Maximum Ride Roleplay-Thread 2 (NOT ACCEPTING)

Dirk took a moment to scrutinize Ren's face, not really paying attention to what he said. Usually he would be a little more talkative and he would sound upbeat and happy, but ever since Jinx ran off with Hiro he'd been different. He didn't want to make anything awkward by asking stupid questions or something but if he wasn't going to come out with it then Dirk would have to ask about it, right? Ren wasn't that much older than himself, probably about a year, so it shouldn't be too hard. He scooted closer to the trunk of the tree, nudging Ren with the tip of his shoe to get his attention, then patting the empty space beside him in the universal sign language for 'sit'.

I nearly fell back when she hugged me. I was surprised at how happy she was to see me. "What are you doing here?" I ask looking down at the garbage in the large bin. I made a disgusted face and shook my head. "This simply won't do." I turn and reach into the bag Michael had given me forever ago. Since only Varen and I had been around to eat it there was still a good bit left. I tossed her a handful of granola bars and a bottle of water.

Ren felt the shoe prod his chest, and tilted his head up to look at Dirk. He obediently placed his hands against the branch, hauling himself with ease up onto it. Ren sat down silently, feeling a bit awkward, so he hugged his waist for comfort. The black haired teen gave a gentle sigh, his green eyes trained on the ground.

The limb bobbed a bit due to the extra weight suddenly being imposed onto it, but quickly evened out. Dirk slung a lazy arm around Ren's shoulders, inadvertently bringing him closer. "Okay bro, spill it. What's up with you?" he asked softly, leaning his head against the taller's shoulder. He didn't like it when anyone felt bad, and he'd do pretty much anything to get Ren back to normal.

Ren swallowed hard, his fingers curling around the fabric of his shirt. He thought hard about what to say, taking a few seconds to decide. "Nothing of our concern." He murmured, the arm around his shoulders feeling like lead. But Dirk's head resting against him brought a bit more sense back, one thing he could focus on while talking.

Dirk sighed, pulling away from Ren and adjusting his position until he had one leg on either side of the branch, directly facing the older guy. He didn't want to bring this up just to get a little information, but to be quite frank, he was bored and this was at the very least mildly intriguing. "Ren, if it concerns you it concerns me. Ya know how much you, uh...mean to me. If there's something wrong I wanna help as much as I can. Even if I can't help you know I'm gonna try."

Ren looked over at Dirk, his green eyes tracing the other boys frame. The other's blue eyes strangely looked nice against his red hair. His jaw tightened, then relaxed after a moment. "You shouldn't be bothered by my girly mood swings. I thought you and the others learned to tune me out already."

"I learned to, I just choose not to. Besides, your mood swings are interesting," he said flippantly, a small smirk crossing his features. "But stop try'na change the subject. You're not leavin' this tree until I know exactly why you've been actin' so...I dunno, weird lately." The sliver of a smile left as quickly as it had arrived, replaced by a more serious expression. He internally winced at the drawl added to his words, though he thought of it more as an unorthodox lisp. It always made anything he said sound way less serious or practical than he wanted.

Dirk's way of talking made a small, amused smile tug at the corners of his lips, lighting up his featured a tad bit. That silly teen could usually beat a smile or two out of Ren for no apparent reason. He shifted his weight, making the branch sway gently. His leg was brought up to his chest, the other one hanging lazily. "I'm just stressed. Aren't all leaders?"
