices... Seven, to be in fact. Or was it eight?" is an allusion to Gen VI.

He also pondered about the legends of Duskawn, such as the Mirage of Bluescale Coast. Supposedly, a figure could be seen in the sea to the east of this land, Duskawn. Eethie had always wanted to go on an adventure, and had a fascination with lore.

I've just re-watched some Johto journeys, and I have to say that the newer series just doesn't compare ;_;. I loved the pokemon anime right up until the end of Sinnoh, but I just can't get into black and white, it's no where near as good
it really brings a tear to my eye...

I don't agree with what you say, but I defend your right to say it. I mean, now one of the main characters has a Dragonite. That means Dragonite has more screen time. That is enough to make me happy and make me go bake some Dragonite cookies.
